Virginian thats about right, but I measure mine from the front of the cowl to the back of the prop in the horizontal position were the prop is the closest to the cowl. Looking from the front of the plane on the left side mine comes in at .750" or about 19mm. From your picture you should be close to that.

I agree with TOM - I used some oak hardwood, 7/8" thick, drilled a hole through them and presto, instant spacer. With my DA50 and the standard 2.5" stand-offs, this gives me just over 1/4" clearance from the cowl on the right side, and a little more on the left (due to right thrust).

I asked the question because there are guys here who have already completed their project and have flown their plane. I am looking for the best setup from your experiences. I intend on using the stock standoffs with a spacer. Just curious what the best results were. 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" past the cowl.

Having flown Yaks, both of the Wild Hare Sukhois, and two smaller Suks some years back, my experience has been that the farther out the prop is from the cowl the better the power response. Think about how much propeller extends beyond the face of the cowl and contemplate how much "work" is being efficiently performed at the area covered by that big open bucket. Why do people think round cowl planes fly so slow?
I set mine up close to an inch out. My big Yak is a little further than that. If it looks good the distance won't hurt anything. Your choice so don't let what others have make your decision for you.

Well... my Goal between Christmas Eve, and now, was not only to get my Sukhoi finished & maidened, but also to get a whole load of flying time in! I failed in almost every area!!! However, I have almost finished the plane as of today, and had a run out of the engine. Just a couple of final details to take care of, and hopefully, will maiden her on Tuesday

Question for the masses: I'm gonna run an A123 with 2 switch leads (going to 2 switches) and a separate charging lead in my Sukhoi. Do I need to put a separate charging jack on the fuse? Leave it alone and remove the canopy to charge? Kinda confused here. Thanks for the help.

No need for a separate charge jack. Simply remove the canopy when it's time to charge. Provides that moment in time for checking the rest of the components as well.

FYI, I completed my plane, started this thread, and posted all the original build info and pics about a year ago. I have a hunch I know what this plane is about in about every aspect.

It's about time I throw my hat into the WH Sukhoi ring. I've had this in my backroom for far too long - so it's time to start reading this thread in detail and get my butt in gear to get this plane in the air. Thankfully, I have the sage experience of T.O.M. to guide me through getting it from being just an airframe to an excellent-flying plane.
I very much look forward to getting this airborne with your help.

Well... I maidened the Sukhoi today! Pretty par for the course. In line with what others have found, mine needed a little up-elevator trim. As far as side thrust went... perfect! Flew really nice, and precise! CG was a little far back compared to what others quote (about 1 inch behind centre of wing tube), but for me, this felt perfect! Still needed a very slight push of elevator when inverted. Flew on high rates, with maximum throws that the surfaces would allow, and she seemed real nice. Engine leaked fuel on test run, which on the last plane (WH Edge 540T v2) I thought was fuel spitting out of the carb. Anyway, the test run a couple of days ago revealed that the leak was on the crankcase (3W 56iB2 twin). So, yesterday, I pulled the engine out, stripped it, and reassembled with Anaerobic high strength gasket sealant... perfect now!!! I have the carb diaphragm housing vent mod done, whereby the atmospheric pressure vent is extended into the fuselage, with a 35mm film canister... But, neglected to cut out part of the covering film at the rear underside of the plane, so I guess the fuselage was pressurised, causing the engine to hunt a little in the midband. Engine is running on MTW RE2 tuned pipe (was on two canisters in the Edge), and I can't believe how smooth and quiet it runs on the pipe... absolute bliss!!! I expected the plane to slow down a lot for landing, but found she wanted to glide on just like any other??? Real nice though! In all... love it! Oh, had to modify the canopy screw-down blocks, as otherwise, it would have pulled the sides of the fuselage in too far when tightening the screws, and damaged something. Will get pics of this... easy fix!

Great to hear you flew the plane Mike t5, how did it react to the max throws, mine leaps all over the place with any more than about 15degs on the elavator, ailerons are cool. How much have you got on the elavators??
My son came home the other day for a short break, he hasn't flown for nearly a year and has never flown a plane this size before, you know what i'am going to say don't ya, could not believe you could do that much with my precise plane????

Stupid thing is... I set up dual rates on the elevators (never on any past plane) because of what I read on here. Then, like a dumb***, I took off and flew on full rates, which are about 45 degrees! Was fine at that though, and landed on that too. Felt normal to me in fairness.
