Hello all,
Sort of returning to RC Planes after 15 year absence. My last plane was a scratch built Russian flying Boat. Spent all my money and time on her. Flew two or three times then joined USMC. Plane, engines, radios and all my RC stuff was permanently borrowed by an unknown person while I was in Boot Camp. Enough of my sob story, I now have three boys who love airplanes and I would love to get them into the hobby. Problem is of course $$$. Working 40+ a week is barely enough to make ends meet as a Quality Assurance Inspector for a major Corporate aircraft repair center. I finally got the ok from momma to get plans for a Sig Kadet Senior and will hopefully spend the winter scratch building it with my boys. Would love to find someone who has a good radio set 4 channel and a solid four stroker .30 to .50 for this project. I think this forum is an excellent example of the quality of people in this hobby.
Any help would be Great.

I can vouch for Pauluk2w- he is a good guy, we have dealt before...
Mike Lawrence- I got your e-mail, you might try tracking down one thing at a time- The airframe is generally the easiest to start with (check your e-mail).
Happy New Year everybody!

Hello, Everyone
My name is Mike Lawrence I'm 47 years old and live in Pinson al. just outside of
Birmingham and I'm writing to see if anybody has a trainer airframe 40 or 60 size they're willing to part with. I read that a 60 is the easiest to learn on.
I'm new to the hobby of RC
airplanes and I really just want to learn how to fly. I need a trainer and an engine and 4 JR servos, also RX. I bought a used JR662 trans here on RCU an I also bought a Solo trainer airplane on RCU but the guy never shipped it to me. I reported him to paypal and RCU but paypal was unable to recover my funds. If anyone can help you can email me at [email protected] or [email protected], If you can help that would be great.
PS. If feel like I'm begging, well I guess I am.
Thank you,
Mike Lawrence

This is a great idea guys. Like most of you I really cant' afford this hobby. But I'm in it anyway. For any of you that would really like to help a deserving guy, let me tell you about Mr. Hill. He is in the forums as hILLVILLE. Mr Hill is a middle school math teacher somewhere in IN. or IL.This guy teaches a class on R/C model airplane building. He has about 15 7th graders at a time building a class model. The kids chip in for the kit, but he has to buy all of the other parts. The kids each get some stick time on the buddy box, and several of his students have gone on to become hard core R/C er's. This one man is contributing more to the hobby than anyone I can think of. If you would like to help him in some small way I am sure that he would be very appriciative. PM him and see if you can help. He has posted some photos of the class at work in the TriPacer build thread in the Kit Building forum. Check it out, Page four. Thanks guys. This post is about all I can do to help him. I wish it was more.

sig man, if you have a charger that will charge 1 cell like the hobbico quick field charger MKII, then cut off the plug on your glow ignitor charger and use the field charger with the plug to charge the ignitor.

Alright everyone,
I have an OS 46AX and a Saito 56 both with about 100 flights on them for someone that really needs one. Mufflers included
The OS runs very well and the Saito has given me some fits at times but otherwise is very strong.
Only one engine goes to each person. Props will be included. The Saito could use new prop nuts and the OS comes with a Dubro Prop nut and I do not have the original prop nut for it.
PM me with why you think you need one of them and for what purpose (this MUST be verifiable) and what you will do to "Pay it Forward" The final decision is mine and I will make that decision at the end of the week.
Shipping will need be paid for by the person that wants one via Paypal to my Paypal account.
EDIT: The OS46AX has been given
EDIT: The Saito 56 is now gone

I have an 11 year old grandson who has been very active in sports. Due to a birth problem( Pigeon toed) he was just told by his doctor that he must give up sports due to damage to his heels from the problem not being corrected when he was a baby. ( his mother didn't believe there was a problem). So now his main concentration is on girls. He is obsessive about this and has girls calling on him as old as 14! My fear is that trouble is on the horizon as these young ladies are taken in my my grandson's salesmanship. He does have an interest in models though and I would like to find someone who could make me a deal on an old 3 or 4 channel radio and we would like to find something like a Dynaflite piece o cake or butterfly. I would like to get a kit someone is willing to part with cheap so we can build it. Would prefer to power it with electrics rather than gas. If anyone can help out here or has any suggestions, please reply.
Thanks,
Terry

haoleman,
if you are looking to build something like a .40 size kit and you want to power it with electrics, i have a bit of advice. BRUSHLESS. for something that size brushless is the real key. however, brushless motors are expensivebut i can help here.. while i do not have a motor to give away, i can give some advice. i have recently got into the do-it-yourself brushless thing. it saves you a load of $$ and it is really not tough to do. most people use CD rom drive motors, which are around 9 pole, 22 mm or so. they wil power a small electric model. here's where my advice comes in. If you have an old VCR you would be willing to destroy, there is a motor called a capstan motor inside. it's nestled in the gears usually below the spindle motor. (the spindle motor is the silver one you see that is crooked when you open up the VCR to put a tape in). capstan motors are ideal for this application. i recently dis-assembled one to find a 24 pole, 56 mm stator and extremely light rotor. this will easily swing a 14" electric prop direct drive due to it's diameter. also, because it has a VERY wide diameter but the poles are not that big, it will not draw much current for the kind of torque it puts out. while i have not yet done formal tests on it, (i do not have the controller to drive it yet) i am making an educated guess of about 30 amps, about the same as most high performance RC cars, if you are familliar with them. If my guess is anywhere near the actual figures, a comprable motor would cost well over $200 retail.
If you are looking into a smaller kit, like little electrics, i would suggest www.gobrushless.com as it will provide you with all the parts to make your own and save some $$. the GBV kit costs $8 and is roughly equivelant to a speed 400 motor when wound correctly. a comprable brushless motor would cost about $60. it comes with all the parts you need, including wire, case, magnets, EVERYTHING.
Or, if you prefer to spend the extra $$ on a pre-made one, you can find a good selection of them at www.balsapr.com at pretty reasonable prices.
at any rate, if you intend to go electric, i would visit that site anyway because they have all the components you will need to get about any size electric running and running well. they used to be just cheap GWS stuff, but they have grown into a pretty respectable business. i would order from them any day.
Cheers,
Spaceclam

Interesting find on the VCR motors. I'll be looking for some at the segunda!
All of my engines are gassers and come as weedeaters etc from the segunda (2nd hand store that weekly brings used stuff from S Calif.) Shipping and delivery of items to La Paz BCS is a real pain and expensive. Getting the coroplast (corrogated plastic) was another story...Harbor Sales shipped to San Diego, and then being so large the boxes would not fit in a motorhome..they ended up being loaded on a pleasure yacht coming to Mexico and I picked them up dockside at the local marina...delivery around the cape by boat! Only took 4 months of planning but I did not have the hundreds of $ they wanted for shipping to BCS!
I have not read the whole thread as yet, but plan to. I did notice that there are several people looking for planes.
If you are handy or short on funds take a look at building them yourself. There is a great engine conversion forum and SPAD forum here at RCU. Also http://www.spadtothebone.com/ for plans and http://spadworld.net/ can get people started.

yep. just go to your nearest garage sale and buy a VCR for like $5, or maybe you can post up some flyers around your neighborhood about where to bring their broken VCRs.
i was just recently given another VCR from a completely different company (the first one was emerson and the last one was mitsubishi) and wouldn't you know it, the motor case was identical, so was the stator. the only difference is the center section.
People are always looking for good brushless motors to soup up, but i have not found anything on capstan motors yet so i assume that i am one of the first to discover this.

Thanks Space Clam!
This looks interesting. Never built motors before. This might be a good project once we find a plane to build. I wanted to get my grandson started on a wood kit and having built a gentle lady as my first rc plane years ago and learning to fly it seat of the pants, I thought something like the dynaflite piece o cake or butterfly would be a good choice as they are incredibly slow. I want to be able to get him going on something he can have easy success with as his attention span isn't very great. We have built several plastic car kits and customized them but he wants something that flys. I would just go out and buy him something at Tower but I am currently unemployed so can't afford to spend much right now. As to how I will pay it forward... I will donate the plane to someone when my grandson has learned to fly and can graduate to something larger (like my 40 trainer).

Thanks to bubbagates my kids are anxoiusly awaiting the arrival of an OS 46AX. It is refreshing to see there are still some decent people left in this world. My heartfelt thanks to you sir![sm=biggrin.gif]
I have an old COX .09 Tee Dee with a muffler for any one who needs it. It would be a perfect fit on a glider or a small trainer with no throttle. Please PM me if you are interested.

Adam and Mike,
You guys are very welcome and I am glad I could help. I am still out of town and will be delayed one more day so I suspect I will ship the items to both of you either Friday or Monday.
Sorry for the delay and thanks to both of you for covering the shipping costs

Hope this is the correct thread for posting ideas to assist RCU in Pay it Forward.
The color coding is a good idea BUT there are color-blind people who do not see the lite green color on a white background. I see it but have to look closely. The bold red is quite distinct to most people. Also med to dark blue is normally distinct as well This may be useful in planning how to set up your parameters.

haoleman,
No problem. you can get used VCRs just about anywhere, i would reccomend a garage sale or an electronics recycling place or something. Do note however that it weighs about 4 oz and will swing a decent size prop so it would probably be best suited for a 20 size model.

And now it's time for me to step up again.......I have a OS .40 SR that's been repaired with a Magnum .45 piston and sleeve and it runs well. I will send this out to a new home for the cost of the shipping. PM me and convince me as to why it should be yours and it will be.
Grrrrrrrrrrr.........I did say "convince" did I not? This does not consist of a single PM of a single sentence "I'm a newbie and I need one......is that good enough?" Or am I not clear enough here? I was in a good mood until I got that PM....I won't mention your name but you know who you are....
