Another Beginner Build - Sig Somethin' Extra

Be interesting if they sub-contract to L3.
That would be funny when you walk down their halls and they can't do a thing about it. Probably no such luck.
I've handled a 14MZ on my field (it was making tea at the time). After about 5 min, I found the on/off switch. Much more radio than I need at this time.
Got to admit that it sure is pretty though.

Cabling... not much. I've helped run some cable when I was at L3. That's about it. Mostly, I like to work on the helpdesk aspect of things. Getting people to work with their computers.
Though I do like messing with hardware too. My personal computer is heavily modded (well, in my opinion; in a modder's opinion it's probably not modded much at all).

Kiswa,
Help desk??? arrrrrggggggghhhhhhhH!!!!!!!! nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! not the help desk!!!!!!!!

There is no way I could work a help desk. I would go crazy, probably stick a letter opener in my forehead!!!!
I was asking about cabling because I do cabling on a sub-contract basis for a company that is contracted with Wal-mart and Lowe's. I know with everything that is going on in your neck of the woods with the hurricane there are going to be a lot of cabling teams rebuilding Wal-mart's. They've already asked me twice to go on a team, but I don't want to be away from my family that long. I'll probably get more work because of it, I will be expanding my coverage area so I can pick up the slack for others that do go down that way. Doing the cabling is really good money, but it can be a hot, dirty, and long job. To do cabling you have to be able to work Cat 5e/6, Fiber, Coax (normal and HDTV), loss prevention (security cameras), phone, and any other odd cabling that comes up. If you could have done it I was thinking about trying to line you up a job interview. sorry I couldn't be more help.

Ken, I appreciate the thought anyway. That's very kind of you.
And krossk, I hope I get that Monokote soon too. I want to get back to covering ASAP!
EDIT: And Bruce: [sm=bananahead.gif]

Hey KEN! Thanks! I've made some Walmart runs before. They've since started using contractors for our cabling needs and I no longer have to do that stuff. I promise that I don't miss the tall ladders and making the runs to the pharmacy up front! (I got stuck on a 16' ladder doing that once) Now my work is all in the switch. (nope, not the network switch. my stuff has always been called a switch) In light of recent occurances, if you guess who I work for, let's keep it a secret.
Yep, this thread is WAY off course, but dang, you can't expect people not to get interested!

I'd say, of the 21 pages of posts here... maybe 5 of them have nothing to do with my build. But that's entirely my fault since I'm the one who got it off on tangents (mostly about my job hunting). Oh well, I think people are finding it interesting.
And I do expect to get that Monokote in the next day or two! Then I shall finish covering this bird and get the final assembly underway. I can't wait to see this thing in the air.

Kiswa,
As a moderator it's our job to try and keep the threads "on topic", either that or close them down. In the last 2 build threads that I've watched the threads to go off topic occasionally. I did some thinking about this and came to this conclusion, that they didn't need to be closed. The reason I decided to not close them because the off topic posts usually mimics life. You case for example, your posts leaned toward your job situation. That situation in the real world did affect your build, so in my mind it wasn't really off topic. IMHO, building a plane can get interrupted by a lot of things and showing those interruptions here in the thread just mimics real world life. Heck, I've had builds that sit on the table for months with nothing getting done on them. I don't mind if those interruptions are shown here. Just as long as the discussion comes back to the build then I have no problems with it happening. Now if the discussion went off topic , for instance talking about another plane or something, then I would close that down. But as it happened here I think it's perfectly alright.
Well, that's my 2¢ worth!!

Good to know Ken! I'm glad you didn't feel like my thread was getting too far off topic. If you ever feel that it is, let me know and I'll try to steer it back on track before it has to be locked.
I opened up my transmitter this morning. It works now. I think the only problem was that the screw holding the circuit board with the switch on it, up against the mechanical switch was a little loose, so it wasn't making full contact, and therefore not activating the switch. While I had it open, I went ahead and checked every other screw in it for looseness. It appears to be working just fine now, so I'm not too concerned anymore.
I'll still send it in for a checkup, but that'll be a little later now. I'm trying to talk the wife into letting me get a 6 channel radio with dual rates and expo (two things this one doesn't have). Well, this one's only 5 channels, so it doesn't have a sixth channel either I guess.
Also, the one I'm looking at can store up to ten models, whereas this one only keeps two in memory. So, basically, this transmitter is full since I have two planes now (well, one and two thirds planes anyway
).

Be careful how you word your request. She may use the 2 model memory as a way of holding you down to only having 2 planes at a time. [:'(]

Kiswa, I've got alot left to play with, but dual rates are a necessity with the SE. That's gonna BE your learning curve. Expo will help alot too. Mixing flaps and elevator is nice too. It didn't make as big a difference as it did on other airplanes, but it will tighten your loops and help to prevent snapping out. If you found a loose screw (that's a loose nut behind the keyboard) I'd be tempted to not worry at all. When you shop for a new radio, try to maximise the mixes and controls. Even if you don't know what they're for now, you will later!
I need a new radio too. If you can talk her into it, be sure to let me know what method you use. Pity, guilt, etc.

Usually that works.

Hey guys, sorry if you got the impression that I was complaining about the thread getting off topic. I was just trying to poke fun at the diversions from covering. Glad to hear things are looking promising on the job front too.
As far as radios go, I think you mentioned already having JR equipment. If you can find one of the promotional 8103 packages, you'd probably really like it. I got the Tx, and flight pack w/4 811 digital servos from Chief Aircraft last year (don't remember the exact price - ~ $350-$400) It would be compatible with all of your existing gear and will do just about anything you could ask it to. And I personally love the ergonomics of it. BUt I hear that JR is discontinuing it in favor of the 9303. Barring that, you would probably do well with the 6102.

More nights where she doesn't cook.
More nights children with a sitter.
Flowers. No candy - fattening.
Trip home to see MOM! (leaves you home to play with your toys)
Lots of ways to share the wealth.
Oh yeah, YAWN, college fund. [:@]

No kids... yet.
She gets flower at work (from women coworkers, so it's not wierd), so I kinda skip that one.
She's planning on visiting her family next month actually.
