GP Cap 232
#1327
Wow, this is great information, I have read it through from the start because I have my Cap on order
. My plan is to go with OS 1.60 and perry pump, and from the info I got I know a 18 x 6 is best fit for that. I will pin the firewall, use metal geared 3305 servos. Balance the plane at recomended CG, with my rudder pull pull system at mid ship. The snow is going fast here, have had the hanger 9 cub up once this spring and thats all.If it works, don't mess with it.[img][/img]

Hey Guys ,
I've read thru all the posts and I'm almost finished with my Cap. Great thread.
I have a zdz40 installed, all hitec digitals, spektrum 9ch, a123 bat.
Trying to keep this one on the light side so no smoke. I'm about to install the mpi on/off switch. Does anyone have pics on what they did and where your switches are located. I mounted the ignition switch on the firewall by the cowl mounts with a piece of angle alum.
Post pics if you can,
Regards,
Dan

I added a piece of balsa in the open area aft of the former that the wing dowels go into.
Edit, Might want to consider buying the landing gear for the gp 330. It's a little stiffer and still matches.

hopefully I'll be able to float this one in and take it easy on the gear.... na.. who am I kidding...
Ok.. going to see how I'm going to install the switch now. I figured I would have to add some material on the side of fuse.
I wish GP and others would make it easier on us and provide cutouts for switches and fuelers.. Man, am spoiled with ARFS...

Finally got to fly my caps last weekend. Havent had the front cowl on yet, still breaking in the motor, went with the rcgf 45cc gas motor..
This is my third plane, first gasser....just moved up from a GP RV4...I have seven flights on her now, flys great, getting use to it being supper responsive compaired to what i just graduated from....I am having a helluva time landing it. Are runway is 300 ft long with a fence at both ends of it to clear. This plane does not want to land! I am wondering if flapperons would work on this plane to slow it down on the landing approach?

How's the balance on the plane? Engine Idle too high? This plane should hover in.

Hey Guys here is mine with BME 50cc engine, It flies like a dream. Having done 50+ flights on this one, Only issue that I have felt (& experienced on this one) is that you need to put her down very smoothly during landing Or it tends to pull the whole engine mount box out.

ClarkJ,
A 1.80 Saito would not be enough at all. Maybe a 2.20 Saito? A big OS 2 stroke or MOki would power it Ok. I have a Brison 40cc set aside for this bird for down the road...
Good Luck,
Ed

Well guys I finnally got my Cap home and am putting it together. I have never installed a pull pull system before. Maybe someone could help me out here. When all is installed and the cable snugged up, when I move the rudder all the way to one side, the cable that is not pulling goes a little loose. Is that normal for this kind of set up. Wouldn't you get flutter in the rudder with it doing that?
#1343
Thanks Ed, just seemed diferent to me, and wanted to make sure. It sure is a nice big plane, and I can't wait to fly it. It will be a while though because I have a new OS 160 in it with a perry pump, and will need to break it in a bit. My wife say's its to big and it wont fly. Just what I need to build my confidence.

Les,
This bird is very similar to my Midwest Cap 232 in size and weight. And by using a 2 stroke you will be on the lite side. This means you will have a very nice flyer that will out perform anything you have flown before.
The only tip I have to offer is I believe you should have your Elevator on a Dual rate switch for your maiden and have the low rate set to only 11 to 12 degrees of travel. The Elevator setup on a Cap is very powerful and doesn't require that much movement for effective control...
Your are really gonna enjoy this plane! :-)

One thing to do is set up your expo's big time.
I use :
Rudder 25% low rates 50% high rates
Aileron and Elevator 35% low rates and 70% high rates.
This is just my preference.. That way I can flip to high rates and I don't over control, feels like low rates around center stick
I know alot of people going 3X the amount of high rate expo to the low.
Again .. this is what works for me.. I'm sure everyone does thier own thing.
Enjoy,
Dan

That is some good info to have, I have never used expo before even though the radio has it. The other models I have don't need it. Man this thing is diferent than any model I have had. I think it would fly just by flapping the rudder back and forth the rudder is so big. I appretiate the advis, a guy would not want to wreck this plane. I have the Realflight sim and have been flying the Cap on there. Does anyone know if the sim is close to what the real model is like?
#1347
Well .. nothing is like the real thing.. Sims are great... but you know how that goes.
The one thing I like about bigger planes is that they are much more (somewhat) predictable that smaller models. Just take it easy and fly it scale like until you get used to it. If it goes deadstick... GO LONG.... something I keep in my mind this year after loosing a couple bigger ones last year.
Look me up on youtube under "frankeldan" I just put up a small ultimate sig and nearly crashed it this past weekend from yanking it up too early.
Cheers,
Dan

Hey Dan, I havent seen the video yet, I cant go on u-tube at work and at home I can only get dial up internet because I live in the country. I am going to try and see it at home, but it will take a while to download. Is your Cap ready to go yet? I have everything in and working good, balanced right on with the battery behine the firewall in that compartment. Going to start breaking in the engine this weekend hopefully. Mamma's got me putting ceramic tile in the bathroom, so I need to get some of that done too.

My Cap is 99% done. It's allways the last 1% I have trouble finishing. All that's left is to cut the cowl and mount it. I get sidetracked and get another project started before I finish the last.
Here are some pics of my progress.
Have fun with the tile work
Later,
Dan
