Default Testing prototype sound card

I installed the prototype sound card for Heng Long tanks in a stock HL KV1. This is using stock HL electronics.

Final testing has been completed and a couple of changes need to be made, and then it is ready for manufacturing. This will be plug and play.

I guess this was recorded with the stock speaker. I would like to hear the engine sound using a better quality speaker, or with motor disconnected, to avoid it meshing with the gear sound.

Sounds pretty good.  Borealis has a good point about seeing its full potential.

But, at the same time, I like being able to hear what it would sound like in my tank...which still has the stock speaker and metal gears running.

Tamiya speakers seem to give the best bass response. I could hook up a Tamiya speaker to this, but I stayed away for upgrading too much, as this is supposed to be a stock Heng Long with the sound card. However, yes I agree the better quality speaker you can put in this the better the sound will be reproduced. This has stock HL gears as well, so you have that rattle to contend with, but like Philipat stated, this is a stock tank. I didn't want to add a $50 speaker, and $100 set of gears and then claim that is what you can expect to hear if you buy this card. I obviously would recommend the best speaker, and the quietest set of gears you can get, but reality is reality. If you buy this sound card and hook it up to a Stock Heng Long, this is what you will get.

I will plug in a Tamiya speaker and demonstrate it with that later today. I also have a Ford V8 sound file that I can upload in this. Perhaps this diesel sound is not quite ready for prime time I put this together last night, but maybe I need to fine tune it a bit. I can tell you this sound file was made from Russian V12. With these sound cards , the sound file is a big part of how good the result is. I could add some more bass and see what happens.

What you guys think and say is important, as this is the prototype.

Thanks

Anyone ever taken a laptop apart to see if they have anything usable? I've never tried to put any sort of real bass through them, but the quality seems to be pretty good.

Apparently this is a random image of a Dell speaker setup http://cdn3.iofferphoto.com/img/item...0/497/4OGV.jpg Looks a little large, but I can't imagine there aren't different setups, and that they couldn't be cut down a bit.

Very nice. Iknow you have been working hard on one for a Sherman so post up already. Can't wait to hear the Ford engine sounds you've come up with.

Yea...the engine needs more bass...I couldn't hear much rumble or rev once the sprockets were going.  Maybe it was the volume.

One question I have...what are the series of buttons you push and how does this work (not from a technical standpoint...how do I use it standpoint)?  I ask because I noticed that you're moving the turret and firing the main gun and machine gun without starting the engine.  I thought you had to start the engine to get any of the other functionality from the tank.

Basically you have to hit the HL button to turn on the RX 18 and all its functions. The speaker is unplugged and that is why you don't hear any HL sounds.

To start the engine you just have to touch the throttle, and the engine start sequence is played. The machine gun is played by hitting the MG button. Cannon sound and recoil is played with left stick up. Elevation and turret rotation is triggered by normal left stick movement.

Engine has an auto shutdown, that after 20 seconds of idling will shut down. All the sounds still work, so you can blast the cannon and machne gun with the tank engine off. As soon as you hit the throttle the engine starts up again. The user has to set the throttle position to your liking. This is set so you can rev the motor and not have the tank move. This is a one time, one button push thing that you only have to do the first time you configure the sound card to the tank.

This device can also be used with a hobby radio if you decide to upgrade your radio later. An addtional amplifier is an option and can be added if you want, but it is pretty loud.

As far as bass response goes, it always looses something on video when compared to live. Every video I have taken , whether it be El Mod or anything else sounds slightly more "tinny" on video then it does live.

I tried a new sound set. Not sure if it sounds better. Also has an upgraded speaker.

I loaded up the Ford V8 sound set, and used an upgraded speaker. This sounds pretty sweet, and points the way home for me. I have to ensure I build all the sound files to this quality. I will have to go back and work on the 12 cylinder diesel some more. However this shows the hardware is solid and works well with the stock HL electronics.

Hey I'm really glad you came up with this. This is definitely a huge improvement from the stock HL sound!

Pls let us know when it is available for sale. I'm VERY interested in it.

That one sounded good. I'm glad that the MG sounds are different between the two setups, too.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, the cannon boom sound is heard on the left stick. That means that if I leave it with airsoft, the sound will go. How will that work with the time it takes to spool the airsoft gun?

Remember this is totally user definable. It will come pre loaded with your choice, but you can load any sound set in it you want.

For airsoft you would have to add a contact switch on the gun, and wire the sound trigger circuit to that. I will include instructions on how to do that. I haven't bought an airsoft tank in a long time , but someone told me they now have a contact switch built into them. If this is true then it would be really easy, but would require some soldering, I think. I might have to buy a new airsoft tank and check it out. Perhaps HL brings some wiring back to the RX 18 from that contact switch already.

If anyone has an newer HL airsoft tank, I wouldn't mind hearing if there is a contact switch on the gun and where it ties into the HL electronics.

Sounds good.
Will this work with RX13 and 14 and 18 boards?

The V8 sounds GREAT!! One question, I'm new to the RX 18 board. How do you make the engine rev before the tank moves with stock HL parts? Do Ineed to have a better radio for that or is that an adjustment that can be made on the HL receiver board?

This is exactly what I have been waiting for. Can`t wait to see the final product. Also would there be one available for an Abrams tank?I`m in the process of converting a 1/18th static version to RC and it would be great if I could get something like this and make sound like it should.

Yes this will work with all the HL S&S electronic sets out there. The reving of the motor is dependant on the sound set design. On the V8 I allowed for this, and will do the same as I work my way through other sound sets. When you set your throttle stick at the original configuration, you set the on to be just slighty before the motors turns. This allows the rev up possibility. There is no hobby radio involved in this. You can get this effect with the sound card and the stock radio. However the sound card works equally as well with a hobby radio too.

Some minor ergonomic changes to the board design need to be made to make it easy to plug and play using HL 8 wire cables. Then it is ready for manufacture. Stay tuned.

All sounds good.  One request:  thus far a lot of the discussion has focused on the engine and rightfully so...but as you develop the sounds remember to make the MG and main gun sounds as accurate as possible.  Turret rotation, too.  Sounds like you were already trying to do that with the MG sounds...but just wanted to throw it out there.

You bet. Compared to the engine sounds the turret traverse and machine gun are simple!!!!!!

I worked on the Russian V12 sound file more. In highway gear they really screamed. Definately different then the Ford V8
