Bruce, I thought you had the CG sorted out and your 60 was flying good. What happened? The gruesome details please.

The Twist flew great. done many touch n goes this am. then the wind got to blowing like crazy.... I get a little crazy when the wind blows too .... I love to hang on the prop and watch the wind blow it across the field. That is what i was doing .. hanging on prop and laffing at it going with the wind. It got out about 100 yards or so and fell out of the hover. I thought she was inverted so gave full down, hammered throttle .... only problem ........ it was not inverted .. she dove straight into the ground.... dumb thumbs, messing around to close to the ground out that far, and old eyes I guess. The correct CG, at least for mine was 5.25. it flew excellent, and was very stable in the high gusty wing. I am the cause of its demise! .... should have known better cause out that far, I have trouble anymore with orientation when it tips over. old age (71) and diabetes is taking its toll on the vision i guess (not an excuse). dunno if i will replace it or not. i think i am about twisted out for a while. Maybe next fall when all the snow birds come back down again, I'll get another one. U know... ya win some nd ya lose some .. thems the breaks aye!!!

again guys .. thanks for all the information and help

Bruce

WOW[X(][X(] I say get yourself right back on the horse, when you have a plane that flys just how you like it its always worth another one...... always. some T_ _ _ Ters are on planes 7&8 and probably more.

Sorry to hear of the mis hap[&o] but it comes with the hobby as I'm sure you know. all we can do is laugh and rebuild...

This is my twist 40. A guy give it to me broke in half and completely un-coverd. So I added a little flair and the Magnum .91RFS
Jack...that puppy sure looks good!! I love planes that stand out from the mass...Fly her like you steal her!!

Bruce...guess I just read the answer to my response to your message..you DID crash it!![][]
Bummer dude...and you know what??Forget the age thing.....I am 39...I flew my Harrier last weekend...could not see squat!!!
That was the 2nd flight....brand new plane...and it will be dismantled this week..all the gear will go into a new fresh T _ _ _ T.
You know what?? No matter if you fly the .46 size or the .60 size..both of them are really visible in the sky..that is what I like about both those planes...the coloring is well though out

Bruce....get another one dude...if you like the way it flew....stick with it!!
I have a Katana .46 and love it..but the Harrier.....naahhhhh..
I made the decision only to fly T _ _ _ T's from now on...

Welllllll ..... after thinking about it, i went out in my work shop and looked things over. I just happened to have a slightly used twist wing & a brand new set of tail feathers. Soooooooo ... got on the phone and ordered a new fuse, canopy, and fuel tank. Also ordered a new set of push rods, push rod tubes and a gasket set for the slightly mashed Saito 100. Just hope that i learned to be a bit more "docile" flying the new build!

later guys

Bruce

Good to here Bruce, Like the old saying goes,"when life hands you lemons......make lemonade!!!!!!"
I still can't believe you had to add that much weight to the nose, on my 60 I've got a Saito 120 and didn't have to add that much weight.
Better luck on the next!!

Went to the LHS today with my wife to get some nitro blast and triangle balsa. When I walked out the store, I was kinda wondering why my wife was still in the store. Few minutes later she walked out with... A BRAND NEW T_ _ _ T 40-SIZE". So building a .60-size now, soon followed by a brand new .40 size.......It feels so nice to be spoiled...

Alright fellas,
A while back someone had replied to me with some info. on a T-rex they fly. I am now the proud owner of a T-rex 450 and have a few questions, problem is... everyone I seem to hear from on the forums and at the LHS's, are young kids and have no fear. Does anyone remember emialing me about this??? If not, anyone with experience that would be willing to contact me would be much appreciated. Feel free to contact me off the forum through my profile. Thanks!

Excellent Bruce !!!! thats what I like to hear

and yes losing site of them is part of the game, I have lost site of mine a many times too, sometimes I get lucky though, and get to use some glue those nights. and other times, I'm not so lucky and I get to come home and do nothing until the next flight day.

Dutch you are a lucky lucky man tell the wife she might be a T_ _ _ Taholic also, I too am a fortunate man with my wife, glad to hear other people are as happy as me.

[:-]Now I have a sudden craving for lemonade for some reason.

Hey 2hi2c, As I can see right now, yes you spelled that right, I'll have to re-check that after the Zap vapors settle from the basement.[sm=bananahead.gif]

Well we are off to Yankee stadium to see the red sox and Yanks battle one out, the Yanks better win, they have been TERRIBLE this year so far,[:@] but its very early for them yet.

Then were off to the field tomorrow, hopefully someone will be there to use my camera to take some T _ _ _ T video footage of us in the rain, yup,, more rain predicted for tonight through Monday, [:@][&:][&o]but were going to fly anyway and say farewell to a great club member and friend and a member of RCU as well,, as he is moving to Colorado Monday. we will have to fly the missing man formation, he will return periodically for his job though and fly with us when he's in town. so that will be cool.

Hey guys, I acually have a building question When you guys remove the covering from the stabilizer before you glue it in the fuse, do you prefer to cut it away with a sharp hobbyknife or do you use the soldering iron to remove the covering??I remembered that on my 1st T _ _ _ T I used a hobby knife to cut it away, but I know some builders prefer the soldering iron instead to kinda melt the covering I assume...what do you guys prefer??

dutch, Weller makes a pencil type iron that comes with an Exacto style blade as one of the attachments. I bought one to give this method of covering removal a try. I like the idea of just touching the covering and have it melt without a chance of cutting the balsa underneath. I haven't been able to try it though; I lost the iron somewhere in this mess I call a house.

Setting here thinking about the new upcoming twist. If i have to add a lot of weight to the nose again, then it would seem prudent to me to make it usefull weight dontcha think? that being true, then It would seem reasonable to me that my Saito 125 would be a good way to help balance it. checked it out on my scale and it tipped at 4.3 oz more ... or was it 3.4 oz??? don't remember, but it would seem better to add muscle instead of fat! what do you guys think? Is my thinking flawed? Do you think a Saito 125, 16X4W prop & 25% fuel would make it hum?

I have never tried the melted mono before but I'm sure it would be a good way to go, I always just take a spanky new fresh blade to cut the mono-cote before bonding the surface in, the new blade is the key,,,, you barely have to touch it. And I make sure the epoxy is right over the cut just for safe measures, I always put the stab in first, mark it out when its where I want it, then I cut through the mono-cote ever so lightly about 1/8 inside that line, that way when I epoxy it, the epoxy won't bleed out the side. and it re-seals the slice mark if one has occured.

aa2dd I like your thinking, if your talking about the 40 size, I'm pretty sure you will be working for NASA if the wings stay attached with that 1.25 on there. if its the .60 size which is what I'm sure your talking about, I don't know anything about the 60 yet. however a friend of mine is going to purchase the 60 size this week, so at least I'll get to see one now.

Today was an awesome flying day, I was T_ _ _ tin all over the sky for hours I'll tell you there is nothing like a new plane, knife edges are now effortless its amazing the difference in handling with a new plane and a plane with 3 years of extra glue and wood added, either way both planes flew great but now I don't seem to have to fly it as much I just tell it what to do and it does it, the old plane was like a child,,, I'd tell it what to do, but I had to stand there making sure it stayed doing it.

we went to the NYY game last night[&o] so I woke up late this morning and in my hurry I forgot the dang camera, so Videos and new pics will have to wait another week,,,, [&o]Ughhhh

Happy flying kids

To whom it may concern..........when I assemble the tail assembly.........I dry fit the horz. stab as well as the vert. stab and just put a nice fillet of silicon at the covering junction. Problem free and easy to repair as well as fuel proof.

Bruce,
Being that the Saito 100 and 125 are the same size because they use the same case (the way I understand it is that the 125 just uses a bigger cylinder) you can always switch them out if you need to. I still think something was goofy with you last plane or set up. Like I said, I have the exact same set up of plane and engine and it balances perfectly. Maybe do a dry run without fully installing the motor to see how she balances. The 125 on this bird might have you ripping the wings off and working for NASA as well. I'm sure it would work fine, but that is HUGE power for this bird. If you do go with the 125, promise us video! That baby might actually end up in orbit!!![X(][X(][X(]

TimC..I agree with you..although I had no problems with my current T _ _ _ T, for as far as cutting the balsa, I'd rather be safe than sorry...if the melting trick is easier and avoids cutting the balsa, then I'm all for it...I think I will try the melting method on the covering of a Katana I recently crashed, and let you know how it turned out..

Down....Do I understand you don't cut the covering away at all then??HHmm......well..I trust on your experience, believing that it sure holds up well then...but I think I'm too chicken to go that route.....I'll try the melting part first i think.....
