Good news....I have been trying to stray away from calling DA about the shipment of the 50 because I know they probably get like a million calls a day on it, but I checked my bank account just now and low and behold guess what has been charged to my visa debit...That's right...a bill for 886 from DA!!!! How can you say OVERLY EXCITED!!!!!! Now I wonderwhen it will arrive.....

Deadsticker,

Yes, I thought it would be better to come from behind.

Also, now that you have your engine, when are you getting home so you can play with it?

Deadsticker ----
One silly question. How can an engine that cost $559 total $886? Talk about getting it from the behind. I think we're all interested to see your reaction to how the DA runs. LET US ALL KNOW.

Well the DA 50 cost $549.00 plus shipping. Don't forget you'll need an exhaust system, propellers and yes a Propeller Hub Drill Rig. Also on the list, a battery or kill switch, standoff's and battery pack.

And if you want to get fancy you could use a fiber-optic electronic kill switch. Your lucky you can get away with $886 for all the above and still be excited about receiving a credit card bill of this amount.

In the long run, its only money, we can't take it with us so we might as well turn it into airplanes and go have some fun.

rcguy1 hit it on the head, I ordered the DA50R, bisson muffler, 2-22x10 mezjlik, 2-23x10 mezjlik, 1-24x8 Menz S, 1-22x12 3 blade mejzlik, and the drill jig. I already have duralite plus batts, and a fiber optic kill from a different project. and the motor comes with standoffs. I will have to make another standoff out of hard ply about just under a half inch. That is where the 886 came from. I am hoping it arrives at my house before I get back,(for those of you that don't know, I am in Germany right now).

And Andy, I will be getting back to the states in 12 days. Only now I have 2 Patty's to play with! I ordered the 33% Aeroworks Extra 330L ARF in the patty scheme, powered by a DA100!!! I am ever so ancious to get back. Now I have a big sister little sister thing going on with the patty's.... And I am planning a trip to the 3W factory this coming weekend. I called and they said come on over. Now i hope I can get out of a meeting.. Have fun and when I get home, if someone doesn't beat me to it, I will post some tach readings from the "little beast"!!

Airplane insurance....isn't that what AMA is for? But the way I feel is if it goes in it will be MY fault, so why cry and whine about it? And like Andy said, It's only money. And that is what I have a job for!!!

DeadSticker,

12 days, I'll bet your starting to have trouble sleeping at night.

Eventually I want to to build something big enough to take a DA or 3W 100 size engine.

I am envious that you are going to tour the 3W plant. I would love to do that. Is it cheaper to buy an engine in Germany and ship it home or cheaper to buy it in the states?

John,

I'm afraid you'll get as many opinions on that as there are posts here. I have a 3W48B2, I've never had a smoother running engine. It fits inside the cowl and looks great.

jmulder, Andy is right. You have to make the decisions. First one is it going to be gas or glow. I would recommend gas for this size plane because glow fuel is expensive. A good glow engine for this plane is the Moki 2.10 and if your interested in gas there are a host of engines that would fit the bill. Like the BME 50, ZDZ 50 DA50 and 3w50 or the 3w48. All of these gas engines are priced within $50.00 of each other and all engineered well. I have the BME50 installed and very satisfied with this engines performance.

So now it's time to make some decisions. Good luck!

Default Another Engine question

I am considering this plane.

I have a FPE 3.2. I noticed at lease one person with this motor.

How's it fly the plane. What's the final weight of the plane with this motor? Also, does anyone make a pitts style muffler for the FPE motors?

Thanks,
Eric

I have a F.P.E. on wagstaff. I will post some pictures with the cowl on. Or if you want you can come over and take a look at it. I do not have a scale do you?

Default FPE 3.2

Willie,

Thanks for the pic.

I may take you up on the visit. I am going to decide on the plane in the next week or so.

I do have a scale. The FPE 3.2 with out the muffler, but with the ignition on a digital scale weight 3lbs 8ozs. I think I will stick with it and get a slimline pitts muffler for it rather than the stock.

Thanks again,
Eric

Whats the heaviest weight this thing will fly at?(not a hot rock)
I'm planning on using a G-62 with spring starter and cup mount if it will get the correct distance to the cowl. If not I'll have to make
some stand offs to get the distance needed.
Can this aircraft handle this much weight?
Really wondering??

Bob,

I have a 3W48B2 on my PW Extra 300 it weighs 4.5 lbs with muffler. I have 10 servos in the plane along with a fiberoptic kill switch. The plane comes in at 16 lbs 6 oz. It has not flown yet because the weather has not cooperated.

I have a question too....

I have modified the ailerons and the stab to accept DMK control horns.

My question is,..do I need to do the same thing to the rudder,...being as there is a plywood plate on both sides for control horn mounting.

Does the control horn need to be mounted so that it is perpendicular to the rudder surface? or does it need to be mounted so that it is 90 degrees in relation to the thickest surface of the rudder (meaning there would have to be a spacer cut at an angle to mount it to, or a dowel inserted through the rudder and cut at 90 degrees on both ends with a hole drilled through the center for mounting the control horn.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated !!

Robert,
i have one with a G62. It flies great! I just bolted the engine to the box and pushed the cowl on another inch. It looks great and helped with the CG.

I was thinking about that, but the Germany economy is about the same as in the US. And the exchange rate is 1 to 1, so it would be about the same. I was going to buy a couple Mejzlik props for the DA 100 the other day, but they were actually cheaper from DA. Especially with the local tax....whew!!! They wanted $170.00 Euro for a 3 blade 28x12, and Da sells them for 139. So I would probably just go through AI or Chief ACFT if I was to buy a 3W. Just my thoughts......

Oh and 9 DAYS LEFT!!!!

When you said modify did you uncover the surface so as to facilitate 3D throws. The existing balsa mounts in the ailerons and elevators will put your pushrods at some odd angle.
As for the rudder the control horn linkage points should be perpandicular to the hinge line. I used Rocket city horns and the mounting nuts compressed the ply at the front in order to sit flush.

AeroDave,
Are you using a cup mount?
The distance from the back of the cup mount
to the front of the prop flange is 6 5/8"
on my engine.
I think that's close to what they are calling for
from reading the threads...I don't have mine yet.
Going to have to call my not so local hobby shop
to see if they heard anything from GP.
(30 Miles) maybe I should have ordered from Tower
They were offering $40 off if I spent over $500 bucks
I would have done that easy.
I'm not in a real big hurry, I'm trying to finish up a 1/3
scale Laser 200 our group scratch built six of em.

cup mount......no, I'm using the flat plate mount that came with the engine. what that does is move the engine back about an inch so that its not so nose heavy. Its a pretty good solution to the weight of this motor. the cowl still fits just fine, it just slides back on the fuse a bit. I know its not ideal, but it looks great, hovers wonderfully and is a great IMAC plane.
