Ken,
Don't be too hard on yourself, it happens to us all at one time or another. Last year
at a contest we saw a brand stinkin' new 2 meter pattern ship destroyed from not
putting the bands on between the two wing halves to secure them on the wing tube.
Made about a one minute flight then "POW" ----ouch----expensive mistake.

I peeled some of the weight of mine also but, with better results. It was very nose heavy with all the lead I had to add to get it to balance at the recomended cg. I must have been doing something wrong as it flew like a dog (also had the nipple in the carb come loose witch did not help) the first three flights. Brought it home and took a few ounces of and fixed the carb problem. Flew another 5 or 6 flights tonight and what a difference. Going to take another ounce off and I think I will be good.

Plane flies great now even with a ST90. Not ulimited vertical by any means but, still enough there for my purpose.

This plane is a keeper!

MLC, how much weight would you say you have on nose now?

Thanks

I honestly have lost track of how much is on there now. I wraped up strands of weigth in electrical tape to fit behind the motor so I could take them of pretty easy. I cannot see what is left. A quess would be 10oz.

One thing I did not do that I will probably add is a TrueTrun spinner, that would help with pulling more weight off as the spinner is out there in front of the motor.

I have a 2 3/4 GP on mine.

I also took another oz. of my mine. Flies great. Will have to go with the two thumbs up on this plane.

They told me a 2.5". I just ordered one. Will a 2.5 look ok, or is the 2.75 a better match?

I had a 2.5 on mine but, it was just a hair small. The 2.75 looks better in my opinion.

noahb, I now know why I thought the 2.5 spinner was a hair small. When I was putting it on I was not paying attention to the fact that the Dubro goes around the outside of the back plate. Knowing that now I am going to go back to the 2.5. Sorry to have been misleading on that.

Well, I have finished mine.
Here is my thoughts:
1. With Saito 100, I had to add 6.5 oz of lead weight to get it to bal. around 7" back. I have the elevator servo in the tail (more on that later). I mounted the throttle servo up on the firewall, mounted a 5 cell 6.5oz battery pack up front as well, used a tru-turn spinner and 15x6 apc prop with stock motor mount. I was not happy about adding the 6.5 oz of weight to the firewall, but I had to.

2. It would be nice if they gave you some extra wire for the pull-pull on rudder so that you could mount servo farther forward.

3. It would also be nice if they included a pushrod system that would be easy to install to allow the elevator servo to be mounted up in the fuse.

The plus on everything is that the flying weight dry is at 8.6 lbs. That's good. Everything went together great.

As you can see, I built mine light. Also, Eric made mention about using a isolation mount in my case for the added weight. It would have come out just right.

I have yet to fly it, can't wait.

Except for the bal. issued, I give this plane a big thumbs up.

They stated that the saito would bal. fine by moving the batt. around and servo placement. It might, except trying to run a pushrod back to the elevator without support in the fuse, is very difficult at best. This is where it would be nice if they maybe included some type of bellcrank to mount the servo up front. I may do this mod later as I think I could get the plane to a tad over 8lbs.

Ultra RC has been a great help.

I rec. this plane so far. I would not run a light engine. If I did not already have the saito 100, i would have gotten the YS 1.10 and it would have bal. perfect.

I have a question the hatch for the tank, the instructions say to glue the hatch in place is this right? What if you have to get to the tank would be kinda hard to do with the hatch glued in place

jetmech43, I just put a small scrap piece of balsa in the back and used a small screw. I probably have 75 flights on mine with no issues.

I would do a small amount of re-enforcing of the landing gear block. The blue strips on the wings and stab also need sealed/glued down as they have the leading edge stuck out in the wind and come off easily.

This is a great plane and I really enjoy flying it.

Mine came out so I replaced it with a little heavier ply and pinded it in place. Added a partial rib on both sides in the center of the tank area (helps hold the tank also) and pinded it from the bottom. No problems since then. If you did then same thing with what is there you should be fine. I fly off a grass field and it is kind of rought so I am sure that was part of the problem.

I did not use the stock hinges, I used the Radio South hinges.

I want to use JR digital servos in my new Quest. Does anyone have an idea of what may work best with this plane?

GC,
If you are set on JR's, I'd go with 9411's in the wing and 8411's for the elevator and rudder. Pick anything you want for the throttle.

In the original Quest there's not quite enough room for a full size servo, in thickness, and my Hitec 635's left a little bump in the top of the wing covering.

My .02, for what it's worth.

Got them both out at the field today. Put # 2 son on the buddy box after a 3 year lay-off. Within minutes he was doing KE's and reverse KE's. A bit of a strain on the buudy box finger but he had a blast.

Here are some side-by side pics etc...

Well, I have been flying mine for two weeks now. Love it. It flys great. It just needs ever so slight amount of down elevator when inverted. Knife edge is great. It also gets pretty wild. I am running a saito 100 15x6 apc, 30% magnum fuel and she pulls straight up. I had added 6 oz up front, but i am now at 3oz and this is bal. around 7.25-7.4 inches back. It flys great like this.

One of the best airplanes I have flown. I like this better then my Funtana 90.

No sweat GC,

Anything to help, this plane is a great flying bird. You could also use the DS8231, but the speed is only rated at .22, probably fast enough but I always like more speed. That's why I have the new Hitec 6965's in my new Excelleron 90. 111 oz. of torque and rated at .08 sec. at 6V. I have to say, these are the fastest servos I have ever used. The only thing is, I have no idea if they center as good as the JR 8411, time will tell.

Good luck,

Ken
