C-124 Globemaster
I'm happy to help you guys "populate" this new forum. Somebody gave me a damaged model of the C-124, 82" wingspan and set up rudder, elevator, ailerons, Fowler flaps, main wheel brakes and navigation lights. Near as I can determine, it was built from a Japanese kit around 1964. It had four OS Wankel engines...which I didn't get. Anyway, it needs some parts which I can make, if I have to...but don't look forward to. I brought the plane to a few fun flies and asked around. A guy said he had a kit at home. I bought it, mildewed plans, termite-chewed wood and all. I found that though it had the same fuselage and wingspan, this one was made for U-Control!
Anyway, if any of you hear about someone who has parts of the r/c version of this kit, I'd really appreciate being told. I'd love to restore this bird to pristine shape, complete with Wankels. Thanks for listening. Jerry S.

I have the same C-124 kit (although unbuilt). Mine is in very good shape but it is controlline as well. I have seen many of these kits...all controlline. I believe that the controlline version was the only one ever produced. Lots of guys have modified these airplanes to fly RC but I have never seen an RC kit version. I intend to build mine RC but have not gotten into the redesign stages as yet. razorback11

Razorback...What you say is interesting. From what I learned, my plane was built by two guys who flew the full scale aircraft to/from Korea. The model was never flown, though (theoretically) fully functional. It was suspended from a ceiling of a den or club room until one or more of the lines broke! If these gents were modelers, I could understand the adaptations, but the tracks that the Fowler flaps ran out from (which are broken and partially missing) are plastic, which makes me think that maybe a few did come out in R/C. Have you seen or heard of how the model flew in C.L. configuration. I'm pretty sure the wings are scale but there doesn't seem to be much wing surface for this heavy bird.

Vince, I never heard that. That's a good subject to study up on. Last year at the Warbirds Over Delaware Fly-In, I met and spoke at length with a man who piloted the C-124 to the Far East. He commented that the bird carried a tremendous payload and that he always marveled (to himself) that those unlikely looking wings could do the job so well.

I've got two kyosho U-control C-124 kits, a DC-6B, one B-29 and a supper G Connie...all 80+ inch wing spans. I picked them up over 33 years ago while flying in Sout East Asia. I would part with them if some one wants them all.

KYsoho C-124
Enclosed is a pic I built back in 1970...made a new wing for it..differnet airfoil..design for RC....4 OS 25 2 strokes..flaps ,no retracts.....not enough right thrust on the engines...took off ,went left and couldn't save it....probably bigger ailerons would of helped too......made the size that the plans called for....4 engines running do make a nice sound of their own....

The C-124 had a Davis wing, same as B-24. Had the misfortune to crawl through wing to ck. tach generator wires for an engineer that couldn`t tell if it was still turning ! This at about 8000 feet and mid-Atlantic . This was a good old bird. Old Shakey,we used to call them. big max 1935

VINCE: Do you really think that Donald Douglas would put a Boeing wing on one of his air-craft ? Shame on you! They used the B-50 wing on C-97. They all had a high aspect ratio wing, but the B-24 & C-124 used the Davis air foil which was patented. They say it was close to a perfect airfoil for what it would lift and still have low drag. The neatest thing I remember is a Lockheed demo pilot making a short field take off and shutting down #1& 2 engines then banking in to them while climbing out,our pilots stood there with mouths open. Isn`t this fun ? MAX

Ooops, big max 1935 is right. After some research, I discovered that the C124 DOES NOT have a B29 wing. I guess all those years have taken their toll. Danget, I almost made it through the entire year without a mistake

Vince: If you had been one of them other guys I would not forgive you, but being you ex-USAF,your on my side.Besides I think that`s the only time I have been right all year! I got out in 1964 after nine years, so you got to fly on later birds than me. I go back to B-25, C-45,47, 53 ,54,118,119,121 & the one I spent most time on ,C-124. Even spent a year at Thule with F-89D`s. Being an instrument man we got them all. Merry Christmas to you & yours. big max 1935

I went in in 1969 and went to Shepard AFB, Norton AFB, Cam Rahn Bay RVN, and Dyess AFB. Discharged in 1973. While in Vietnam I was on C17's, C123's, and C130's. At Norton I trained on C141's, and ocassionally flew on Air National Guard C124's when they came in to Norton, just for grins. They use to refer to the Globemaster as "Old Shakey" and described it as 80,000 rivets flying in loose formation.

Vince: Got a tear in my eye after seeing your picture of my old bird. We used to fly a lot of airborne out of Ft.Bragg & Ft. Campbell. Learned not to stand by ramps when the troopers loaded for their first jump, seems like they had a little trouble with breakfast. Here I thought you were going to ask me what a C-53 was? We got a lot of TDY,from Germany to Deep Freeze at Antarctica. Sure do miss it. big max 1935

Vence I was staytion at Nortin AFB in the early 70s and I can remember loading a couple Shakeys that were flown by the Air National Guard. I know why they call them Shakeys. If you been inside them when they are doing a run up on the motors you'll know.

C-124's...and beyond
What with all the reflections and opinions you guys have lodged, I'm glad that I started this subject about the Globemaster. You've inspired me to get off my duff and restore the critter, especially now that I persuaded the previous owner to sell me the four OS Wankels which were originally mounted in the model. Unlike you multi-engine guys, I was an U.S. Army helicopter crew chief in Cent. & So. America 1955-57. I was even lucky enough to help the (pre-Russian) Nicaraguan Air Force with vibration problems they had with the P-51Ds they'd purchased from the Swedes.

Vince I am not for sure if it was the C53 or C54. If myb memory is right they were like a DC3 C47 same plane but the C 54 was bigger and had 4 engines.

Vince: I believe you are thinking of C-54 . A C-53 looked like a Gooney bird but it was just a troop carrier , had a small door similar to an DC-3. There were so many versions of that aircraft it would make a book full. Talked to a old Douglas engineer one time at Long Beach ,said that they really didn`t know too much about the new metals, so they made every thing extra heavy.
Well it stood the test of time! Cargomaster,Liftmaster,some where is the C-74? May be we will get it figured out some time?
