Default Air Filter

Motor Oil or 2-stroke motor oil for air filter? Which one of them can be used instead of a air filter oil.

Basically anything that will help collect dust. Try to find some air filter oil if you can though. I is designed to collect dust and small particles but yet not harm your engine if it gets in there (and it will).

Couple of weeks back I have seen a guy using 2 stroke motor oil on his air filter for his jammin. He told me it is better and makes the foam sticky as well.

What are your views?

Filter oil is wildly overpriced.

Mugen 100ml = $12
Duratrax 3oz = $5
Motorsaver = 1oz $3.89

Why support price gouging?

Air filter oil is sticker and does not restrict the airflow like other oils. Why not be safe and use the proper oil? You can all ways use motorcycle air filter oil that is made for foam filters. It’s your engine so it is all up to you but I know the only stuff I will use on mine. Good Luck.

I agree but keep in mind how much an engine cost! A small bottle last me about 5 gallons The proper motorcycle air filter oil is way cheaper and works just as well.

Motorcycle air filter oil...
1 quart=$12...It is designed for foam filter elements, and should last the rest of my life, and a good portion of the afterlife. How is that for not supporting price gouging?
Like the old saying..."an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
Maybe could save a little bit of $ by not running with a filter at all...better performance too[&:]

You better read the label on K&N filter oil bottles as it is made for glaze filter not foam!!!!!!!!!!! Been a motorcycle mechanic and machinist for over 30 years.
Any body in this hobby supports price gauging as if you have any idea how much mark up is on parts, vehicles and so on you would understand.

I've talked to a R/C hobbyshop owner. Depending on the product, some of the markups are minimal and some are a bit fat. Filter oil? The local motorcycle shop will sell you 5 times the quantity of oil for 1/2 the price.

The mark up on RTR or kits is not a whole lot but that is to get you in the hobby but replacement parts have a fair mark up. Case in point you can buy a Savage X SS kit for around $420 and if you buy the factory replacement engine it is all most half that much! Bad thing is the hobby shops are the ones that get screwed, as it is the manufacture and suppliers that make the real money! I would be willing to bet a engine that sells for $200 cost the manufacture at the most $50 make.

I realize the hobby shops are not the ones setting unreasonable prices. I just burns me to see the prices for these tiny bottles of filter oil. I just went down to the local motorcycle shop and picked up a bottle of Uni Filter Oil for foam filters. I got 16oz for $4.95. If it's good enough for Honda, Yamaha and others, it's good enough for me.

I think we can all say that the prices are way to high. There is a lot of price gauging in this hobby but most of the people dont even know that they are getting jipped so what they dont know doesnt hurt them right.

I am also a metal fabricator and can tell you that some of those machined parts are very overpriced. But it takes money to make better quality parts remember. A company that has up to date machines can make better quality parts, faster and cheaper then a out of date machine can. And the machines that hey have just dont cost a thousand dollars. I use to work around a machine that all it did was cut metal (better known to fabricator's as a shear) that cost 5 million dollars and that wasnt the most expensive machine by any means in the building. I agree that some of the parts are overrpirced but the company's has to grow and prosper, if they dont then wont have replacment parts for our vehicles. So you see yes they do mark up the prices but they have to make a living and they also have to buy machines that 98% on this site couldnt buy even if we sold out house to try and get it.

Hi,

There are at least 15 kinds of oil products I could think of and they all have the same thing, they attract dust. But can you just soak them as a filter oil? Why not just use silicone shock oil as filter oil then? Saving 5 bucks and risk the life of your engine is a bad move.

Ball bearing oil can also be used as bushing oil and vise versa but just don't act as good. Different oils have different applications. Don't mix them up.

Regards

Joaquim
