50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!

Updated Pictures...
OK, the yellow red and black scheme really appealed to me ( everyone likes the Honda scheme ) so I this instead with the intention of changing some of the graphics to personalize the plane. Right from the time I opened the boxes and saw those black stripes I hated them. Then when I saw that almost all of them were peeled up a bit a the points I knew I was going to remove them.
Here are the pictures of the progress so far, stripes being removed, and new scheme going on. the big red area on the wings once the stripes were gone just screamed for checkers. The look really good from about 3 feet or more but my inexperience in laying down monocote and working with an iron shows. BUT... I am really happy with it and will start on the second wing tomorrow. I also plan to run a blue 1/4" blue stripe on the delineation line on the wings between the yellow and the checked area. Tail and elevators will get a bit of checkering too I think. Still a work in progress and will have to see how the plane looks with the wings on. don''t want to overdue it on the checkers

Hello all,
I took my WH Suk to the field on Sunday for radio testing and got rained out. While there a friend suggested I find stronger springs for the tail wheel assembly and suggested that ground handling would be better with stronger springs. I searched and found some different sysems of varying complexity and cost $$. This is what I came up with. The zip ties are placed to compress the springs and are adjustable for tension and wheel / tail alignment. with the zip tie heads at either end. The swivels at the ends provide a clean connection and I soldered the key ring style ring to prevent it from stretching out.
I probably spent $5
I suppose this has been done before but I thought I''d post here for the group.

Yeah your right about that.
fishing tackle shops are good for niffty fittings like this sort of thing and they are usually rated for strength.

Very nice Obee!, I made some compression springs for my Suk using cotter pins but I really like the zip ties, may have to rework mine.

Got a couple questions for ya, where did you end up placing your batteries? I am going to be taking my plane over to a friends house early this week to balance it and just looking for a starting point as you seen to have a very similar set-up to mine. I am running a header with a td75k can. I hear people talking about the 26 being tail heavy and having to move batteries to the nose or add weight in the nose.
some pictures would be nice also if ya could....
Thanks

I don't see any mention of what engine you are using, this is important when discussing balance.
I like the [non] sound of the canister setup.

I have a DL50 with a stock muffler in mine and it was tail heavy - even used heavy batteries - 2500 4.8 v ign by the firewall, and 4500 6 volt front of fuse. Mine does have a virtual cockpit with a pilot that weighs almost 6 oz ( i know ...too heavy) so I used 4" stand offs to keep me from adding any more weight and the prop distance from the cowl is fine. The plane weighs 18 lbs 2 oz and flies great

Hey guys to change the subject a bit, I got a newbie question. I just about have mine ready to balance. This is my first experience with the 5955 servos or any digital for that matter. They seam noisy. Is this common? Meaning when moving the control seurfaces, they are fairly loud. Also, sometimes when at rest, they buzz. Is this normal? Then when I put the throw gauges on, the extra weight causes the surface (aileron) to flutter and buzz??
Thanks guys for all of your experience and help.

Regarding balance, my cg is about 1/8" forward of the center line of the wing tube. It has a DL50, Jtek wrap around muffler, 1200mahr Nicad for the ignition, and an A123 for the receiver. The ignition battery is on the side of the engine box and the A123 is right behind the firewall.

I have a DL 50 Engine also arrow seems to run great from the 2 times I have started it a got it warmed up enough to respond to the throttle. Darkwarder, the metal gear servos are going to be nosier than you are used to normally and the wood/covering on the plane will amplify the noise... digital servo buzzing is normal any resistance on the servos ( weight of the control surface ) can cause that .
As to the fluttering with throw gauge. it shouldn't move at all with gauge on just maybe buzz a bit more. Explain the fluttering you speak of a bit more please.

Maybe twitch is a better way to describe it. I take the gauge off and it stops. It's enough to make reading the gauge difficult though.

Oh one other quick question, almost a poll if you will, so say..you built you plane and lay out the electronics and fuel system as close to center line as possible ad off set the throttle servo install by putting your switch on other side of fuse . pretending the fuse is laterally balanced perfect without wings on . I know it's not bt with wings on are you noticing a severely out of balance plane or just having to add a tiny amount of weight to wing tip or even better move a battery slightly to one side of the radio tray to balance ?

Hello group,
good to see this thread light up a bit. I'm at work today and can't do a lot of posting and pics. I will try to do it tomorrow and answer some of these questions.
Tom, to answer yours: 3MM 53 with a cannister , A 123 batts I do have a Aces of Iron pilot in the cockpit but they're very light, but it's still an addition.

Don't worry about the servos, I couldn't believe the sound that came out of the whole plane when I first turned it on, but after consultation with others ,they said stop worrying and start flying, I wonder if you can get quite ones??????.
Hey axxis, I really don't understand what you are saying, or, could you put that in Australian please, the first bit I got ya! just the last bit, cheers mate

Use the deflections noted in the manual for low rates. I think that's about +/- 12 on the elevator and about +/- 15 at the ailerons. 20 degrees for the rudder. Check the manual to be sure.
If you're using the 3mm 53 you will not come out tail heavy. The DL is a lighter engine. As usual, don't secure the rudder servo until you know how the plane will balance. The rudder servo can be placed inside the middle of the fue or in the tail just for this reason. It's an easy 2-1/2 ounces you can effectively move from one point to another for c/g purposes.
The ignition and receiver switch locations have an insignificant impact on lateral balance. Unless you're a perfectionist there's not a lot of gain with the worry. If it doesn't consistenly drop the same wing over and over in a hard vertical pull don't bother with lateral balance.
Place the deflection gauge closer to the root of the surface to mitigate the servo twitching if your having any. You're not the first it's happened to during the 5955 set up process and that's how I minimized the issue on mine. Buzzing is very normal for digital servos. They are working against gravity when at neutral.

Yea it was late and I dont quite understand it myself now that I am reading it
. Basically ( short version ) are any of you that have your planes up and flying noticing a big difference in weiht from one wing to the other? But also pat did pretty much answer it for me, I'm not going too bother to balance it laterallt at first unless I notice something amiss

Yes aaxiss, I did have one wing quite a bit heavier than the other. My solution was to use lead tape on the wing tip of the light wing. It worked out beautifully.

Hello,
Some general shots of my Suk: Cockpit/ pilot, venting/exhaust, tail wheel and interior.
the Pilot is a Aces of Iron 25% and the cockpit is built of some light foam re-sawed from blocks I had left over from building kayak seats. the instrument panel was found on this thread I believe. I'll attach the file here.
I have some lead mounted to the engine box to achieve balance at this point. Some of it may be removed to change balance after a few flights. I have yet to fly this thing as I'm waiting for a break in the weather and my schedule.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the forum participants for posting and making this an enjoyable process. Without all the information found here a noob as myself would have struggled much more. Another deserving recognition here is Tom @ Wild Hare. The customer service and professionalism is top notch. With the combination of a great product and product/ customer support I'll be back for more. When I took the plane out for radio testing at my club field I saw some people looking at this plane like they were starving wolves. We may see some more WH planes there.
Thanks TOM
