DW,

Actually, I only put that big round hole in the bottom a few weeks ago just because I couldn't get to the glow plug w/o taking off the cowl, however I have noticed it may have started to overheat on some hot humid days w/ extended hovering, but I really just learned to hover.... so part of my winter maintenance is going to be opening up the front a little more and thoes two side blisters and a bit more on the bottom... my pics made me realize I need to hit it with the heat gun too.

14 x 4 wood Zinger ??? how does that perform? spool up faster? I run a 14 x 4 W APC, might try the 13x4W APC again....

I would appreciate some opinions on engine type. I am an OS man when it comes to 2 cycle. I am a Saito man when it come to 4 cycle. I have a UCD 46 on order. I have now read the entire 146 pages of this thread in the past week. It seems hands down that this group prefer the Saito 82 on this plane. I went to my LHS last week to talk about engines. He said that one of his friends cannot slow the S 82 down enough to land. Had to add on board glow to make it idle slow enough to land it. We do have a small field. He recommended the OS 4 cycle 71 ultimate. It's less HP and will swing a smaller prop, and therefore take a shorter landing distance. Can I please have some comments from this group. Somewhere recently I read on this thread that the OS 71 ultimate has been discontinued. Does it have a problem? Thanks for any input. Jim

no,no,no, patnjim, the guy at the lhs should have reccomended a 14x4 prop in stead of recomending something smaller in engines, i think more will chime in and back me up on this one

GET THE SAITO 82 and go with a low pitch prop, that will slow it down(this thing lands like a turtle anyways) and will have the power you need to do anything your capible of or want to do imo[sm=thumbup.gif]

good luck, but you problably wont need luck with this plane, youll love it

oh, almost forgot patnjim, as far as the idle goes you dont need a on board glow to idle this engine, just break in according to manual and lean her down to a nice 2000-2200 rpm idle, aparently your lhs guy is not a motor man, sorry i mean engine[X(]

OS 70 Ultimate is not available.....Saito spanks it all day, price, power, weight. I have 200 flts on my Saito 72, 30% Wildcat Curtis Youngblood Heli, not sure why someone would need a glow driver or slowing it down, you will find that the low end idle screw will be almost all the way in after you run it in. If anything, the plane floats forever, gee, sometimes dead stick (i.e. run out of fuel) landings are easier, I have a 14x4 W APC on my 72, the 82 might even spin the 15x4 W?? See my post # 3666 on my set up.

Go Saito.

Wow Doug, your lucky nothing bad happened. I got in the habit of checking to see if my throttle stick is pulled back before starting.

Check with Greg G on the KE question. He mixed out the coupling that UCD's are known for by mixing on his radio. I dont know the details I keep forgetting to ask him.

I put my UCD in due to a Receiver failure I think. Greg and I took a half day and spent the day flying. It's not really totaled, but I should have the new one ready for the turkey fly.

perkinsm Looking forward to the turkey fly. Hope the weather cooperates. I'm sure the KE is something I will have to learn. need to burn this 15% nitro fuel out before than. I ordered 30% from Brown's Hobby. Curtis was showing me how to KE his *40 and lost it down in cemetery. Appropiate I guess. Saving $ to buy a foamie for times when field is not doable.

patnjim Listen to these guys about modifications & recomended engines. They know there stuff. Saitos love UCDs. use 14 x 4w props on 72 & 80, also 82. They love being inverted & idle is unbelivable.

Barry (CeeGee)Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha! Come back.

Doug - If the wind is acceptable at the turkey fly, I'll bring my foamy out and let you fly it.

Everyone - Heres a link to some interesting reading for those that have Futaba 9C's

Perkinsm, Thanks. That's interesting stuff. I have a 9C and the Higby book on the radio but haven't taken the time to ever set stuff up. I'll have to do that though.

Hey! Where's Barry?/? I miss him........[&o]

The MacDaddy,

How did you bolt on your Sullivan tailwheel assembly to the fuse?
I already glued on my horizontal stab so I dont remember if I could
have gotten to the otherside of the mounting area for the tailwheel.
Since I cant what do you recommend. I was going to use a self tapping
metal screw, remove them and harden with thin CA.

Suggestions?

I put the "Volt Watch up on the dash this time to make it easier to see.

Heres a few pics,,,,,,,,,,,,

I use Sullivan tail wheel brackets on everything.
Just use wood screws and put epoxy under the bracket (remove covering under bracket to expose bare wood). Tighten the screws and wipe off the epoxy that oozes out. Two or three screws work fine.

Great Idea, thank you very much. I will start to use them on everything.
I'm tired of the force a standard tailwheel assembly puts on a servo and
the hinges.

sdcranford, I've been real happy with the Sullivan tail wheels. I put them on every one I put together and they've worked great. [8D]

Hey Gjeffers. How are you doing? Have you been able to fly lately? Did you get your Edge?

Yea, I just used wood screws, harden w/ ca, I never glued it to the fuse.....never had a problem, I guess I would rather it rip the screws out than break off a wood section if it was epoxied.... plus moving it to the next airframe might be a chore?

I'll look forward to seeing your Edge Gary. I hope it comes soon. It should fly good for you Gary. It sounds like you're a good pilot. [8D] Personally I get too antsy waiting for stuff. Especially if I have to hide it from the wifey for a while....... [X(] I brought out the Mayhem that I had been hiding and showed it to my wife. Here's some pictures of it....... Big plane....... [X(] I'm thinking of getting a Funtana 40. I've been flying it on Aeroflight Pro and it flies nice.

Who thought of this ?/?/? [:-] Now here's a product for your ya. [X(] I'm sure every dad / flyer out there needs one of these. You can even order extra decals if you happen to need them. . I guess this is one of those "for the guy that's got everything" type gifts........ Yikes!! It shows that you can even get the "wood bag for gas passer" I wonder if they meant "wind bag"?

gjeffers,

I noticed the huge vert stab until I looked closer at the fuse of the UCANDo .46

Really looks like a fuse length stab.
