Hey John,
Thanks and yer right. since I was already redoing my set up I'll go with a wheel, the mk ball link will be as inside as possible, I hope to be able to lessen the length of the control horn bolt a good bit to decrease control rod angle.
I have about a 5 degree angle on the pushrod to servo arm - do you have any guess at to what the max defection is for the MK Ball Link... I am sure I am at the limits...

I am also thinking about going with a high quality heli ball link which will also elevate above the servo arm.
If I have to. I'll move the servos rails flush with the wing skin and let it all hang out

but I think I have options that will help me to keep servos flush.

Matt,
go back 2 pages and check out my plane
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=8300733
Mike's been working on anhederals since the beginning, he just got them right about 4-5 months ago.
they really make the plane look great on the ground but also washes the mixes out.
I am guessing you haven't seen all the other pics I've posted, go back through the pages to read and see more....

hey chris,
it's cut and ready to paint. it's basically a 3mm version of the current design, so it's going to be about half the weight, should fly good.
I've just been busy with work since the new years, which is a great thing !!!
I'll post some pics later this week or whenever I actually build it... I also have a new 3mm fierce that's all painted and ready for final assembly. My new bipe is a blast to fly.
too many toys, too little time

Well you can't go wrong with the VF3,...I flew Mike's at the contest last year. The plane is just AWESOME,...wish I had more time to fly it throught the P and F stuff. I was extreamely impressed on how well it locks lines and the feel in flight is incrediable. And the new anhederals from what I understand makes it even better.

The anhedrals make it more agile, for certain, and clean up the small amount of mix I was carrying before. I think I now have a tad here and there, like 1% downline maybe, and a hair of left rudder to idle mix (I'm trying it, not sure on it yet). No roll mix, 1% pitch mix with left rudder, mostly right off of center. Can't even see it move, not sure it's worth it or not. I think Arch's is the same, but dead zero on the pitch and roll. Hopefully after the repairs it'll be the same. Little more paint and it's back to texas....
I had a closer look at the rolls after some uh....wierd crap at Tangerine. My plane: dead straight. Dean's plane: dead straight. Wingo's plane: dead straight. Arch's plane (have video): dead straight. Fuqua's plane (have video): OFF! My best guess is wing incidence or CG, or both. This lead me to look closer at some old video of the prototype with the old stabs/wings/incidence: OFF!! In short, if your tail "wags" through a roll, fix it. it's probably incidence or CG or both. This will show up dramatically. Check it in uplines, downlines and straight and level at a fairly high speed. You'll know if you see it, if you're looking for it. You'll find if that tail rolls clean, you'll be carrying pretty close to zero mix and your uplines and downlines will be sweet. it will pull SLIGHTLY to the canopy in a downline, but only on a long one after gathering a good bit of speed.
That is all for now....

John,
have you any drawings to explain your statement regarding 'tangential' loads?
I ask because from my minds eye, if the pushrod is at a tangent in the neutral state, as a deflection is made the pushrod angle is reduced to the output arm ball link and therefore becomes neutral so should not cause the output arm to be in a stressd state [sm=confused_smile.gif] plus, the output arm has a ball link which has reduced (if any at all) friction and the surface output horn has a ball link, again, reduced or (if any at all) friction.
I have used the ball link/bearing output horn design for years and never encountered such problems, maybe it's the JR output arms I've been using all this time eh [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
Inquisitive regards,
Andy.

Andy,
Imagine this: for purposes of illustrating this, put a 1" spacer between the servo arm and the control inkage (ball joint). Now hold the control surface so that the linkage can't move and try to turn the servo arm. What happens to the arm? It will try to twist. If the linkage is perfectly in line with the arm (like it is when you use a clevis), this doesn't happen. It simply stalls the servo. Does that make sense? The twisting will eventually cause a plastic arm to break. Trust me! I've seen it happen in as few as 100 flights. A wheel is a better bet or even an aluminum arm will work. The thin plasic ones will eventually let you down.

Okay fellas. I am almost finished with my VF3 wings. I am trying to decide how to hinge the ailerons. The way I see it I have a few options. The first decision I need to make is to top hinge or have the hinge line on the centerline of the aileron. the second decision I need help with is CA vs. pinned hinges. If I top hinge I imagine it would be easier to use CA hinges. What are you all doing on your VF3's or similar pattern ships?

The way I have settled on after hmm...well many wing panels, is center hinged with CA hinges. If you do it that way, you should have no aileron differential whatsoever, and it's light and easy. if you're covering the wings, seal the bottom gap line with monokote, and if painting, use clear mylar tape. I haven't heard of a failure yet and if there's an easier or lighter method, I'd love to hear about it.
Top hinging is definitely pretty, and can be done, but MAY pick up some differential. That's a thick wing and the gap on the bottom will be pretty sizable when you're done.
It's one of those "whatever you prefer" things, that's just my preference.

I use about 1/4" at the tips, about 5/16" at the roots. That's about the best I have found for never running out of throw, and not having TOO much gap.

well guys I have been kind of bord lately and was wanting to start flying some indoors. So I took the Black Magic foamie kit that Dean Funk cuts out and decided to cut my own 3mm depron indoor model. In one night Ive been able to get the fuse done. here is some pics I think it looks pretty close to the real one.

Thanks bro... it really came together quick. I cut the foamie with a soldering iron with a xacto razorblade attachment that came with it. and it just when through the foam like butter. and then I used a block sander to smooth out the edges.
but this did take all of my foam. so building will kind of stop for a little bit, till I get some more.

Dean,
Why don't you come over and paint in my paint shop? It's a no-draft, dust bowl. I set the plane up on a little grade-school desk. I throw some plastic over the cat litter boxes. I close the bathroom door. I crack open a beer, load up my Husky siphon-feed detail gun and shoot away. Bring lotsa sandpaper. You'll have to rub each coat, but it comes out pretty good... LOL

Kids are home now. But jeez.....I remember when I was in school, a few kids got nailed for bringing knives etc (this IS Ga after all) but assault weapons????? ***??????

Thats' just insane,....I have been trying to push our local schools to purchase hand held metal detector wonds or the fixed units like the airports have,..I sell them and install them. A bunch of schools across the country have them installed?
WOW,........the serious nature of it dosen't grab a hold of you until it happens in your own backyard,..[&:]
Hope all are well,....................[8D]
