Its been a while. This thread was buried as usual. Weather has been keeping all our guys grounded. We did secure a dome for some winter flying with E-Power. No winds, under lights in a tee shirt. I'm likeing that. Finally got around to putting a muffler on the UCD to appease the noise police at the field. Was able to rig the stock muff to the 'Hatori' header. Best part about it is that it keeps the goo off the plane where its located. Later boys, Joe

Hey!!
Glad to hear you are still around. Question is, where is everyone else?? Had a slight setback on our home. Ripped the last ceiling down in the guest bedroom and had some mold. Well maybe not by Thanksgiving, but certainly by Christmas. I'm starting to wonder if I'll even get a chance to fly my trainer

Matt,
Your letter arrived, Thank you.
Joe,
Hope the weather is not bummung you out too much. My mother in law advised that they got lake effect snow yesterday in upstate N.Y.
To All,
Beautiful weather here now but windy. As soon as we can finish our home I'll be flying if I can remember how. Has anyone heard from Roger?? I think that Ivan got him!! Here's a pic of the last room that needs to be rebuilt, hopefully finished by Thanksgiving. Brian....

...Christmas only 6 weeks away...dont quite believe it [:-]...hope everyones Okey -Dokey...where is Roger...Hawaii or someplace no doubt..
That time of year now when its dark in the mornings ...dim all day and even darker at night..the weather seems always to be foggy, cold & misty, the streets are lined with birds... walking
..Those dazzling, vivid days of summer seem a million miles behind us..
Right ...now cheer up.
...finished the lovely Kyosho J-3 Cub off, it was Roger who set me off on that one ....wonder how he's getting on with his ...
Pressing on with the "Rare Bear"...weight and balance issiues dominated this build..certanly not a begineres kit, but i've really enjoyed it...Gone to plan "B" on the retracts...Robart airs...smooth little devils they are too...just meant pruning another 400($) leaves of the money tree...gulp[:-]...still if your going on the Titanic may as well go first class eh..?
O.S .91FX raised to the Helli "C" spec at the front, though in all fairnes and about time you may well say,
i went out cash in hand to get a 1.10YS...it would have been ideal....couldnt get one ...all that was on offer were engines returned to the store by folks who couldnt get the things to run right...no garuantee was on offer ...nothing..so i'll have to wait a little longer i guess.
Had a big clear out at the Autum "Swapmeet"...sold both this summers trainers while they where worth a fair bit, plus loads of other unused parafinallia....raised us $700 ....so bought Peter a Thunder Tiger "Trainer MK II" + new .46LA for next year..another fine TT ARTF
....cant fault them. Grabbed a new Futaba 7C while they were on special too.
Few picies for ya
...were planning a "Christmas Day" fly in at the field....Dare i...?...[:@]
Oh
...forgot to mention this ....Peter gets me to order a "Rear Bare" Tee shirt from the RB racing team...I muff the order up...[:@]....I get an E-Mail from Sharon Coates ...would i like to re order ? & Peter might be better with a larger size ....O.K...i Do...
We then got a signed, by the Pilot & owner, photo of RB.....no charge ...gratis..not even shipping...just a straight $20 for the tee shirt...Were off to Reno next fall i think..

David,
Glad your back online my friend. Sounds like you have been busy. Rear Bear looks striking!! Should have let me know on the YS 110 got one sitting here that will probably be out of warranty before I get a chance to fuel her up. Worried about Roger though, think I'll scat and drop him an e-mail. Sometimes these PM'S don't seem to work real well.

David, looks like its Christmas every day at your place. Again, everything sparkles. Good stuff.
Stoney, you got that weather report right. Monday night we enjoyed our first foray to the dome for some indoor E-flight. On leaving, we found 'white out' conditions. FWD engaged, 10 MPH on the interstate. Couldn't see the hood of the vehicle. Actually the drive home was about the same as our indoor fly in for me. Edgy and impatient is how I spent my entire evening!!!!!!! Some how they booked the dome with a soccer game in our time slot. We waited about an hour for the field. That done, its air time. There was an abundance of carnage in the air, considering the first time experience in a restricted air space. My flight was good......for about five minutes. I caught a wheel in some netting on the interior of the dome and there it hung for the rest of the evening, fourty foot in the air. I don't want to talk about getting it down, my shrink wants me to block it out. Later, Joe

Hello gents
Long time no chat
I flew the UCANDO last week aster a long time, wind has become obnoxious here the past 30 days so it finally broke and we got some flying in. I must admit I am getting bored with the UCANDO. I dont like the fact that it takes alot of setup to get it to knife edge decently. It cant harrier without mixing and even then its only fair. Its a fun plane to toss around but I feel this winter I might be pulling the guts out of it and moving onto something thats a bit more inline with what I consider to be 3D. It has served me great all year, it has taken a licking but it keeps on ticking but I feel it is almost time for it.
I have eyed the H9 Funtana or the EF Yak but price might be prohibitive, we will see.
Anyone else flying there UCANDO lately?
matt

Had mine out the week before last. I hear you on the wind issue. It won't let up. My experiences with KE is sweet. Low, slow passes @ high alpha. With the help of some elevator slaved to the rudder of course. Ditto on the harrier, its a lot of work to get a half decent one. Their not pretty. As much as I want a gasser, I think I see electric in my future. They are putting E-power in some very large planes and it seems to be only the beginning. Plug and play. No mess, no fuss and no dead sticks!! Joe

Its still a blur as I am slipping in and out of sub conscious visions, it could be the medications to suppress the images. Long story short, about as short as the ladder supplied by the owner of the dome. As he teetered on top of the 15 foot step ladder with about 20 feet of pipe, pokeing and prodding, I stood below, transmitter in hand, waiting to fly away when freed. No go, stuck fast. Now with a TX strap taped to the end of the pole and securely wound around one wheel, he pulled and pushed with the now arced pole, stressed as if there was a 100 pound marlin on the other end. Finally it let go. With only a grasp on the end of the pole, teetering on the top step of the ladder, the weight of the pole proved to much to bear and it all came tumbling down. Now , with an arena of the dimensions 400 X 600 feet, where do suppose the pipe landed? On the plane. I need another pill. Joe

...Great respect Joe, Classic
, i thought only that sort of disaster could happen to me...side splitting stuff. My two. [:@]..The photo is just a visual aid. During the "Clear up & collection" of all the gear for the "Swapmeet sale" we had wings etc all over the place, Little Mr helper had spotted a new, unused big prop at the back of the top shelf & decide it could go too..i was'nt listening...i'd emptied the wing bags of their contents ready to put the "For sale" wings into, so wings were all over the floor....Crash...Bang[:@] ..he'd slipped whilst Standing on the chair...The prop pierced the UCD wing and embedded into a Knot hole in the Tongue & Groove flooring...solid.... "Sword in the stone" like [:-]...it took two hours of careful wriggling to extract Excalibur[:-]
I epoxied the three ply plates together to make the RB Firewall, glue had squidged out the edges and i' set about trimming the semi-set epoxy off....brand new scalpel blade ....yep you got it ..[:@]....middle finger ...two inch gash, 3/8" deep.
I had always been a bit keen on first aid kits.... so we had one on each of the three floors of the house....with my tee shirt round my finger i soon found out not one had any plasters in, bandages or suchlike.....I just managed to escape Hospital & stitches using small eyepads and masking tape.
Two days later, in Rebecca's room i found a wardrobe full of Teddy's, Horses, Giraffes, etc all covered in huge plasters & bandages [:@]

David and Joe,
Geez to both of you, and I thought we had all of the bad luck!! Airplane in the rafters, Prop through a wing and floor and a gash though a finger. I'll vbet we could have alot of fun together over a few beers with a valium or two tossed in.
New roof has a leak at the ridge, caused the mold problem in the guest bedroom. Roofing contractor was here yesterday and they are supposed to "call when they can fit us in". Imagine that for customer service. The saga continues. Brian....

I just got to the end of this thread, and now you are saying that you are getting board with this aircraft. If you had started the thread with this it would have saved me a lot of reading.[&o]
Never the less I have question for you who have flown both the UCD 40 and 60. I’m normally flying helicopters but since I newer hover those I have decided that I need an aircraft that I can hover with. The UCD I just going to be something to play around with, the helicopters are prio 1, so I don’t intend to put a lot of money in to it. That means that a 4 stoker is out of the question for me, I’m just gonna get a cheap engine. The question is what will be the best, a UCD 40 with a J’EN 56 (Just Engines) with a pipe or a UCD 60 with an ASP 91?
And what prop do you suggest for these engines?
Also to keep it simple I’m gonna use same fuel as I do for the helis, that is 15 synthetic oil and 15 nitro.
Getting bored with the UCD, damn it.

Tompa,
Methinks that you just read Matt's (Diablo Kid) comments?? If you really have read much of the thread you would have picked up on a lot of tips on building and flying these models. There have been many photos of modifications that have been made by Joe, David and Roger that helped me build my first UCD. I lost part of my home to Hurricane Charley and my UCD to Hurricane Jeanne. The other guys have been somewhat affected by the storms as well except for David in the UK, be he has some other issues. All have been busy with their jobs and of course other projects. We have lately, I'm afraid drifted away from the issue of the UCD on the thread. Strange as it may seem with everyone's problems we have all remained friends and have used this very medium to communuicate. I can't really help you with your question as mine had a Saito four stroke. Joe used the same engine and later changed to a YS 110FZ for more power. Roger used an OS .91 four stroke as did David with the exception of David's being pumped. Stick around and I am sure that someone will answer your question for you. From what I understand, you really have to wind the two strokes up to get them to hover for very long at all and then they have a difficult time pulling out. A fellow at my club had one with an OS 91 FX and from what I observed, that seemed to be the case. On the other hand, he was not the best pilot in the world either. I can assure you that we all think alot of this airframe and will probably always have one. Later this fall I hope to have the time to get to it with #2 and if I'm not mistaken I think Joe is on #4 right now.

... A Big UCD with any engine would be better than not having a UCD at all...Upgrade later...head for the Big Blue.
Was there some mention of a 1.20 size UCD earlier this year..The name "O.S Master" springs back to mind ....Joe...?...Remember..?

Actually the 120 was a gasser, quite a monster in its own right. Tompa, I have been flying the .60 since its inception. Wasn't on the shelf two minutes. Two years later, I'm on my fourth. Just got back from the field this minute and the grin on my face is still as large as the first flight. For me the .60 is a keeper, its not perfect, but so few are. Also, this evening, we maidened a .46 UCD with a Saito 82-4 banger. Boys, turns out that the horizontal stab sits much lower on the tail than the .60 resulting in zero dive to the wheels when rudder is applied. Got too dark to really put it through its paces but proved to be very good in the way it handles. Floats just like big brother. As far as motors go, I know economics plays a vital role in modeling. A two stroke will fly it, but only a four stroke will do it justice. This plane is not a fast flyer and depends on the low end power and the ability to spin a large prop. I started with a more economical Saito 100 4 stroke and it flew great and I learned a lot of different 3D stuff. It wasn't until I put on a larger 4 stroke, that I realized just how much I was missing. Don't get me wrong, I don't run right out and buy all kinds of stuff on the market, but the smaller engine didn't save me anything as it was canceled out in replacement. Budget wise I think that you will really enjoy the .46 UCD. 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke all depends on how serious you are about 3D. Good economics starts with the right choice, the first time. Personally, I would wait and save for a 4 stroke. Good luck in your decision and welcome, Joe

Thanks for your fast answers. Stoney, sorry to hear about the hurricane. I was in the states when Hugo passed by. I think it was 1988 or 89. Before Hugo I was staying half a year in SC, but at the time it hit I had moved up to Kansas. Shortly after I visited some friends at Hilton Head just on the coast at SC, and saw the devastation.
I think you all are taking me a bit to serious. The comments about you getting board was just my initial ironic thoughts, after reading 40 pages. After all this posts I can see your devotion the UCD. I have already made up my mind about getting a UCD.
And I hear you all saying that it needs a 4 stroker to do real 3D. I might aspire on flying my helis somewhat 3Dish, but when it comes to aircraft I haven’t hardly flown them at all. So I cant fly them 3D anyway. It might be wrong to say that I intend to hover, but that’s the kind of flying style that appeals to me. Maybe I should say that I gonna use the UCD as a relaxed funfly instead. (To hover an aircraft is a bit down the road for me, I think)
A Saito 100 would cost me roughly 270 UDS more than a ASP91, and that is a bit to much extra for a something I’m gonna use as a “toy” when relaxing from the heli flights. (aUCD60 with an ASP91 is only 400 USD, A Saito 100 would increase the budget with 65%)
Another question, since I’m living on an island we often have windy conditions. Is the UCD 40a lot more wind sensitive compared to the 60? I’m asking since I like the J’EN 56 engine and would like to own one.

Another question, since I’m living on an island we often have windy conditions. Is the UCD 40a lot more wind sensitive compared to the 60? I’m asking since I like the J’EN 56 engine and would like to own one.

Tompa,
The engine question is all relative. Joe would be the best one to answer your question on the .46,vs the 60., as he just got done flying a .46 and he has considerable experience with the .60. Why can't you purchase an engine elsewhere?? I don't know what the duty is, but I just sold a new Supertigre .75 to a fellow in Australia for $92.00 and the shipping US Postal 3-5 day express was $26.00 US. You will find out in the long run that it is better to purchase the right engine the first time than to be unhappy with the performace and have to change anyways. Joe had a Saito 100 ($279.00) and found that it did not have quite enough power for his flying style. He wound up buying and being very satisfied with the YS 110FZ ($340). Based upon his comments in the thread, I purchased one also. I've got no plane to fly right now except for my trainer, but I have a brand new Saito 100 and the YS 110. As I have said before I hope I get to do something with them before they go out of warranty!! It would be nice to know that you have enough there to get the job done as your flying skills get better don't you think?? I would also think that the way prices are there that the resale value on unused or low time engines would be very good. Just something to think about.

on a side note please rememeber if you go the YS route that YS engines are almost impossible to get right now. I have searched for a YS 1.10 for the past 2 months and cant find one used even!
The Saito is nice becuase the availability, price and the fact you can take it out once your done with the airplane and transplant it into just about any 60 sized airplane and have enough power.
I will admit that I feel the Saito 100 is not enough power for my liking. I would love to try the YS 1.10. When I first starting flying it it was great but after some time on the it I feel I could use more. Now I see why one our club guys put a Saito 180 in his UCANDO!!!

Hi Guys,
Guess Matt had the last posting on the 12th, so that's only about ten days ago. I hope everyone is well and just busy. I know that David
has abandoned us pretty much for the Rear Bear thread. As I have been working so hard here and we are not still done, wifey bought me a H-9 P-51 Miss America Mustang as an early Christmas gift. The only catch is I can't start puttting it together until our house is finished. Check in guys and Happy Thanksgiving to all. Brian...

David,
Glad everything is well in the UK. How about some flight reports on both the UCD and Cyclone and how to they compare?? Bring that Rare Bear over here, bet I smoke you with Miss. Armerica. I'll stick the YS 110 in the nose just for you
!! Happy Thanksgiving.
