RC Jet Top Speed????

Joe,
Your photos are great, thanks for sharing them. I am only a guest occasionally at the field you were at - I'm there sometimes a four or five times a year max when I'm in town for business and fly there with my jets less often than that. But you have a great field and a great group of guys to fly with if you ever get the bug, the Apollo field is an awesome place. Flying an RC jet can be just as much fun if not more than full size sometimes because there are not the career implications and court house lawyer mental maneuvering games required to pull the gear up and have some fun with an RC jet. It's liberating. You'd fit in quite well among the jet crowd I'm sure, you should consider getting a starter RC airplane and having some fun with the boys at Apollo field.

Eddie,
Thanks for the reply and info. That's a nice looking plane you have...appears similar to the one I primarily shot in flight in my first photo attempt.
I'm sure I would enjoy flying the RC versions, as I said I built and flew a small glider many years ago and while slow, I found the ability to fly it silently for as long as I wanted due to the endlessly prevailing winds along the shore, both relaxing and satisfying.
Take care,
Joe

A10,
Great video...I came across one or two similar in my initial hunt for info...including one that appeared to be "slingshot" launched with no gear, similar to some of the delta configs in your video.
The plane I watched yesterday didn't have the exhaust note of any of those, rather it sounded exactly like the last plane in your video, much more the note I think of when I think "jet".
Which are the turbines and which are the ducted fans, I assume the different sound denotes which is which?
Thanks again,
Joe

As far as I have been able to determine after a lot of research, the US is the only country in the world with a speed limit for turbine jets.

I seem to recall that they had some sort of speed limit for turbines up there (but higher than our paltry limit).

Hi Joe,
Yes I know Jeff. He is a rep for Skymaster USA and a very nice guy. Always willing to help or answer any question you may have. I will tell him about your photos when I see him next Sunday. You can also contact him here by PM-ing him. He goes by the name Skymaster-USA

No speed limit in the UK yet
one of our club members went 247mph through the speed gun
with a BVM Kingcat,Pegasus HP Turbine
This isn`t jet related but my mate converted one of these to rocket assisted
and it did 203mph 1/10 scale ME163 electric,

Tor,
I believe this pilot crashed his delta during Pampa 2008 Jet Meeting. He hit the deck at full speed, flat on the belly, and totally exploded into thousands of pieces. The turbine was found at least 200 meters away. The crash mark on the grass field was literally less than a meter away from the "do not pass" chalk line.
Nicolas.

Tor,
I used to have this standard reply ready for these good old e-mails (now sadly intercepted by modern software...) :
<<
My name is King Kong, son of the elder Tarzan and Jane, nephew of Zorro and successor of Bambi.
My jungle was invaded by extra-terrestrials and I had to hide my coconut crop under banana leaves.
I am addressing to you because I understand you are a complete idiot who thinks you make a chance to make me a victim with your absolutely ridiculous story. My coconuts must be transported to a safe place, so who could I better address to, than to you ? Please let me know how you can remit me enough money to rent a vessel for a few months. You can have a few of my coconuts in return. Please keep this information confidential because my coconuts are very much in demand by ET's and sometimes they read my e-mails too from their flying saucers orbiting in our solar system at the moment.

(Sorry, it's off topic, but simply couldn't resist...) LOL

I'm a new poster with what I think is a simple question. What is the top speed of RC jet's like I see flying at the local RC fields here in Southern California? I looked online and it appeared that the FAI states a record set in 1987 at under 200 mph.
I was nearby today and saw a plane (unsure of the scale) that was clearly a jet and appeared to be travelling faster than 200 mph. In searching the web it appeared that their are limits imposed by the AMA? or perhaps even federal air traffic control regulations regarding this?
The field I was observing was adjacent to Van Nuys Airport, the busiest general aviation airport in the nation.
Can anyone shed some light on this topic for a total newbie to RC aviation like me? I am a licensed Private Pilot but know almost nothing about the RC world.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

Turbine powered jets are still slower than what is being flown in dynamic soaring. DS sailplanes are hitting 370 MPH and they don't require a waiver to fly!

Did your research include Canada ?

Hi Gordon,
Wayne is our Jet Committee chairman for MAAC up here. There was a suggested number brought up a few years ago, but nothing was ever put in place. As such, we just want people to fly safe up here, but there is no speed limit. Sadly for the US guys, coming up here still requires following the AMA guidelines just as us Canadian guys have to follow AMA guidelines in the US, the rules state that the more strict rules apply in either country.

Thanks for the info Jeremy. I just recalled the discussions on e.g. the rccanada website, but was unsure what happened after that.
Sounds like you guys actually got it right in th eend, unlike the AMA.
P.S. I guess I should have looked at the location shown in Wayne's profile, before asking about Canada !!

WRONG- I believe erbroens and his buds in Brazil have proven that our turbine jets can go over 400mph without much modifying.

Joe, in this neighborhood there will always be those who just can't seem to have fun with a discussion and simple questions. You don't have to defend yourself at all and you didn't deserve the wise ass remarks. However, be prepared to get the same thing once in a while from the same neighborhood and let it roll off your back. As you can see, there are those who will have a decent discussion about your topic. Good pics by the way. I have to rely on the electronic cameras and hope they produce a good photo! Have fun, and go visit your local fields!
