I have a Saito FA-80 (not the new FA-82) collecting dust in my workshop. Up to now I've only used 2-stroke engines. I'm really turned on by the Funtana 40 and the U Can Do 3D. Would this engine be a good match for either of these planes? I am interested in 3D-style aerobatics. Any thoughts, anybody?

well i have sat here and read all of these threads since aug 1 and built my ucd w/saito 100 and now i was going to maiden it sat. but the first wind in 2 months is here. but i wanted to say thanks to you guys for all the info because i live next to death valley ca and there is no help around except on here and you guys got me through it and its done.maybe next sat.

well guys i need a little input. to get my saito 100 to run with the glow unplugged i have to set my main mixtue screw 1.5 turns from bottom and my idle screw 1 or less turns from bottom. im at 1600ft and 95 degrees.is thi to lean.it wont run any richer if i unplug the glow

How much time do you have on the engine? What kind of fuel are you using? Should run darn rich for first 10 minutes according to manual. Needle is out a few turns to do this. I use power panel with adjustable power level for glow plug, turn the plug power down but not off when running-in engine. Not surprised if won't run when new w/o plug power.

i have run a gallon so far, i ran it 5 turns outon the main mix and flush on the idle for the first 45 min and now im trying to get it set to fly so i tached it to 9900 and backed it off 300 and then set the idle at 2 turns in from flush andit wont run if i unplg the glow so i leaned it out on the idle to 1 turn out and it will run ok, ijust dont want to go to lean on the idle.it does run good but i dont want to burn it up. im running powermaster 2020. i dont have varible glow.

IMO you could lean the idle since you've run a gallon through. Don't think you'll hurt anything as long as the engine is a little rich. I check mine by squeezing the fuel line. If it speeds up before it slows down or stops, it's running rich. I leaned the idle on my 100 on the second tank of gas. Just kept sneaking the idle mixture in until it ran smooth, but made sure it was on the rich side of peak idle.

gjeffers. I suggest getting the idle to the point where it won't taxi in low grass. If you haven't flown a UCD, they float so much they won't land with fast idle. When you try to force it down, poof goes the gear due to the fast response with the large surfaces. Good luck.

well flightwatch if you didnt catch it ,i live 30 miles from death valley, so theres no grass around just tumbleweeds and sand. i do have my own private 1000ft asphalt runway and landing is really smooth most of the time(no wind). but i have my idle down to about a smooth 2800 w/zinger 15x5.so i think ill be ok.the air here is also hot &thin so that helps to. i am new and self taught w/alpha and arrow trainer and plan on just basic aerobatics (although i can hover my arrow) thanks for reply

ok guys i need a starter that will turn this saito 100 over with no problemo. my hangar 9 hd aint so hd. also what battery. my chicken stick is getting sore.

I have a tower heavy duty starter rigged to a $15 7 amp gel cell from Academy and it has no trouble starting my Saito 180.
On another note, I'm thinking about getting the 40 size UCD and I have a few questions:
1. Is there very much coupling in knife edge?
2. Can it do knife edge spins?
3. I was going to put a Saito 82 in it, but is anyone flying it with a 91 size 4 stroke?
A Saito 91 for example weighs less than an OS 70, about 20 grams more than the 82, costs less than the 82, and can swing a bigger prop.
On another note, I'm thinking about getting the 40 size UCD and I have a few questions:

2. Can it do knife edge spins?

gjeffers, I use a Sullivan 12 volt low power starter with 10 1700 mA nicads. If I place the prop at the end of the compression stroke, start of exhaust stroke, the starter builds up enough inertia to swing thru the power stroke. If you don't have a starter, a more powerful starter is a better solution. I just added another cell tonight, making it 11 cels, 13.2 volts. The 10 slightly run down cells wouldn't turn a .60 2 stroke this afternoon. Which is another solution: buy a cheap starter and put more power to it.

This starter will crank just about anything. I have the one with the 3000mah NiMHs, and it spins my OS 160 faster than the engine idles

It has a Saito .91 with a APC 15x4W prop. Excellent power and hover at around 1/2 throttle. Total weight is 5lbs and 15 ounces with a 6V RX pack.
KE coupling is minimal - I have not bothered to mix it out yet - not until I get the CG where I want it.

Although a few folks report little KE coupling, the majority of people including myself suffer from pretty severe KE coupling. In my case I've mixed 95% of it out and only need to tweak it a bit mroe with my Futaba 9C. I've posted my settings somewhere in this thread. Many pages ago.

I have a Vortech spinner. Dave Brown Products will custom-cut the spinner for whatever prop you want.
Flight times have not been a problem. It requires so little power to stay in the air that you don't burn much fuel. I set my timer for 10 minutes and land with plenty of reserve.

thanks CUMN THRU that was exactly what i was looking for. but i guess my chicken stick will get a workout because come hell or high water im gona maiden my ucd60 sat. (well as long as the wind dont blow to hard.)thanks
