Default Strange Symptom (Backdraft 8e)

Yesterday while running the Backdraft, it started to act like the gears were slipping. My first thought was the spur gear was stripped due to a gear mesh issue (this was before Ieven took the body off), because of afew that have reported on here some mesh issues. But after taking the body off, the pinion and spur gears looked good. There was definitely something slipping and making a metal on metal clicking noise. With the body off and car off the ground, Ihit the throttle to watch the motor turn the spur gear. They were turning fine, but the slipping, metal to metal clicking noise, was there and the diff gears were not fullyengaging.

I knew it was time to take the diff's apart to inspect. But, both set's of diff's looked great (except for the lubrication-some in rear, none in front). I inspected the spur gear housing and the motor pinion gear. All looked good.

I put everything back together and gave it a test run. The problem was still there for a minute or 2. Then, it's like something clicked and the gears started engaging again and everything was back to normal...

What am I missing here?Slipper clutch? What else can Iinspect?

Another problem that I've had for the past week or so is that I'm having trouble getting the buggy to reverse. Going from forward to reverse you have to push the trigger forward once to break, twice to get it to go into reverse. I can push the trigger a bunch of times and nothing happens. The other controls work fine. To get it to reverse, I have to move theswitch to reverse (this is on the transmitter) so that pulling back on the trigger is reverse and pushing forward is forward. Then everything works fine. Any ideas here?

How long are you waiting to let it go into reverse? It will most likely have to slow down till it can function properly.

The reverse issue is actually a feature on the ESC, its a reverse lockout that allows a short delay before sending the reverse signal to help with drivetrain longevity and control.

Have you checked the center diff, pinion set screw, wheel fasteners, drive axles & hubs, ?

On the reverse issue, it's almost like it's not getting a signal. I've got the ESCprogrammed Ithink for 40% break when letting off the trigger. When it comes to a complete stop, I can push the trigger forward several times and nothing happens. But, if I reverse the switch on the transmitter so pulling the trigger is reverse and pushing it forward is forward, reverse works fine...That's got me stumped.

On the other issue, Idid not check the center diff. The pinion set screw looked good, wheel fastners looked good, drive axles looked good and hubs were fine. The batteries are charging now. I'll run it until it happens again and maybe throw a quick video up on here so you guys can see / hear what it's doing. I'll need to check the center diff also. For some reason, I was struggling getting that apart. Any quick tips for getting that apart?

Check your radio "trim"knob,if it's working when ya have the switch reversed.. (you may have it trimmed too far in one direction?)

There was also a post a while back about a transmission problem in (i think) a Volcano S30.. If you find that post, you may find the cause of your issue? I think they had a similar problem and it was due to one of the shafts sliding off to the side or something? I"ll see if I can find a link real quick.. Here it is..About half way down there's a picture of the tranny in question.. If that's like yours, maybe the problem is the same?Good luck! Here's the link:http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9423961/tm.htm

Thanks for the link to that post. I'll have to tear into it sometime this weekend to actually see what's going on. We've got a foot of snow on the ground right now. Hopefuly that will be gone or it's time for hot laps in the garage to diagnose.

On the forward / reverse problem, Adjusting the trim knob will eventually send it forward without touching the throttle, but it won't send it backwards. But, if I use the reverse switch on the transmitter, it will send it into reverse, but not forward. I don't know if it's the receiver or the transmitter at this point. Weird...

I have noticed that sometimes if it wont go reverse, turn your trim on your radio up till it starts shuttering forward, then turn it back a hair so it just barely not moving forward, then it will go reverse. Sound weird but it works for me and my buddy.

Getting trouble to reverse it is due to trim setup. this happened to me on EarthQuake 8E and I found a solution which is easy.

when having the trouble to reverse the truck, I set the throttle trim slightly where truck starts moving slowly to forward. I then put the trim back a little bit where truck stops moving forward. that means at the moment I have found the Throttle trim center.

i then turn the truck off, transmitter off (Using redcat GSM-2C 2.4G) Turn on the transmitter and Truck and everything works just fine

Give it a try. its all in the throttle trim setup

Cheers

We'll, that's an interesting thing to try. I'll check it out this evening a report back on how it works. Thanks for the info...
