I say cut the poor guy some slack, He may be 40 and live with his mother but at least he is working on something halfway cool. Misguided or not I hope he has success and does not end up killing himself in the process.
If you have ever seen the the Hiller pocket chopper or flying platform they were very basic but they worked.

How the heck is he supposed to be able to start 8 Olympii reliably? As Eddie can tell you from the DC-10 experience, there was no way to hear propane light-off on the second Peggy. He had to look at temp on the EDT to know it was lit. Now you could do that seven times on this turd, but that's gonna be a MAJOR pain and a time consuming process. But I asked the dude this on eBay. He said this was only a pre-production prototype and the real McCoy would have "electric start" (I assume he meant full auto-start). I still say that there is no way that will work cause a large percentage of the time you are gonna get at least one failed start out of eight. Sure, it won't happen all of the time, but it will happen enough of the time to make this impractical. But that too is OK, cause it would no doubt save this fool's life!! [

Seams to me there is a thrust/body C/G issue. I believe thrust should be centered vertically down from shoulders as the case with the well know flying rocket pack. Looks like most of the thrust is centered behind him.

It is much worse then a scam. No con man in his right mind would spend that much cash on a con. I think he actually believes this will work. Problem is, he has rocket scientists telling him it won't work and still won't listen. Sounds firmiliar....

Well, don´t know if the jet pack works, but certainly you can fly for a while with two turbines attached to the ankles and a batman suit...
I certainly admire Matias Duran (a Spanish r/c modeler) nerves!

Checked out his website. Hmmm, interesting look in his eyes....looks like all is not there...LOL but of course i'd be the first to apologize if all goes great in due time. Geniuses have that knack and sometimes, that [&o][&o][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif] LOOK!

i respect the guy for trying and hope he does it, but i must thro in a couple of things here.. 1- plz don't bring it to my club field, the old guys will have a fit and turn u in to the ama. 2- should he check with the jpo first? and 3- the problem of fuel consumption is easy, just like in the movie (the rocketeer) - elephant oil ! = much less fuel is needed, the only thing hard about that is getting them into the masher..

They are indeed AMT-USA AT-450's. They are auto-start (don't equate "air start" with "manual start"). I can't speak for the other models, but I checked my logbooks and I've had 71 consecutive perfect starts from my air start 450's since the last engine maintenance (spring '05). The air start is cumbersome, but very reliable. Looks like he's got his control panel set up to start the engines in four pairs. Apparently, he's spent at least part of the two years getting a patent.
After further study of the photos, I see some potential serious problems, but if he'll tether it for the first test flights, he may be able to make it work. Gotta' give him credit for the effort, but the "buy the naming rights for $1M" part definitely gives the whole project a "snake-oil" feel.
And remember, 80% right can still leave you 20% dead ;o)
He claims he'll be ready to fly it this weekend...Hope he posts some videos.

hey wocket, would he be able to get both sides putting out the same amount of thrust? or close enough to keep it staight anyway, ya think?
#47
equalizing the thrust could be done by the use of an appropriate gyro set up .. Futaba actually has a dual input, dual output, 2 ch ( single axis dampening ) gyro that would work perfectly ... there are also CCPM mixing boards used on 4 point CCPM controlled helis that could be used to controll alter thrust output of opositely placed motors for some sort of stability ... i think the fore/aft stability of this thing is the bigest problem here ....

Even with being a really big risk taker that I am racing streetluge and the riding the Jet Luge, I am scared for this guy.... Obviously you guys would look at the fly-ability of this craft..... and maybe, just maybe he has some tricks up his sleve (or in that backpack)Maybe he sacraficed a Segway into his craft . As an engineers I would have gone through a wash of the project with many critics trying to shoot holes in it.. (as I did on RCU), especially if test #1 was to be manned. I have some obvious concerns of safety. things that i spent some time in thought and designed for them. Here are the things I see right off... prototype or not.. flys or not.
1. FOD Protection???????????? For the engines.... and what if one engine frags???? will that cover-all suit save him?
2. Fire Detection, suppresion, and protection? Again... the suit.
3. Landing force....... with or with out a chute.... Just try to jump off a couple of steps with a 100+ lb back pack... anything other than a perfect landing with this package on his shoulders will surely crush his spine or legs.... I see no dampining or shock break. and I would hate to see him try to tuck and roll
I have more. but for now.. I will just pray for him, and wish him the best.

PS.. Anyone in the St Augustine FL area? I will be there 15 to 21 January... perhaps with the Jet Luge in tow..

Did anyone notice the opening bidder's name (joe3112d) ? I wonder if it's THAT Joe and if it will be more reliable?
$10,000 - would that buy a good funeral in the U.S.? Maybe that's the idea, a DIY funeral fund if it all goes pear shaped! The glide rate if it dead sticks [X(] - John.
