Fred Dings, II....... man thats a hell of tail brace!!!! Dang. Hope it works!. Have you flown this one yet? It looks to me that you have lots-O-toys in yer garage/basement. All I have is my UCD.46, Alpha 40 trainer, and a 1/4 scale Weaks special athat someone gave to me at the feild.(crashed of course but fixable) Looks like you have lots of time.

Ten percent smarter than your equipment? Your prolly right! Now if I can get thru a maiden flight, I'll be ok.

hockeyrules99......My saito 72 has alot of vibration at low idle. It does go away at around 1/4 throttle tho. Dosent bother me too much. I shrunk the covering a little more and alot of it went away.

17oz??? How funny!

ORIGINAL: runover1

ORIGINAL: predator500

^^Yes its inverted.

^Well i moved it back as far as i could and not only does it look awfuly, but it would look non existant and would act as a piece of fiberglass drag rather than a cowling....Plus i already cut it out to fit the 4.5 inch motor mount (which was done by putting the GP mount that came with the plane on 1" plywood blocks creating a space between the motor mount and firewall).

Colin C
OK Colin,
Maybe I am not getting this right, but if you already have the engine mounted at 4.5" out, why would spinning the mount 90* change the depth of the cowl. You will probably have an extra hole or two to cut into the cowl and you may need a muffler extension, but it should work. I had my OS46FX mounted at 90* on my 1st UCD3D46.

Well the way I have it cut out right now, fits the engine inverted. I was actuially going to buy a new cowl and side mount the engine but Im still looking for a 4.5 inch motor mount!!! Untill then, ill just have to wait....

Thanks for all the positive coments, guys. Now I am an expert (?) at posting pictures. Here is what I've been flying in the snow. Pontoons are better than skis in anything over a half inch of snow.

To address a couple of comments; I painted the inside of the canopy with Testor's transparent blue spray enamel, #1257. It comes in a 3 ounce spray can.

For a tail brace if you use rigid wire you only have to do top or bottom not both. It will prevent flexing in both directions. I did the top rather than the bottom because I fly off long grass at the Conestoga field. If you use flexible wire that is O.K. also but you should brace top and bottom and you don't want to circle your antenna with a closed conductive loop. According to the electronic purists that will reduce the range of your receiver antenna.

Yep, I have several flights on it, just enough to know that the O.S. .70 isn't the engine I want to use. I will use a Saito 1.00 if I can get a good one. I sent two Saito 1.00 engines back because of excessive vibration. The first one vibrated so badly that the carburetor broke off the back plate. (yeah, I balance my props and I checked the gaps) Horizon sent me another new one immediately. Same problem, but this time I could also hear a clicking. Turning the engine over slowly by hand I thought I could tell that the piston was hitting the port valve. I sent that one back also. I got a nice letter from the tech telling me that he cleaned the valves and replaced the rear bearing. I haven't had time to run it up yet. I am an O.S. man but got the Saito because it was a lightweight engine. I'm not bad mouthing Saito... I have a Saito 1.5 in my Cap 32 and a Saito .72 in my Twist and they both run trouble free. I bought these because they were recommended by Horizon as best for these planes. Here's a couple more pix.

Gary...yep hard to read. I went back to look at the files and this is what I found.
The carb broken off the backplate : 328 KB
The Ultra Stick on my flight box was 304.9 KB
The Piper float plane was 1500 KB.

I must have had my camera on high resolution for that shot.

Guess that tells us that around 300 to 500 KB would be a good size to upload.

Nice talking to you guys...happy trails.

gjeffers....well, I put on a few decals this after noon. I just had to do what you did. 3D upsidedown.... I like that, makes it look good. Hope you don't mind I do it also. Plus, I put on some other decals to give it a little spice.

Anyone seen a S.S. Chevrolet U-Can-Do-3D??? I bet this is the only one like it! Tell me what you think?

P.S......notice anything a little different....other than the chevy stuff?

Joe

GUYS- I have seen a UCD 46 with a OS 91 and a 14X4W APC, fly and the performance was just unbelieveable !!! The vertical pull-out from a hover was unlimited.

I'm putting together another UCD (After totaling mine last weekend), and just got a OS 91 motor for it. Should have it flying by the weekend.

I'll keep you posted.....

That's going to be a horse... My UCD 46 with a Saito 91 is like a rocketship out of hover... I thought about trying one with an OS 91FX, or the new TigerShark 91 (a little lighter than the OS).

Perk keep us posted.

If the rain holds off this weekend, I will try to shoot some video of the 3 UCD 46's at our field... 1 with a Saito 82 (IMO, the best flying one), and 2 with Saito 91's... We haven't experienced the landing gear problems... I did add some tri-stock before mounting the tank... (add put some extra ZAP in the area).

adde687...don't go with a .70 anything would be my opinion. Saito .91 or O.S. .91 even Saito 1.00. The Saitos tend to be a little lighter than the O.S., but that has never been a concern to me. A .70 is a good choice for my light weight Twist but not for a heavier, thick winged UCD .46.

kokamo...really nice job... I see you put a bust of yourself in the pilot's seat. It looks like a professionally sponsored air show plane. You might want to keep an eye on your long needle shaft, sometimes it gets to vibrating really bad with a 4 cycle and can mess up your threads.

perkinsm...right on with the O.S. .91, but a 14x6 is a better choice according to our local club tail touching expert who flies with an O.S. .91. Let me know what you think if you try it.

Today is a great flying day here in PA. I'm going to give my Twist some fresh air.

Regards, FRED

Looks good Gary. It's neat that you and your son can get together and fly. I never had any kids and my wifes kids aren't into flying. Oh well............. I went to fly this afternoon and forgot to bring my wing. ARRGGHHH! Too late to go back and get it. [:@] First chance in about a week and a half (due to rain) and I forgot the wing. [:@]

dont feel like the lone ranger ceegee, i went (6miles) to fly one day and got there and pulled out everything and went to get my transmitter and guess what? i went all the way back home and retrieved it and got back to the strip and went to fuel and guess what? went back home and got my fuel and finally got to fly. and to this day i havent got in a hurry to leave again

I gave my youngest son (28) my h9 arrow for his birthday and he was hooked! and i gave my oldest a h9 arrow (new) for christmas and he likes flying but dosent get as much time off as he would like, both boys(men) live in vegas and havent got their ama cards yet so they drive 200 miles to come to Trona to fly with me (their trainer) and it is great.

FRED - I was planning on getting a 14X6. I saw where someone else recommended it too. I'll let you know. Any idea what the guy in your club runs as far as fuel in his OS 91? I'm planning on breaking it in on 10%, since I have 4 Gallons to use up, then fly on 15% once it's broken in.

GJEFFERS - Nice looking plane. Thats great that your sons have the time to fly with you.

BTW - I have done the "Went flying thing and left stuff at home" too. [:'(]

Yeah, I got to the field and walked out and one of the guys said "what'd you forget?" I told him and he and the others chimed in with all the different stories of stuff they have forgotten. Just not my day to fly. It's driving me nuts though...... it's been too long. I got a Twist in the mail yesterday though so I have a new plane to start on. Yippie

perkinsm...Dave Quatse, our local 3D Ace uses S&W 10% fuel and a 14x6 prop. This guy is good and he will tell you he went through 5 planes until he could tail touch. He also has a gyro on the rudder.
He started out with a .46 engine and finally found that with the O.S. .91 he was pulling out of a hover with authority.

CeeGee...you'll really like your Twist. It's light, cheap and easy to transport. I have over two hundred flights on mine. I put 11 flights on it today. I make 7 minute flights.
Around 40 or so flights you'll find the wing mounting dowel is being seriously abraded by the former that it plugs into. I put a brass tube over my dowel when I saw that and drilled out the former to accept it.

Yeah, I know guys, this is a UCD .46 thread. G'bye

Gary... I found them. They're made by Sullivan. www.sullivanproducts.com
They are called "Attachment straps" pkg of 8 Number S547

Go to the website and find them under "Product Index" then click on "Flying Wires and Tail Braces".
