Kevin,
I moved mine forward about 3/4" to compensate for the rearward sweep of the
Bolly gear . Drilled some new holes and added blind nuts. Added some triangle stock
and fiberglass reinforcement to the inside , real easy to do.
I think Eddies is in the original position , works OK too.

My plane was the retract version and I modified it so there was no mounting block to begin with. The entire underside was sheeted with balsa. I cut it all out (from the firewall back to the former at the front of the wingsaddle area(I'd call it F3) and glued in a plywood bottom. I then drilled the new ply plate and installed blindnuts. As Tommy said I did not move the gear forward any as the wheel placement was falling more forward than the original retract wheel location and the plane landed soo well with the retracts that I was attempting to get the placement the same. I just got extremely tired of bending retract struts.

Thank you for the information. I like the sweep back look as well, so I think I will go with that on mine also.

Is it the FAI standard version you are using? Approximately, how many inches does it sweep back?

Kevin,
Yes , F3A std on mine. The F3A large will work also , just a little taller.
The total sweep is around 2" but I couldn't see any reason to move them that much ,
I was just trying to get the wheels positioned near the wing leading edge. An added
bonus with the Bolly gear is some shock absorbtion , helps you not bounce the landing ,
and yes , they look good too.

It has been a productive day!!!!
The ST2300 is installed, tanked, propped, and run in. HMOG. It will be truly unlimited, and that should be in caps. On the 10% PM fuel I broke it in on the std. muffler, with an APC 17 x 10N, and that was WAY under-propped. By the end of the first tank, it was singing, and I'm nowhere near leaned. The ST 2300 out of the box is just wonderful. Carburetor is perfect, and I'm running the Uniflow system, which seems to give it very consistent flow. High, low, in between. Oh, and the IDLE is just outstanding. I would fly it after this one tank, it's plenty good enough.

Pics of the ST in the nose attached. It really looks like it belongs there.
And no, I haven't checked the prop clearance, but it measures that there should be 5/8" clearance when the fuse is level with the stock wheels. Larger wheels may be all we'll need!!!!

Hi Bob,

That's great news and pic's! If it was flying season, I'd jump right to flying with the muffler. As it is winter, I'm going to work right away to the header/canister solution. I expect my Excelleron to arrive next week. I'm going to order my ST2300 now given your latest inputs.

Hi Bob,

The 17x10N was my favorite ST2300 prop. Jeff, that is what was on my Olympian the last time you flew it. If you get over 8300 rpms on it, it will provide unlimited vetical on 10.75 lb 2M bird. After trying the 18x8W on the Webra's, it may be a great prop for the ST2300 too.

Jimbo my man.....what the hey is up? I ordered one of these Excellerons..the are about 10 inches smaller in Lngth&WS but present like a full size airplane in the air, for 200 bucks why not. If I can find $350 lying around there may be a YS 110 in my future--otherwize a 2 stroke. Tell Olenka & your baby girl that we all said hi from Texas, I am sure you guys are really enjoying being back in S. Florida. Be sure to give a shout to Juan R, Ransom, and Kevin P. for me. Jeff B

Where did you get the Bolly carbon fiber landing gear and what was the part number? Second question, if I use a YS 110 will the stock motor mount work?

Aerobob, is that the stock motor mount that you mounted the 2300 on?

Called Maureen Dunphy at Precision Aero Composites and asked for Bolly F3A std
landing gear and wheel pants. She is also the secretary for NSRCA , nice lady.

Bobby,

I am running a YS 120 4 stroke using the original stock motor mounts and no problems. Seems pretty firm when you grab the spinner and try to move. Assemble the thing with JB Weld but not on the wood screws.

I painted the inside canopy with Testors plastic model spray paint and it came out real slick. I don't like clear canopies.
Mike what tape do you use to re-affix the canopy to the fuselage after painting it?

Regarding a source for long linkage takeoffs, I think I am going to give Dubro a call and tell them there would be a market for packs of long takeoffs only. Who knows.

MOre info...First, Mark - I do intend to use this in Masters in 2005. At least I'll find out if there is a size prejudice!!!

Now - IF you are considering the ST 2300.... here are some things you must know.
1. Reduce the flange widths front to back. Pics earlier.
2. Stock mount works just fine. Even at idle, there isn't too much movement, it definitely isn't too soft.
3. If you use the stock muffler, you will need a 3/16" minimum spacer between the exhaust port and the muffler flange to permit the muffler body to clear the fuse side.
4. 16" props will work if you have a paved, smooth surface but NOT MUCH clearance if using stock wheels. 17" will NOT work. Suggest using larger wheels, or getting longer gear.
5. Balance - as predicted, with the stock ST and it's muffler hanging up front, I had to move the battery to 12" in front of the rudder hinge line, and add 2.5oz at the middle of the stab on the fuse. This gives 7.25" CG, with empty tank.

I'll do some pics later, but it really looks like it's supposed to be in there, guys. I was sure surprised.

Yes!!!

But - it was less than $130. Runs on LOW (or no) nitro in this application. Don't need to use a tuned system, and can make use of the KS canister gathering dust right now. Won't use much fuel
And - no matter how hot it gets, I won't run out of steam on the tops.

I just hope the throttle never jams open.....

Bob,
I intend to build according to your posts and your site.
Eliminating the stock muffler and going with a header and pipe, under the wing, should eliminate the extra weight, am I right? If that doesn't work I'll put one of my 2700 mAh 5-cell packs in your stated location, that should do the trick.

I'll continue to watch your site, thanks for all you do, for all of us and the hobby.

My ST-2300 is on hold for me at my LHS.

Can I fit 8411-SA's in the wing?

Does anybody know the weight difference of the standard gear in comparison to the Bolly? This might help also.

You certainly will not NEED a tuned system, and that could get longer than the space you have. The canister mounted in the belly pan, centered on the CG, will remove the need for both the battery to be aft, and the lead under the stab. Mounting the battery at the CG will get it very close.

Another ST detail - the hardwood beams need just about 1 mm removed from each to be wide enough for the ST to slide on in. The header will eliminate the need for the muffler spacer, too.

Please remember that this is unflown with this combo, but my earlier flights (and many others) have validated that it is a very capable design.

Bob,

I never worry about this being an unflown combo, by the time I get most of my airplanes in the air, the combo hasn't been tried before either. I checked on the servo size, I found that the 8231's are the same size as my 8411 SA's.
The weight of the 2300 is actually less than the OS-120 w/pump that I was going to put in it.
I'm assuming that you have the tank in the stock position, is there room to move it to the CG?

Sorry for all of the questions, just pre-planning. In my mind I'm already flying this plane

As with most ARFs, it seems they always put a fuse former/bulkhead AT the CG, thereby making tank installation impractical, at best. I'm leaving it up front because I want to run muffler pressure, and the Uniflow tank system. With a pump, it adds more weight, and can get into a richening situation with the stock ST carb. There will be some trim changes, but not so much....probably could go with a 6 oz tank, if you wanted...or just fill the stock tank only partially. It ain't gonna take much fuel with this setup, I am quite sure.

I have 8231's in ailerons, fit just fine...same with fuse servos. The cutouts are "standard" and the JR servos fit no problem.

tph1 - You're a sadist[>:]....tell you what - you fly here, give me a cashiers' check for the whole kaboodle, and I'll GET the throttle "stuck" so you can LYAO

Jeff,
The canopy came from Precision Aero Composites , for a Hydeout. I originally got
it for my Widebody because the stock one was cracked but used it on the Excelleron
when I discovered its canopy was also damaged. It worked out real good as it allowed
me to move it about 2" forward of the stock position. It's a little larger and longer than
the stock one so I personally think it looks better and probably adds just a little side area
forward.
Bob, Ken,
With my tank in the stock position behind the firewall I don't notice any trim changes as
fuel is burned. It only uses about 1/3 tank flying the intermediate sequence so not much
difference.
