NEW QUEST

I added 12oz to the nose of mine with a ST 90 to get it to balance aroun 6.5 flew like a dog, took all the weight out, it balances around 7.5 to 8 inches back, flies a whole lot better

With a YS110 mine is flying with about 2.5oz in the nose with a 5 cell batt. and servo in the tank compartment. Are you guys sure you are balancing at the right point. Is 6.5in equal to 165mm? I flew today in a gusty wind, it flew great. She does like to float in a brisk wind on landing. How about airbrakes anyone have experience with them on this plane? If so, how high do you set them and how much elevator trim

OK.... I know I can balance it.... but has anyone put their bird on the scales??
to convert MM to INCH: multiply MM times .03937... Soooooo 165mm times .03937 equals 6.49605..... close enough to 6 1/2 inches. So, yes, young grasshopper, 165mm is equal to 6 1/2 inches (well, almost)

Just to let you know I turned 60 last month. My only point is that it sounds like a lot of weight to get this plane to balance. I am flying mine which does balance at 165 with much less. I am sorry if I ruffled your feathers. old wise one.

No ruffled feathers here.... just a frustrated old guy (55years old myself) I can't seem to figure out the weight thing. I will cut out the tank and move it back, and move the throttle servo and battery forward... but even if i loose all the lead... I am still ovrweight. (rats!)

It seems to me that you have two issues, balancing, and the total weight. If you remove the lead and weigh the airplane and it comes out above the recommended weight then so be it. It is what it is. Unless you are a highly competitive pattern flyer I would not worry about it. As far a moving the tank, as I said the tank fits right behind the second bulkhead without any cutting again see my pics. Finally I noticed when balancing mine that the mark has to be right on, if you are 1mm either way it will fall to the nose or the tail.

JPal,
I'm 55
I sure beats the alternative doesn't it!
I am sorry if I missed it if you mentioned it previous but what tank did you use?
The stock tank or aftermarket?
Thanks!

A friend of mine has a brand new quest still in the original packing and box, he has never opened it. He would like to sell it for a reasonable price. Anyone interested?

Eric or anyone,
Do you have a picture of the back of the firewall showing the position of the blindnuts relative to the slots for the tank compartment hatch when using a Hyde mount for a YS 1.10?
I have the mount location layed out but it looks a little high.
I wanted to double check before I drill any holes.
Thanks!

This is all that I have in my photo files. It shows the position of the hydemount and should help you see if yours is close.
This is the latest QUEST. (I will probably get another one when the new batch comes in so that I can take more current photos).
Regards,
Eric.

Mine weighs nearly 10 lbs on a fish scale - not the most accurate scale but within a few ounces. No dead weight added - heavier than I was hoping for. First flight today. Much faster than I expected. I wouldn't describe it as floaty or touchy. Executed one reasonably gentle deadstick landing on grass. Cracked the stock landing gear from side-to-side between the front bolt and the back two. Hmmm. Not very happy with how the OS120AX is running (just muffler pressure, aft tank position). Its not fully broken-in, but may need a pump. Mixture is unstable from tank-full to tank empty. I wouldn't describe the combination as "overpowered." Hope for better performance when I get it leaned out and maybe with a better prop combination (running 17X6).

Such a nice day took mine out of the packing and started it today outside on the table.. Right away the blue covering bubbled in the sun, looks like a typical ARF with some kind of glue dribbled here and there. Used some med & thin CA to glue where I could reach. This is sure faster than building, I kind of like it for a change.

I think one needs to keep the tail light due to many having to add weight to the front to meet the c/g requirement that was recomended by the designer of this bird to fly good.

I flew mine the other day after a small problem with a tree. Rudder servo in the rear and battery up front behind the firewall with no extra weight. I am not a 3D pilot but rather more like pattern. I am very impressed with its stability and it lands like a dream. I did not experience any of the bad characteristics previously described. I love this plane.

WAIT, CANCEL THAT, I am on the wrong thread. The plane I described was my new Show Time from Hanger 9. My quest is being rebuilt due to some problems I have had

Its apples and oranges, my Quest has a YS 110 with a 14X10 prop and the Show-Time has a Saito 100 with a 15X6. The show time is a lot slower and is a compromise pattern, 3D ship. If you are looking for more pattern characteristics I would stick with the quest. But, if you are a sport flyer I think the Show-Time is the way to go. The hardware is first rate and no need for all the modifications we made to the quest. Also if you do need parts they are readily available. You can even buy one wing half. It is a very strong plane and can take some abuse. It flys great right out of the box. I used everything they supplied except I added aluminum servo arms.
