JW - doing 3 maiden flights in one day? Have fun and let us know out it went. Winds here 15-20, but warm. RCU, and maintenance day. Have to do it sometime..........

Joe, LMAO!!! I couldn't have said it better. Lord L, you are becoming too domesticated. Arrgh!! I hate drapes, blinds, curtain rods and anything associated with them. I don't think there is anything I dislike doing more around the house. Nothing causes more discord than when my wife and I try to do this together. Totally dysfunctional task. I would rather go to the dentist.

Lord L, why are you fooling around with a 40 sized UCD when you have the 60? I would think the 40 would quickly become a dust collector once you have the 60 flying.

Dave, we all walk a treacherous path, one wrong step and you may find yourself spiraling downward to a desolate existance of interior design. Its a constant vigile modelers must keep. Be strong. Joe

All three planes came home in one piece, it was gusty crosswinds and the field has melted to a sheet of ice with bumps and ruts, and the snow burms have become one foot tall jagged teeth waiting to eat your airplane if you dont land spot on... The supersportster flew the best and only took one click up and two clicks left to trim.. The majestic took two clicks up and three clicks right to trim, and the cap232 took two clicks left and three clicks up to trim... Out of all three, the sportster flew the best and the cap flew the worst (squirrelly) I had the throws set way too hot, after I reset them to a lower throw, it flew okay.... I love computer radios. .... Sadly the 3D suffered damage, I broke a prop, but when your spinning a 16X6 there isnt much ground clearance..LOL.... "Thats my story and Im stickin to it" Actually, it was floating into a perfect landing right before touchdown I pulled up too much and it dropped hard from about 3 feet, spreading the landing gear like spaghetti legs, striking the prop on the ice and breaking both tips..[sm=thumbdown.gif] But the ice suffered just as much, there was 3 one inch deep large chop marks from the torque of the YS. Everything seems to be okay with the plane, but I need to check it out before I fly again[:-] All and All, it was a fun day........Oya here's some pic's.... JW

JW - Wow! What a beautiful backdrop for photographs. And I thought Alabama had been cold. Congrats on three successful maiden flights. Great photos. It's really fun seeing pictures of where people fly and what their planes look like. I really enjoy this part of the hobby. Did you paint the canopy or did it come tinted? Good job if you did this yourself.

I recently picked up Adobe Photoshop Elements with a new camera I purchased. I am still getting the hang of the software. I thought I would experiment a little and see what it would do with a photo off the net. I really liked this one the best from the ones you provided. It obviously was a dark and cloudy day for photographs. I thought you might like this. Hope you didn't mind me using one of your photos for this experiment. I was so pleased with the end results that I wanted you to see it. This took about three minutes to do.

Thank's , I tinted them myself ...I used Pactra racing finish window tint, just make sure your canopy is very clean....(Back drop)Alaska is a very rugged and beautiful state, If you like the outdoor's this is the place to be ...There are some place's that I think I would like to live but, every time I visit the lower 48 the jet can't fly back up here fast enough for me....LOL... (Maiden) I got lucky, but I'd rather be lucky then good anytime,..LOL... they all flew good and with some tweecking they will be allot of fun this summer... (Pic's)I also like to see picture's that people post, it's a great to see differant trim scheme's and set up's ....I started flying in 1981 and had some great friend's in the hobby, then I got out of it , Now I'm back into it and having the time of my life....Thank's to ARF's and the Great people like you ,Joe ,Dave and alot of other fine people on this site and in the hobby.......Thank's again....JW

Update on my UCANDO:

I got the plane done and am taking it apart!! After reading several threads with people having issues with GP CS hinges I have decided to re-do the entire plane with Radio South CA hinges. Wont take too long so im not worried. Im gonna take the Saito 100 I have on it and re-mount it with a different motor mount. Dont like the current one so im gonna swap it out. Im gonna change all the contrrol rods with carbon or similar from H9.

I dont want to take any chances so im gonna make sure its done right before. I plan on flying this things wings off!! If im gonna punish it, then I should make sure EVERYTHING is up to spec [8D]

Matt, I never lost a stock hinge. Outof curiosity I tried the pinned hinges this time and find them superior. Flying will tell. Gp or Radio South, a CA hinge is a CA hinge. Solid matter that will bend so many times. Whats wrong with the motor mount? CF pushrods are great. I needed weight on the tail so 4/40 stays. Joe

Matt, I have to agree with Joe on this one. If I had already installed CA hinges in this airplane I don't think I would change them out either. I have been pretty negative on the stock CA hinge topic, but mainly pertaining to larger sized airplanes with gas engines. I did use Radio South hinges in ththe UCD and added extra hinges to the ailerons. Your call, but I would fly as is and do a thorough hinge check during preflight.

Joe and others, In case you didn't read about this, I had two of three stock CA hinges fail on the rudder in Pitts-II after only three or four flights. Got the plane down with no damage. When I checked the hinges on all movable surfaces they were very brittle and tore very easily. I changed all the hinges and replaced with Kletts hinge points. Using a DA 50 on the Pitts. IMHO - vibration from the gasser combined with cold weather and dousing with CA caused the failure, but no conclusive evidence. I will never use CA hinges again in a 1/4 scale and up with a gas engine.

thanks for the input Joe and Roger. Yesterday I saw a GP Cub with a YS63 lose its struts during flight due to BOTH hinges failing. Of course he used the stock GP CA hinges and he never flys the plane hard so I began to wonder. Another reason why I am changing out is becuase both ailerons are not flexing equally becuase I think I did a poor job putting them in so I might just go ahead and re-align it all and get the radio South ones in. My pal Lee even suggested going hardcore on the rudder and putting small Robarts in...

hmm..

I have both the GP cub and the 3D ....Ca's on both plane's control surface's no problem's yet ,I'll keep an eye on it [:-]....As far as the cub wing strut's ca hinge's failing they are crap to begin with and if you didn't install then yourself no tellin if they where done right ...Then again look at the force the wing strut is under compared to the hinge's your control surface's are ....It's like a surf board being held by that little P.O.S...If you are going to cut the ca's you have installed ,then I would use Robart pivot point hinge's( I think Robart call's them HINGE POINT's) and gorilla glue...See the review in the RCU magazine they have a video that you can watch....JW

hi fellas

i'm reading all the posts and i'm reading lots of comments about using the gp ca hinges vs.pinned hinges vs. robarts hinge point .i'm studing the u-can-do 60 instructions now and am about ready to start assembly. My question:after using the various hinges ,what would you fellas suggest i use as i am about ready to start assem?
I'm not a true 3-d flier.i'm a sport flier who likes to do some aerobatics, using a os 91 surpass 11.This thread has been very informative and i plan on doing some of the mods i see suggested;landing gear ;control rods;adding right thrust.I'd like to thank everyone for keeping this thread going. Its a great hobby.

kroflite54 - As with any topic on RCU you will get mixed opinions. This is good because in the end it makes you think and you ultimately have to make your own decisions. I used Radio South hinges on this 60 sized ARF. I added two additional hinges to the ailerons. I felt these were fine on this sized airplane and considering my flying style. I fly probably like you do. I would not use the stock CA hinges, or CA hinges of any type on a 1/4 scale and up, especially with a gas engine. Vibration from gassers seems to be the big culprit on CA hinges. I am using the Surpass 91 on mine and didn't make any changes in the thrust angle. I am very pleased with mine as is. Have probably 40 or more flights on it now.

Ken, again I must state that I've never lost a stock hinge, but wanted to get a little more serious on this model. First time on pinned hinges and its not in the air as of yet. Aside from the obvious increase in strength, the resistance is zero with the pinned hinges. Easy application with 30 min. epoxy and the barrel on the hinge aids in obtaining a nice even gap between control surface and wing. The low or non existing resistance now puts more torque into moving the control surface and less in fighting the solid tab CA hinges. Before application just smear some vaseline on a palet and dip the barrel in the vaseline so glue won't stick to the pin and knuckles of the hinge. Good luck, Joe

P.S. I did find a good use for the stock GP hinges. Cut a strip and use it to stuff the epoxy into the slots for the pinned hinges. Regards, Heloise
