Woohoo, is my girlfriend mad at me!!!!

-Picked up a Saito .91 from the LHS on thursday, and ordered a UCD .46 at the same time - will be here tuesday. I will pick it up along with a Futaba 9C....

HS425BBs for the ailerons, HS525BBs for the elevator halves and throttle, and a HS5625 digital for the rudder...

Guess I shoulda kept my mouth shut!!!

I can't wait!!

Fiveoboy, sounds like your set. Spend some extra time strengthening the stabs and LG oh ya get some cf push-rods and titanium ends. Let me know how the build goes. I spent some time today planning and ironing every last wrinkle. I wish someone would take a video of the .46 with a saito 100 flying or at least tell me how they were flying.

Yeah I am going to use a flying wire kit to strengthen the tail and probably fillet the joints as well. Landing gear strengthening is a given, seems like the most common problem.

I'm also going to put a cline on it and replace the CA hinges with some pinned ones.

I have talked to a couple guys with the 1.00 in it, and it's a rocket. It doesn't lack with the .91 either from what I hear...

Does ANYONE know where I can find a carbon fiber gear for this thing?

I hear that some have been replacing the tailwheel with a sullivan tail wheel. Is this the whole tailwheel assembly, or just the wheel itself??

Not really sure about the tail wheel but it seems to be adequate unless you plan on doing some harrier landings.

The LG struts do seem to be a bit flimsy so I would either try carbon fiber tape or just get some cf cloth and wrap that around the gear then dip it in some epoxy.

CA hinges are fine unless you don't do critical steps to their installation. I had them on my .91 extra and they were quite strong. Alot of people install them with their bare hands which will make them oily, some don't drill holes, or cut away covering, and many don't use super thin super high quality CA

Question about the cline, do you have or need to install a check valve to pressurize the tank? What benefits will the cline offer other than fuel siphoning?

Yes you need a checkvalve on the exhaust port. The cline comes with one but it's not that great in my opinion. I use the Fourmost checkvalve which you can get for a a few bucks at the LHS. The cline stops fuel syphoning, but it also allows for more consistant fuel delivery and better transition. The cline broadens the sweet spot of your needle ranges.

Woohoo it showed up!

I think the guy at the LHS was going to punch me, I called 4 times from 9am till 1. Did a thorough inspection - all the parts are here, no broken ribs, and only a few small wrinkles in the covering, which will iron out easily.

I also walked out with a Futaba 9C yesterday. Played with it last night - I am very suprised at how easy it is to use, even for me!! I am definitely glad I dished out the extra $ for it.

Now I just gotta make a stand, and get that Saito broken in...

Unfortunately I have to work 3:30-midnight. Looks like I'll be up all night

Don't bother with the stock tailwheel setup, I had that exact problem w/ harrier landings ripping the wire right out of the epoxied-in plastic bracket.

Do you have a link for a compatable tail gear? Maybe I could mill a piece from aluminum. hmmm...

fiveoboy01, how is the project coming together, got any sleep[sm=tongue.gif]

Hehe, 2 am and I'm still up...

Didn't start till tonight. Servos/extensions are in the wing, ailerons are on, belly pan is drying to wing right now. I've got the stab marked and the covering cut, just gotta glue it in. Same with the fin.

Just glued the canopy on my cap 232, boy I hope that canopy glue dries clear like the bottle says, or I'm gonna have one ugly canopy!!

STILL wondering if anyone makes carbon fiber gear for this thing...

I would pass on the surpass.

For nearly the same/less weight, you can put a saito .91 or 100 in it.

But what if i want to stick to the specifications? I am quite new too, so would a saito .91 or 100 not be too much? Also, what is the difference in price?

Mark,

You certainly can do whatever you want. The .70 surpass will fly the plane fine. You will have enough power to hover and pullout, but you won't have the pullout of the Saito .91 or 100. Lots of power can get you out of a bad situation if necessary. From what I've seen, the guys with the .91/100 are perfectly happy and these motors give a real reserve of extra power. As I said before, the Saito .91 has more power and weighs less than the .70 surpass, so it's a win-win situation. You just have to learn throttle management. Really the only time you need full throttle in any situation is when pulling out of a hover, or doing uplines. The UCD isn't designed for speed.

As far as price - if I remember correctly, the OS .70 surpass is 299.00 at Tower's website. My tower catalog got soaked in the rain, so I THINK that that might be the pumped version, which is around 50.00 more than the non-pumped. I am not sure if you can get it cheaper somewhere else or not. For comparison, the Saito .91 is around 220-240 at most LHS. I paid 229 for mine. I believe you can get it from cheif aircraft for about 215.

i have a saito 91 on my ucd 46. I like having the extra power for low hovering. Mine fits on the stock mount as well. I find it to be a great combination.

Hey guy's hope someone here can help me on my u can do.

At half throttle the planes wants to nose down and when i put in 1 click of up it is to much[>:]

At full throttle it want's to nose up. so i put 1 click of down and its to much[:@]

My c/g is at 4 7/8 so i think its fine according to the book ( 4 to 6 )

Do you think it has to much up-thrust on the firewall ( HANE'NT CHECKED IT YET ).

Or is it a c/g issue.

NEED SOME INPUT PLEASE.

i think it would be a thrust line thing. the cg is way nose heavy. your not sopposed to know what it dos at full throttle check the thrust i have up in the 60 and down in the 46. btw any wings blow off haven' been on here in forever

Mark,

The Saito fits the included mount fine. To get the recommended distance from the spinner backplate to the firewall, it will be almost at the very front of the mount as far as you can get it. You'll end up spreading the mount apart as much as you can get it, but the engine will fit between the beams. You will also need to use a counter-sunk machine screw for the mount at the firewall on the upper right side(viewed from the front) - the carb hits the included hex screw.

I'm not pushing you but I think you will be very happy/glad that you put the saito on there.

Know what's funny, is I haven't even maidened mine yet!!! Just going on what some experienced flyers have been telling me

Its very confusing to me at the moment, lol, still on a steep learning curve as you may have guessed, i should be able to get an engine and stuff a lot cheaper at sandown on the trade stalls, just trying to get some input before i go. But thanks again for your replies. i'll keep thinking about what to get and then see what happens at the exhibition.

I'll keep ya posted !!

i just got my ucd 46 and got a os .70 four stroke ultimate for it. i was wondering, is this a good engine for full on 3d flying? i also have hitec 645mg servos all around. will this setup be good enough? here's a picture of the engine. if you look closely you can see the pump on the back there.

Phat,

The surpass .70 will have plenty of power for 3d. Pullout out of a hover might not be as good as a .91 or 1.00 but it will still work. The .70 is also heavy, heavier than even a Saito .91 or 1.00.

Your servo choice is fine, the torque is probably overkill on the ailerons and elevators. You could have probably gotten away with some cheaper ones like 525bbs on those. The 645mg is also a bit slower than some other options(even at 6 volts) but they will still work fine.

Be sure to let us know how it goes!

the os 70 ultimate weighs less than a 46 . it has a bit more power than a satio 72 maybe 2 to 400 rpm more on 30% fuel.

Ken,you can just use a regular y connector if you want. That is what I did. Just flip one of the servo control horns around so that the pushrod is coming from the bottom side of the servo, and not the top. The servos will be moving opposite directions still, but coming from the bottom, the pushrods will still move the same. Jeff
