Anyways ......just got back dived into the Big Box ... ...available on both our continents ...picture streight out the box..... got to rush she's on final approach from work...[:@]

Joe, Thanks for the tips specially on the fueling. The Cline wasn't in the mail I'm beginning to wonder how long the mail takes it was shipped last Wednesday.

Wise guy from England AKA David, like I said no sunshine for over 8 days here and constant rain. The storm that is now a Cat 2 Hurricane formed off our east coast last week and is still bothering our weather[]. Hopefully the forecast calls for better conditions for the weekend.
O.K. give it up!! Looks like one half of an Edge 540 wing to me.

David, On second thought could that be half of the Yak wing Joe mentioned?? C'mon give it up your killing me with this suspense.

Joe, As this engine is new I will probably run a few tanks through her on the ground. I'm thinking about bypassing the regulator until I can get a couple of good runs with the high speed needle about 1 1/2 turns out. I really want to get the low speed needle setting and transitions right and then plug the regulator in and go for it. Do you remember what your low speed setting wound up being?? I would also be interested in what the tach readings were for the 15 X 6 and 15 X 4 APC'S. I just set my friends Saito .91 last week and we are at 1 1/2 turns out on the high speed and I had to crank the low speed in about 2 turns. The .91 idles and transitions nicely now with about an hour of total run time.

Brian, by all means, get the S 100 dialed in before you add the Cline. Put 1 or 2 tanks in it before you adjust the low end to ensure that it is seated. Once warm, start to turn it in a little at a time. The general procedure is, adjust it in 1/8 increments, start and check. Repeat untill transition is satisfactory. If on a bench, with the plane secured, in the past I have set it with it running. Once your close to idle, turn it in when running untill you hear the idle raise and smooth out. This method is more dangerous and is not for everyone. If you choose the recommended procedure, its merely a process requireing a little patience and persistance, but well worth the time. Once you get your first gallon run through, it is time to set the rocker clearance. We could talk about that later. Joe

Joe, Your recommendation is how I tune also. This is my second Saito my first was an FA 120 on a Four Star. I know how to adjust the valves so that should not be a problem. I am glad that we both use the same procedure. The tach readings would help so I know where to go after the regulator gets plugged in.

David, Give It Up!! I can't guess on the manufacturer as I don't recognize the color scheme. If you decide to come to the U.S. for Roger's contest, make sure I know. It is a reasonable drive for me as long as a place to stay over can be found. Maybe Roger could help us with that. I'll bring my Dynaflite Decathlon gasser for that one.

Stoney, if you, or any of the gang needs a place to stay, my house is open. We would have a good time talking airplanes till the wee hours. It would be a hoot. Come on over, up around or how ever you can get here.

Dave, wifey is on the look-out for who's stealing the linens. Lord help you if you get any grease on them. The gold cord adds a nice touch and the flowers, oh the flowers..... See, you don't have to use a scantly clothed model to make an impact.

My 91 Surpass-1 in the UCD is experiencing a power loss..... Arrgh! new glow plug, new fuel, adjusted the valves, and checked fuel lines. Get 9000 rpm's max with a 14X6 prop. Run it up and then the power noticeably falls off. No longer getting unlimited vertical. I do seem to have alot of black oil residue in the exhaust - hm..... Turn the needle valve and it dies, but it won't come up to the same power level as before. One guy told me he thought there might be a carbon build-up and to cook the engine in antifreeze in a crock-pot. Jeez, I seem to be spending too much time in the oven removing bearings and now cooking engines in a crock-pot. I should take up cooking as a hobby. Any thoughts on this problem? I can hear it already - get a YS 110.

Yeah Dave, and you guys don't forget my 91 Surpass questions. No thoughts as to what could be causing the power loss?

New fuel - 15 % Castor blend, and new glow plug. Flushed carb with the needle valve removed. Checked fuel lines no signs of air bubbles or restrictions. Fuel valve is not leaking. Adjusted valves. Hole in the bottom of the crankcase is clear as is the line to the exhaust. Hm..... any other possibilities?

Debri in pump? Leak in pump gasket or loose screws on housing? I don't check fuel lines, replace on a regular maintenance schedule. With a carb flush, I blow all out with compressed air. Check crank for play. Any play negates valve adjustment. All bolts on head and mill tight? Or any other screws for that matter.

Here is another one that I have read of and experienced myself. Also it took quite some time to resolve it. With the increased fuel demand in the summer months, some fuel manufacturers have been getting sloppy and small particles, as well as shavings of plastic have been showing up in fuel jugs. Its the same plastic of which the jug is made. Symptoms as you have described, yet no way of finding the cause of the engine fatigue. Finally found the problem, when filling, the fuel line would blow off from pressure built up due to the restriction. The particals and shaveings were everywhere. In the tank, regulator, tees, lines, needle passages. Now I transfer jugs and screen the fuel as it pours to another jug. Filtered clunk in fuel jug, filter on fill line, filter on fuel line in plane and finally filtered clunk in fuel tank on plane. Good luck. Joe

Joe, O.K. Smarty so you are going to play David's game too huh?? Does it sound like I'm getting back to myself with the wisecracks?? Is this the Yak you have been talking about?? With not much to look at it's quite hard to play this guessing game.

Roger, Please PM me with the dates of your club's gathering. Wifey gave me the go ahead to attend if there are no more disasters here. Your offer is very kind, but I wouldn't want to intrude on your family life. Motel information in the area would be helpful although I would like to keep my equipment in your care instead of the truck.

If anyone is interested in my club's website try a search under rseahawks.org. I don't have the specific web address handy. B....

David,

I had nothing to do with any of that!! Matter of fact I just got the e-mail newsletter today and looked at the website myself. I heard something about a B-52 and a story someone was doing. If you e-mail John Agnew he should be able to give you some information on the what's up with that! I didn't mean to get anyone's hackles up, just thought you guys might like to see where I fly. It's 15 minutes from my house. Be nice though if you e-mail John, he's a nice guy.

Cline regulator just came so I got some plumbing and cowl cutting to do. B...

David, O.K. then sorry, you sounded very upset[:@]. I wonder where Roger has been. I would really like to see you come to the U.S. for the gathering. Perhaps we can shame Joe into joining us. Sounds like a party and some debauchery to me!! Got the cowling and plumbing done just have some finishing touches left now.

Joe, I'm being told not to fly this thing until I pin the nylon hinges with toothpicks. Have you done that?? Seems the way your wringing yours out if you didn't, mine should hold up. Both the parcels that we spoke about arrived this afternoon. Now we'll have David guessing!!

Brian, the pinned hinges are applied with epoxy. One good thing about the CA hinges supplied by GP is that when cut, they make nice applicators for the epoxy. I used them to stuff the epoxy into the slots to make sure that it was well in. I did not secure the hing tabs with pins or toothpicks if that is what you mean and they have been truly tested. I used 30 minute epoxy as it left ample time to install and position correctly. Zero resistance on the swing and resulted in perfect hing line gaps. Less resistance from the hinge means more torque goes into moving the control surface.

Training tonight was very interesting, gusting, gale force winds with a little shear factor mixed in. The wind sock didn't know which way to turn. Everybody got their flights in and all planes made it home, but it was not fun. The UCD never left the transport. Later, Joe

...Now then......been giving this some Serious thought ......The girlies ( Mom & Rebecca )have been making little squeaks about going to Vienna or someplace for someones "surprise" 40th birthday party in February, so .., with the odd grumble about " Bit of a trip for a party.." i'v actually been quite positive about thier trip..y'know .." Providing you send us a postcard..." type of stuff... Then quietly started looking at "The boys trip out.."

The winter project would be building the airplane to take with us ..( one reason i've just embarked on this mid summer project....by Christmas we'el be ready for the next big build )
...so the next big question is What airplane ..?.. got to have plug in, 2 piece wings ....be over 80" w/span, detachable tail feathers & u/c ...fit in a suitcase..

Sugestions ?.....we have been looking roud for a couple of weeks now but nothing has leapt out and bit us on the bum... so, Any ideas..

Joe, Thanks that is exactly how I installed mine with the exception of using a piece of thin plastic to spread the epoxy inside instead of the CA hinge material. I also brushed epoxy on both sides of each hinge before installing them in the slot. I think I'm just going to run her and skip the extra work unless I see or feel one start working out. The Cline came yesterday so just canopy installation and balancing left to do. Should have that done today and then if it will just stop raining and blowing around here.

David, In all reality it would probably be too much to bring all that stuff over here on a commercial flight. Unless you want to come on the Queen Mary why don't you just consider bringing yourself. Ya can fly my Decathlon.
