Hey guys,
I got what I thought was going to be the Red Arrows Hawk from Ebay today. It came out of the box in a T-45-ish paint scheme. I like it, but it threw me off! Construction is excellent. Everything fits very well. The paint and covering are excellent as well. The fuse formers are rock solid. I want to put a MW-44 in it, but I don't have a place to fly it locally. I have a 500 ft paved strip, but our flying area is adjacent to a large park and we have a very small box to fly in. Guess I'll have to go with a .45-sized DF. I paid $170 for it, and it's worth it. I got it from Grace in NYC. I'm pretty happy.

HI Will,
It sure looks like you Gae a Hawk in T-45 clothes. It still looks good. In fact it looks just like my Red Arrows Hawk except for the colors. The interior plywood is the same as mine, so let's assume it's the same kit.
Hopefully, yours is much better than mine in several areas. My rear bulkheads were very poorly glued in The glue was more like a hot gun adhesive that never got hard. I had to glue them in myself, as the all came loose.
When you start to cut the canopy our of the piece it was vacuum formed from. go slow. To begin with only cut away the ends so you can fit it over the curve of the fuselage. IF YOU CUT IT to the line that looks like it will be fie finished size, it may end up too small. I almost did that. The sides had to be left about 1/8 inch longer than the imprint in the plastic, and the front and rear more than that. If I had cut to the impression in the plastic, it would have ended up so short it would not have been able to lay over the fuselage recesses on both ends.
You may find other areas that need some attention once you get into it. Mine started out as an ARF, but has become a project. It's till easier than starting from scratch.
Good luck.
Joe

Will I just won the same aircraft on E-bay a few minutes after I read your post. I hope it has the same paint job, it's a nice change. I'm glad to hear the quality is good. Hows the instructions? Doug

Joe,
Thanks for the heads up. I'll go slow with the canopy. Of all aspects of model building, canopies are what I hate the most...by far. I wish mine was already done! I'm going over the model with a fine toothed comb. I still may add some glue around the formers. What did you use to secure yours?
Doug,
Mine is clearly a knock off...just simply looking at the paint job. It has a wood wing. I've heard some had foam wings. That's the part that concerns me...no way to go in and make sure all the parts are bonded well. Just on that alone, I am more tempted to put $300 worth of ducted fan stuff in it rather than $2500 worth of turbine in it. I'm sure it'll be fine, but I don't know if I'm ready to take that leap of faith.
By the way, the instructions suck. They weren't even in the airplane box. They were in the shipping carton around the actual box. Go to the AMD site and download the manual there. That's what I did.

Xairflyer,
I know what you mean about it being a ducted fan! I guess once those guys are addicted to the sound and smell of Jet A, there's no turning back! I get paid to burn it at work so I get my fix there. Just by looking, I think the .91/Dynamax will fit. It will be a heavy plane, but as we've seen people have flown some heavy versions of this. I'm always big on keeping it light. A K&B 7.5 CC and a Macs pipe is supposed to put out around 7 lbs of thrust. That's what I've heard anyway. If the plane is kept at around 10 lbs, which may or may not be possible, It should go very well. I think the .91 version will weigh 2 lbs more. High wing loading, but will fly no problem in my estimation. I'm guessing a .65 or .77 would be ideal. I'm no expert.

Hi again,
My version is the built up wing. As for the bonding, I was very suspect. I squirted liberal amounts of thin CA every where I could reach. HINT. Be sure your hinges are not stuck into the holes before you do this. In fact, that woudl be a good place to put some CA to be sure of getting it in the outer structure. It can't hurt anything and it sure won't add much weight.
For power, I 'm going with the DynaMAx fan and OS .77 VRDF. I had this package in an old JJH F-86 and it flew great. I don't know how the weight or area will compare, but I think with the flaps, this should be OK.
BTW, I plann to make up a new tailpipe. What I was provided with was stiff (not a problem) and very heavy. It weighs six ounces by itself. I know I can cut that in half. There is no structural issues with a light exhaust duct, other than it holds together and is fuel proof to keep the aft fuselage from getting soaked.
Good luck.

love to find out some reports on what it is like with a OS91/Dynamax
Do you guys not know this is a ducted fan model, you keep sticking turbines in it !! just joking and very frustrated not being able to afford a turbine at present!!

Make sure you add the fences on the wing! With those it is basically un-tipstallable. Mine flies off grass with cutouts in the rear fuse side to allow TRIPLE the stock throw values and when I rotate off grass I've got full up-stab. No tipsall problems at all, it likes to drop the left wing a bit as it comes off but it is easily corrected with aileron and it flies away.
I have some packing under the fan ears to center my fan a bit, I use the JMP pipe system. You want the header they sell for the F-18 which has a 6 degree angle machined on the face.

My model does not have the wing fences. I can make a set pretty easily. Do they line up with the line between the flaps and ailerons? How far back do they extend on top and bottom... I'm actually a little surprised they are also on the bottom of the wing.
Thanks,
Joe

Someone posted a drawing in one of these AMD Hawk threads last year - I either used those patterns or drew some the same shape by eye, I forget which. I'll take some pics in the next day or two. And yes, I believe the aileron / flap break was exactly where I put em.
The plane is in a place I can't get to this time of night
. The pic above is pre-elevator mod, I'll get a pic of that too.

I just bought one of the tamjets f16 and dont think I will finish my jhh hawk, if anyone wants it send me a pm. I am in southern california. the jet is a real jet hanger hobbies hawk with the manual, flight cd, retracts fan unit with os motor, pipe everything brand new and all the hardware. there is absoultly no hanger rash or flaws on the plane. if you could pick it up I will sell it for a very very reasonable price but dont think I want to take on shipping.

Hi Chris True,
what pipe do you have in your .91/Dynamax? Looks like yours is shorter than the usual.
The one I have (on a MB339) is quite long and I have to put more weight on the nose to compensate and therefore the total weight increase also.
Thanks.

Hi dbateman,
I contacted you a year ago about a MB339, maybe you remember. I just got a Hawk from ebay as well and will start building next week.
I'm putting either a .77/Dynamax or a .91/Dynamax (the one I have in the 339, because in the 339 I will put netx month my first turbine

)Where do you fly?

I also have a .91/Dynamax so if possible I will built so that can use both and will see what's best.

That is the Jet MOdel Products twin outlet pipe, the one for the F-18 I believe. Originally I had the standard JMP single outlet pipe but it is in a corn field in Pa
either works fine, they both weigh about the same.

Scapjet, I have been flying theA-4 at Bridgeport. It is just this side of the Commodor Barry Bridge on Rt. 322. It's an old out of use airport a fairly isolated, but i'm sure it won't be long before housing is developed in the area. About 10 minutes from Phila. Chris, I know all about PA's cornfields. On the first flight of a Mirage KFIR I lost the engine hatch out over the corn in August and it was a camo paint scheme, forget it. Made new one from balsa sheet and fiberglass. The funny thing is my buddy lost a muffler at the same spot and I bet him he would never find it. I lost that bet but he let me slide. Doug

I have a A4 Skyhawk JHH, weight is 12.5 lbs with a .77/Dynamax and it flies great, so the same .77/Dynamax on a 10 lbs Hawk should be perfect.
I also have a .91/Dynamax so if possible I will built so that can use both and will see what's best.

I also have one of the eBay Hawks and will probably install a Dynamax/OS.77 setup with the .91 carb/backplate.

For those who happen to own a OS.77 and a OS.91, install the backplate and carb from the OS .91 on the OS.77. I bought a stand way off sport scale F-15 from grbaker 6 or 7 years ago that had this combo in it. For kicks one weekend I went through the trouble of pulling the fan unit and swapping the backplate/carbs to see what the differences were. It's like night and day, the OS .91 backplate/carb really wakes up the OS.77.
I also have one of the eBay Hawks and will probably install a Dynamax/OS.77 setup with the .91 carb/backplate.
