With the throw's set to 140% (high rate) the control surface's on my 3D look like barn door's swinging in the wind and the factory ca hinge's are still fine after a year and a half, not saying that they won't fail someday ....I fly it very hard ,Iv'e had the canopy crack from the fuse flexing ,and the hinge's are still there...JW

Still here. I'm about 80% on the current UCD but just can't get back to it. Between work and flying the past week, well you know how it goes. This is the first flyable weather since early December and I took advantage of every day to shake off the cobwebs. Joe

If nothing has changed.........then I want one before they are all gone. This is too good to be true, no improvements. I hope they at least raised the price. Joe

Ken, I've always wanted to go to a large gathering like Toledo. Being self employed makes it tough. Too bad there wasn't something a little more centrally located in the north east so everybody in this area had a place to go and shake the coal dust off our boots and mingle. Joe
P.S. I'm just north of Scranton so I'd be looking at about 7 hrs. (?)

Just back from the dash/instrument panel I cut a hatch the width of the fuse (Square),If you cut the monocoat in a H pattern you can tape them out of you'r way,and replace it after you'r done ..The hatch make's the beef up easy......It's a tight fit ,but it beat's doing it blind, and placing the epoxy, and block's, where you want them was allot easier.....JW

I sure hope you guys have better weather than we have been having for the last four days. Front finally came in last night. What a blow. 20+ winds and today 15-20 - same for tomorrow. I'm looking for the lamb of March anytime. It can go out anytime it's ready. What a wet, windy cold winter. Lord, nice Mustang picture. Hope you were able to fly in your corner of the world. Jeff, any pics of the new UCD?

Here is a little insight on the innards. One pic shows the application of the gear mount block from the outside and the other is what you would see if you could stick your head into the hole on the firewall. You can see one of the pins that go through the former, through the block itself and finally through an 1/8" X 1" X 2 3/4" beam (missing from the pic). One piece of tri stock from block to inside of former. Now these parts are epoxied together so I don't think it would benefit from re-doing the joints with CA, stick with epoxy. I personally think the engineering is fine, as a matter of fact, I wish just the block would pop out without damaging the former. Perhaps two pieces of tri stock vertically where the former meets the fuse sides. Any attempts to make the block permanent would require the re fitting of 1/4" tee nuts and 1/4" nylon bolts, something has to give. With normal landings the gear was never a problem, and our grass field is a little chunky. Joe

THERE ARE FOUR U CAN DO'S IN MY CLUB AND ALL OF US HAVE TO PUT THE PLANE ON A STAND UPSIDEDOWN TO START THEM. PLEASE HELP. THERE IS BOUND TO BE AN EASY WAY TO REMEDY THIS. ALL FOUR ENGINES ARE OS 91'S. THE CARB IS BELOW THE CENTER OF THE TANK SO FUEL SIPHONS INTO THE CARB AND FLOODS IT. ANOTHER OF THE U CAN DO OWNERS SPENT $60 FOR A CLINE REGULATOR BUT I THINK THERE IS AN EASIER AND CHEEPER WAY. ANY INFO APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "BEAR"

Onebear, I'm running a Saito 100, inverted. After fueling I open the throttle and spin the prop several times before starting up. If any fuel is in there that takes care of it. No kick back or spun props. Good luck, Joe

You can close the needle valve turn the engine over then re-open the needle and away ya go,...I had a os 91fs in mine at first and never had it flood ,not ever.....JW

Onebear - Maybe I'm just lucky with my Os 91 Surpass. It's one of the original versions. I have a remote glow, which makes it easier to start by having it mounted on the side of the fuse and sticking out of the cowling. Mine starts very easily and runs well inverted. No problems at all and no pumps or regulators. I used a Sullivan 13 oz tank and didn't do anything special in mounting it. Just slid into the space provided. IMHO getting the low and hi end needles set right is the answer to performance issues. Another member has one of the newer versions of this engine and likewise has no issues with his as well. He also has a remote glow, which only helps in the starting process, by not having to deal with a glow starter from beneath the plane. One other thing that may help. I use a fuel valve, which may help to avoid the fuel siphoning issue.

Roger, was up with that big ol' aluminum motor mount? There is about a 2 oz. difference with the supplied composite one. Also with the composite you can drill and tap the mount for the engine screws eliminating the nuts and washers. And........ it was nice to dremmel the holes where it mounts to the fuse to move the mount further to the side of the fuse to center the spinner due to right thrust. I do like the remote glow, they basically eliminate flame out at low throttle settings, but I won't give in to the weight penalty. Joe
P.S. I noticed that you siliconed where the stopper exits the firewall. A friend of mine did that on a stick and the weight of th fuel pulled the tank away from the stopper. The plane didn't fly too well with all the fuel in the tail, then he crashed.

Jeff, I don't like the adjustable mounts and never use them. Just my preference. They can be a bugger to adjust and get good and tight. I find they can have a good bit of slop that can allow the engine to get into the cowling. I know for sure this won't happen with this mount. As for the silicone, well, I have a hardwood strip on the back of the tank to keep it in place so it won't pull back. I also have wrapped in foam so it's secured. The benefit of the silicone is to keep exhaust residue from getting inside the airplane and weakening the wood and glue joints. I do this on all my airplanes. As for weight, I weigh in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. so I am a bit heavier than most. There are trade-offs, I admit, but honestly, as I have said previously, now that the engine is broken in I have unlimited vertical. Airplane is very stable and flies very well for my flying style with over 40 flights so far.
Sunday, winds are brisk at 15-20 MPH. Had two planes go in at the field yesterday due to winds. Bad cross wind out of the west put one in the fence and then a Cessna Skymaster push/pull twin had the wings collapse. Ugly crash. I stayed grounded another day and then today as well.

I personally don't use alum motor mount's ,I like the adjustable mount's ,Iv'e used both in the past and found that the nylon ones are cheaper and fit allot more engine's there are trade-off's to both ,So I must say to each there own....I fuel proof the tank area and the radio bay with thinned epoxy ,so fuel isn't a problem, I have to use thick foam on the tank because the YS pump pressurize's the tank and expand's it ,the factory one burst, so I also use a seamless tank, this is a must with the YS ....I'm sure if we were all sitting around a table building a UCD3D it would be the best flying one ever....lol...JW ....Roger ,The field I fly at has cross wind's all the time,so i know what ya mean , I have landed plane's crabbing @ 40-45 deg before, 15deg is common....Once I flew in wind that was so strong that you had to hold the plane with my leg's,run it up and step aside ,insta up ,at 1/2 throttle it would stay in one place about 20' above you,on landing I turned the plane down wind and it was at the end of the field in about 2 second's ,then I turned it into the wind ,it took full power to get it back to the runway ,I got it over head and set it down like a heli, to hold it in place on the ground I had to hold 1/3rd throttle and step around the fuse, clamping it with my leg's.....that was one winddddy day.......JW
