Excelleron 90
#552
Vince,
I have been using Powermaster 15% nitro, syn-castor blend. I fly about 1200' above sea level. if that helps. Being old school I like some castor in my fuel. Last time I flew there was about a 15 mph wind blowing and my down winds were on just idle!

Hi,
I'm looking for a plane to participate in a local pattern contest this September. I think that Excelleron 90 would be a very good choice. However I would like to use the plane for freestyle/3D flying. Han anyone performed basic 3D with Excelleron such as harriers, hover waterfalls etc? I downloaded the manual and there is a small paragraph regarding 3D set up so I would guess 3D with this plane is possible . Also I noticed that elevators and rudder are rather large for a pattern plane and also that it has full span ailerons, not very wide though.
The plane would be a last minute choice due to the lack of EF YAK 54 and Showtime 4D in Europe. From those planes you could easily understand where I'm coming from. I would like an "all around" ship that could fly both styles by flicking the switches.
Engine choices would either be an OS-120 Surpass III Pump or YS-110 FZ.
So what do you think? Is this the right plane for intentions?
.
Rgrds,
Nick

I'd strongly suggest the YS110. I don't think you'll be happy with the OS 120.
Although I have my Excelleron set-up for pattern on low rates - My high rates do 3-D pretty good. I don 't have full deflections nor any controls mixed (like elevator/aileron for harriers-) and with these milder 3-D rate throws it does a pretty good job.
As soon as I finfish my new 2-Meter pattern plane I plan on changing my linkages on the Excelleron to get full deflections and ring it out. it should be fun.
I think you'll enjoy this plane

Well, I just ordered the Excelleron 90. It should be here in a couple of weeks. I have a new Evolution 100 to put in this, am going to use high-torque coreless servo's for all controls and high-torque coreless micro servo for the throttle. I saw someone put one (micro servo) in the engine compartment for the throttle and that looked very neat and tidy so that's probably what I am going to do.
Questions.
1. Does anyone know who makes a tuned muffler for the Evolution 100 engine?
2. One battery or two? 4.8 or 6 volt? MAH capacity?
3. What about linkage to the rudder and elevator? Ailerons get 4-40 I presume?
Thanks in advance.

DS,
A Macs *1190* would work fine. I would then use a Karl Mueller Header, and a Perry vp 30 pump. I am using a 4.8v ni-mh 1100mah and it works great. The stock hardware is fine. Rudder and elevator are pull-pull, and hardware comes with the plane. Some of us posted pics of changes we made ealier in this thread. I think I remember Tommy S. used all stock hardware on his and he said it worked great. You are gonna like this plane![sm=thumbup.gif]

Hi y’all, well I’m the guy that bought aerobob’s Excelleron w/ST 2300, header and canister muffler. I’ve read all the write-ups posted here and learned much, but still have a lot to learn. The uniflow tank is new to me. I have read a lot of stuff about them and I “think†I understand how it’s suppose to work, but I’m having fuel feed problems at certain mid-range RPMs. Idle is good and top end is good, good transition from idle to WOT, but if I stop at half throttle for more than a few seconds the engine sputters and stutters until I either go back to idle or WOT.
I have one flight on this bird. It trimmed out with just a few clicks on down and flies very nice. Because of the erratic mid throttle I decided to land. I would rather be right and lucky than just be lucky.
Any suggestions!

Howdy, Bob Pet.... glad you got it setup. Meant to tell you (and EVERYONE else, sorry) that the Uniflow should NOT be used on these large-venturi carbs and big displacements. After I tested that setup on the Dream and the Excelleron, consulted with someone "in the know", we concluded to abandon the Uniflow on larger motors.
Just run a normally-vented tank, Bob, and she'll do fine.
The symptoms you describe are exactly why we decided to discontinue it.
I'm sorry I didn't get back here and tell everyone of our test results.

Bob,
I agree. I was gonna try to come out last Sun. to fly with you but weenied out due to heat. My Excelleron is stomping its feet ready to fly but pilot won't give clearance due to wx. Still the craziest wx year I have ever seen as far as not being able to fly! BTW are there any pattern meets comming up within reach of us? Guess I like computer flying too.

For those of you who have built this plane the instructions on page 12 dont say to glue down the plywood wing screw doubler. I assume it has to be glued down can anyone help?

Hi all, I got the Explorer version of this plane with retracts. I plan to assemble it this winter but didn't get any instructions. Is there a place I can get them?
Thanks, MikeB

I'll look this weekend to see if I can locate mine. They're boxed up in storage.
Maybe someone who helped in a previous thread has them scanned on their computer.
I'll check back on Monday to see if you need more help.

Flew my Excelleron in competition for the first time today. Not bad at all. The plane that is. Jury is out on the pilot.
Its maiden flight was yesterday. I got two rough trim flights in. My YS 91 FZ had reasonably good power with an APC 15 X 8 and running Magnum #1. With VERY limited trimmimg I got no coupling in knife and a very slight pull to the belly on downlines. I still have some thrust line/ rudder trim stuff to work on.
I showed up this morning planning on flying in Sportsman against five or so others that had promised to come out. No one else did. SO - I said what the hell, and entered Intermediate. Phew! Brand new plane, not even fully trimmed - never before flown sequence, third flight ever on the Excelleron. Lets just say the plane did WAY better than I was capable of.
From what my somewhat inexperienced pattern skills can tell, its quite the plane, considering the whole thing didn't even cost twice as much as a Hyde mount.
IMHO, if you want to do pattern on a tight budget or just get your feet wet - you gotta check it out, especially if you can catch one of the $199 sales. My LHS had it for $198. I'm getting real curious if I can get another at that price.
As far as the competition is going, If I could just stop doing my damn sportsman manuveurs in Intermediate class I'd be fine! I kept starting the damn cuban 8 as a reverse because of all that Sportsman muscle memory! Did the same thing with some of the rolls.
AND, this is the first time I've competed in a somewhat strong crosswind. Lets just say I learned tons about pattern flying today.
A little bit more umph on the uplines would have been nice. With the hard crosswind, a low airspeed on uplines was killer. If I'm comfortable tommorow, I'm stepping up to Magnum #2.
Only complaint - it seems as there is a warp in either the stab or elevator halves. I aligned the elevators at neutral by matching the counterbalances to the stab. This put the trailing edge of one of the elevators about 1/4 inch higher than the other.
I "saw" this issue when I used two CF pointers to equalize the throws, but just couldn't believe they were out that much at neutral because they didn't really look like they were warped.
One of the judges came up after my third round and had me sight down the wing at the elevators while watching them come up, and sure enough - one is higher than the other. Sure wish I had so much experience I could trim a plane without flying it.
Tomorrow I'll see how much it helps.

Im just putting this plane together and found one elevator half has its hinge slots about 1/4 inch below the centre. Maybe that is the problem Jasons. Ill just ca mine up and put three new slots to take the ca hinges.

Bingo!
Yep, one of the hinge lines was cut about 1/8 of an inch too high. Looks like ours were cut on the same jig?
I'm at 7 1/8" cg now, and it still seems nose heavy to me. It pulls very slightly to the canopy on knife and downlines, but it requires a fair amount of down elevator even on 45 degree uplines. Has anyone tried adjusting the downthrust on their excelleron?

Jason,
I put a washer under the motor mount on each side of the front bolts. This really transformed my plane. Also moved cg back to 7 3/8 or maybe a little more now that I put my rx battery just aft of the fuel tank. That and a few other things really made mine fly great!
