My proudest moment as a new builder.
I realize this is the way it SHOULD be, but it really intimidated me. I was able to get the nose ring and motor mount in dead on center. The motor is sitting flush on the mount without the motor screws tightened, and fits perfectly through the nose ring with zero bind on the nose ring. I just knew I would end up needing to tweek the engine into the nose ring just a little. As it is if the firewall was installed on the right angle I should have the right angle of thrust. [8D]
Also just a reminder, this was all fit up with a 1.40 Sport. I have been told by everyone that has handled a 1.60DZ that it is a drop in replacement for the 1.40s. Im still not suposed to be getting the 1.60 in for about 2 weeks. I could go ahead and fly it with my sport but I think Im going to be patient and wait on it...

OK, here we go. The epoxy needs to cure but the motor mount and nose ring assembly are ready to go and fit great.
Here are some decent pics from the yard this afternoon.
Heres what is left.
Install the header, muffler and throttle servo.
Install the fuel tank, switch, and receiver.
Set the indicence in the stabs and wings.
Oh yeah, and install the retaining screws to hold the stabs on. I will not be entrusting the incidence adjustment screws to hold the stabs on.
One point of interest I thought I would mention. The fuselage is VERY thin and VREY soft. This plane wont be able to take much hangar rash. The balsa for the wings and stabs and the fuselage will dent easily. Im going to have to become like my friend Glen Watson and only allow folks to carry out my plane with their rings on their fingers off...
If you look at the pic taken from below and to the right you can see some of the effects of Hurricane Rita... Thats just the small stuff

Fragile and valuable plane? Look into Adrian Wong's soft bag sets.

Just FYI guys - I got an email from Marcelo last week stating that they are now producing a carbon fiber verson of the fuse to stiffen it up (lighter too he says). Don't know if the ARF's will change over to cf, but I know they are making that option available in the kits.

Dear Mike
I have a 160 DZ in front of me and the crankcase is exactly 50 mm wide compared to my FZ 140 with only 47 mm crankcase. The drop- in can only take place if theres space enough between the beams in the Hyde mount....
Thanks for your great thread

Interesting,
I was goofing around last night and saw that Chief Aircraft was showing 1- 1.60 DZ in stock and they were asking $799[X(]. I called this morning to see if they actually had one. They did have it and to my surprise they offered to match the price I was going to pay for the backordered one, so needless to say the engine is coming and should be here tomorrow.
My impatient nature got the best of me and I forked out the extra $20 to get it here tomorrow.

I havent weighed it yet Todd. I know one thing, I weighed the wings and they are very light at 15.8 oz each... wow.
Im planning to go to Buddys and weigh it tomorrow or the next day after I get the new engine and the throttle servo installed.
I found out some info on the 1.60 from YS today. The 1.60DZ is the same length from the front hole on the engine mont to the spinner backplate so it should fit up the same, but its 6mm longer to the rear, its also 3mm taller than the 1.40s are.

Might want to give Earl a call before you start up that 1.60 Mike. He gave us some tips and told us to inject some oil into the carb and turn it over a couple times before the first start.

OK, I have the engine installed and the servo mounted but I havent started on the linkage yet.
I installed the exhaust header support and it fits just right.
Facts about the DZ.
It fits into the motor mount EXACTLY like a 1.40 sport. It hit in the exact same spot on the spinner backplate and looks great. It is a couple mm taller. Also the rear part of the engine does in fact protude about 6mm further back towards the motor mount. I would definitely call it a drop in replacement for the 1.40s, provided that you have enough clearance from the rear motor mount bolts to the front of the base of the mount.
I think I need to do something to support the servo but I so dont want to add anymore weight to the front.

OK,
Getting really really close now.
Installed the tank mount and 20oz dubro tank. ( possibly need a bigger tank?
Installed the jaccio switch.
Installed stabilizer set screws.
Installed fuel dots.
Installed a 2-56 socket head screw in the needle valve on the engine.
Installed the antenna tube and put the antenna in, but need to set the receiver in its place.
Also, I checked the CG and it was not surprisingly more nose heavy. I switched to a lightened back plate( had a feeling i would need it so I ordered an extra). I would imagine that the 4 blade prop is helping to cause that.
OK, so I mounted the tank directly over the wingtube instead of in front of the wingtube and it looks like it will balance out almost perfectly with the battery pack way on the back of the pipe tunnel structure. Looks good.
