Lookyj,

Excellent take 1 with the helmet-cam. I too thought that the cat would take a swat at the heli. Here's food for thought, how about a remote hookup, that would be operated by foot, to zoom in and out with the helmet cam. Never know.

Now i am remembering why i set the Blinged CP on the shelf. Crash will testify that i had my fair share of issues with the HDX300 CNC head as will choppers and most of the other band of brothers. Well, it seems I still have not found the problem. New main shaft, new spindle, new bearings and i just can't seem to actually find the source of my wobble in the upper rotor head. Without the blade grips on I get maybe a very slight wobble from side to side in the rotor head itself (almost imperceptable. As soon as I install the blade grips and spool it up it acts like the spindle is bent (blade grips move up and down slightly while the head is turning at about 400RPM) It does smooth out but with the autorotation hub and trued main gear as it spools down it about shakes the heli apart with the added weight of the blades on. Trying to fly it this way creates bent main shafts in about 1 second. So........ I am here to seek the expertise of the collective mind.
None of the CNC parts are bent that I can tell....... I may order a new upper rotor head but really don't want to go that way if i don't have to. There is no physical way to bend the blade grips that I can tell and i actually find it hard to believe that the upper rotor head can also be bent. There isn't enough hours on that head to suggest worn dampeners (O rings) so that is really what has been puzzling me. Bent links? Magical voodoo? Not enough Wild Turkey?? Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.................. ......... CNC............heh

ArrowNaughtic,

Time for some bench testing. Disconnect the tail motor. Grips off. Spool up in hand, if you feel any vibration at all,(mark one flybar paddle), move flybar left or right, about a 1/8 inch, doesn't matter here. Spool up in hand, if the vibration gets worse, move the other direction and keep doing this until there is NO vibration. Distance of the paddles from the head don't fall into the equation on the smaller helis. Weight is the key here, BALANCE. I had one, that the distance of the flybar from the rotor head was 1/4 inch off being centered, but there was zero vibration.

Install the grips and spool up again, if you now have a vibration problem, then one of the grips is heavier than the other. Just a few grams can make the difference.

Hope this helps, at least for starters and that you have a gram scale.

PUT UP WITH THE OLD MAN !

it worried me ( a bit ) to see the CX-2 fly too close to the LOOKYJ kitten. One NEVER knows what cats will DO actually, and had it reached to touch it, those blades are much too sharp.
So I kept on thinking, and since pictures are worth a thousand words, I just made this little video just to show how one can SAFELY play with the Heli and the Cat. You can see the animal
actually swats the heli down, with NO DAMAGE to either. The blades on this FLY are surrounded by a circle of piano wire, even if the heli hits me in the face, nothing at all happens.

Thanks for being patient : but at least I can show just how MANEUVERABLE this little RadioShack toy actually is... ! please guys, don't damage house pets, these helis are too sharp

My ol' lady thought your cat was adorable, and can see you to have a close bond.... Thanks for sharing that, I can see you also have acquired a fascination with the heli's....Hope ya have a pleasant evening, Jeff

BAM!!! CRASH! BANG! and the heli goes down =) My fav line, "we are going to continue to fly, the cat wasn't damaged, the helicopter wasn't damaged", and then take off =) ATTACK CAT!

Good shooting Rick Nice vid, thanks for sharing

Hey Dave, thanks for the reply! That post is so deja vu it was almost scary. I know last time i was messing with this head if i remember correctly you gave me the same advice. Sadly, I don't have the flybar paddles on. I am running just the flybar. The more i look at this setup the more i am convinced I have a bent rotor head or grip. Nothing else can possibly explain this. Picture looking at the blade grips at eye level while spooling up the heli with no paddles and no blades. As the RPM's increase you can actually see the blade grips moving up and down. If one didn't know any better you would swear it was a bent spindle/feathering shaft. Being as I replaced grip bearings and both shafts that would mean it is either the rotor head or one of the grips. My next test will be to insert just a feathering shaft in and spool it up again to see if it is in fact the head itself. Wish me luck!
Good to see ya Rick! Always a joy to see you and the critters spooling about the house!
J-Micheal........ yer off for sunnier weather here in a couple of days, hope you are taking a puter with you and keep us posted on your adventures with pics and helmet cam vids!
crashcrash.........Vic ol buddy how ya doing? I need you to chime in with some head symptoms for me too buddy!

What a great little heli. Looks better than the standard air hogs mini. Look like better control as well.

OK.....you've replaced everything above. Now look at below....the 140T main gear and see if it might be out of round/bent/folded/spindled/or mutilated. I highly suspect the main gear at this point. See if the main gear isn't throwing the heli back and forth (wobble).

LookyJ......shame on you....(LOL)

Rick, great video and a great heli. Astounding control and surviveability in a feline attack. I think the door gunner on the heli needs to wake up though...not one defensive round was fired. The cat had the tactical advantage with mutiple weapons attached to his front extremities (claws). Next time, the pilot needs to come in high and come in from the rear flank ...LMAO.

don't worry, I already had PETA give the all clear on my helicopter stunt with Tigger (my cat).

She is actually, very docile and shown great interest in my helis. Even when I'm flying my TREX, she'll come running out and lay right at my feet to watch me fly (early on in my Heli training, she learned the safest place was at my feet!). Tigger see's the helis more of a backscratcher then a threat, as when the heli comes to a stop she'll run up and rub against the main blades for a quick scratch.... but only after I've disconnected the battery!

I've been working all day to try an rig a water drop to my helis to help with the fire storms here in So Cal. Seems like once again the state is on fire. It most places Fall means the leaves are changing, here they are burning...

Sad to say, a majority of the fires were arson....

My dog learned early on with the CP-Pro to stay behind the operator. She got swatted in the leg once when it was spooling down. No injuries to the dog or the heli, and it only took once and she got the lesson. She's a pretty smart girl.

Lookyj: Yeah the fires down there are crazy..! Been keeping up on the news an such...Stay to yer north, no visits down by the blazes...Saw the weather in L.A. was 91..!! Whew... I'am used to the greater Puget Sound region here on the Peninsula, and it stays quite cool (60 degrees lately)... My heli's motors keep pretty cool here in Washington...Looks like in a few days, They'll be glad I have heat sinks installed...Lol...Be interesting to see any noticable flying characteristics from 220' elevation to 1600' and warmer temps...Glad my dad lives in the quiet part of Cali...(Santa-Margarita). Shall be interesting, but fun...Looking so forward to making some money for upgrades ! Still need a Gyro, batt, and 1 servo...So that will give me some time to study, and understand the heli some more...And lots to read...The hobby shop there is like a miniature Costco...What a change from a very small town hobby-shop, and scary for the wallet ! Take care guy, Jeff

Crash: Yeah, I had to train my two labs to stay clear also...The younger chocolate lab is only 3 years old, and still has the curious ways with them, but the older black lab, she's 10 years old now, and she lies by me and just watches them hovering around....I think she's wondering when I'am actually going to fly them...Lol...

Mine's a Lab/Pit (black). It's the Lab thing, they really don't care as long as they're with you, but they do get curious sometimes. Labs are just awsome animals...a friend for life. If something happened to mine....I'd drive as far as I had to to get another Lab/Pit black female puppy with a white star on her chest and white tipped toes. My wife calls her my "first wife" because we're always together. Never more than 10ft away from me (LOL). Can you tell I think a lot of my dog?

Lot's in common with the B.O.B.'s. I have 2 pups. One is a pure bread Finish Spitz that my wife found. Go figure he ended up being my dog, I didn't even want him. God blessed us with a Lab/Shepard, long story but really was miraculous how we ended up rescuing this dog, we had just had to put down a Lab/Golden Retriever and really weren't ready for another[:@] She ended up my wifes dog, I say this because the way the dogs end up choosing which one they bond to. We just got a rescued rabbit yesterday as well[:'(] I spent the day playing with it and introducing it to my dogs. It's still alive so I'd say it went well I guess if no one claims it we have a new family member

God Bless Ya'll!

My dog goes inside or around the back when I fire up my helis. When she sees it in my hand comeing outside she turns and walks away. Soon as it is down she comes running back for the luvin.

I do have to state here as I did in a thread on the Esky forum. I am bored. I come home and plug a battery in my HBKII and fly patterns and hover practice for about 12-15 minutes, land, fly the T-Rex for about 8 minutes while the HB cools down, then throw another battery in the HB for the last 15 minutes and then land. Where are all the crashes?? Where is all the trim work that needs to be done with each battery? Why doesn't it fall out of the sky for no reason? Why am I not spending more time in the shop doing repairs?? Don't I need to go get parts and upgrades at the LHS??? Why is my bench all neat and tidy with no tools or screws laying around.

OH yeah, this is the HBKII and not my old CP Pro. Man, this is one sweet, inexpensive bird. Exactly what I have been looking for. A month in, one bad crash (pilot error, not a glitch) and I love this thing. I do fly brushless, I do use my DX7, I also installed the T-Rex landing gear and an old T-Rex canopy, but that is all I have done or will do to this baby. Don't get me wrong. As I have said before the the CP Pro is the one what brung me to the dance and it served its purpose, but there's a better looking lady at the dance now.

Brother.....you got it. The HBKII is just awsome once you work the MFGR defects out of it. I got a tail vibration problem right now, haven't figured it out yet, but i will. I just had two horrific crashes last week...both my fault. Personally, I think I got the problem solved because I did actually smack the tail pretty hard. I might have bent the shaft. I'll figure it out, they're not hard at all to figure out.

I had a bad tail vibration as well after a slight tip over. Bent the feathering shaft. I think they are made of wet noodles.

Gotta rub it in on how sweet them HBK2's are don't ya guys....LOl....I've been telling my dad about them, as there good heli's as I constantly keep hearing...definately will be adding 1 to my fleet at least by next year...

Crash: Yeah....Lol....Are labs are purebred. I got the first one which (chelsea/black lab) for a companion to go fishing with as I scout, hike, and fish the rivers here on the Olympic Peninsula. I was pumped, thought it was going to be just perfect and awesome...Only thing I learned from the begining, is they do love the water, and they love to fetch. So That nice cast into the nice calm clear pools with the salmon loaded in there, wasn't the greatest as each time I casted the spinner out into the water, the lab would instantly without hesitation, dive right in after it...! ...Lol... Quite a rough and not so great of a fishing year to say the least for the first couple of years ! Of course now she's trained to stay clear of the water, and just keep by my side...Then I got to experience all this all over again with our chocolate lab Mia...She's now trained to..(Thank-Goodness)

I remember when Chelsea was a pup, she went in after that lure, and the Dungeness River I was fishing in the fall is very cold from the mountain snow melts and rushing to a good flow, but not terribly wide, but she jumped in, and got swept down as she frantically was making a slow swim toward the far bank and into a log jam...she didin't have the strength or size, or experience to get herself up out of the water. Instantly reacting of course I already had my vest off, and had kicked my hip boots off and had got to experience the joy of a nice winter swim to the other side to rescue her ! I'am not sure who was more scared, me or her ! However there wasn't a choice about it...And I had never been colder in my life...Of course it also didn't help that I hike the river, so the car was a nice distance off, which seemed like an eternity to get there..! Ever since then, she chooses to stay by my side when we are fishing down at the river...And knows when we go down to play, it's o.k....Oh so many memories with our beloved animals......... Jeff

My son in law had an almost pure Lab (black). He hunted...it's what he did. Rabbits, squirrels, whatever, even birds. Great with kids too. He committed suicide chasing a rabbit across a busy road because the idiot son in law didn't keep tabs on him. I wanted to throw him in front of a car after the dog got it....the dog was worth more than him. And YEAH.....I love the HBKII. I said in the beginning that it's a mini T-Rex....and it is. Stability, dependability, reliability, and surviveability after a NASTY crash. I'm now considering the BELT CP from E-Sky because it's built better than the HBKII...IMO.

You know your addicted to RC Heli's when:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.) Your flight leaves in 32 hours and you haven't started packing yet because your addicted to working on your heli's, and can't pull away from RCU.....

2.) Your contents in your luggage consists more of RC stuff than clothes or other items....

3.) Your flight reading material consists of a thick Tower Hobbies catalog....

4.) You make sure your batteries are fully charged a few hours before take-off, so there ready to go when you arrive to your destination....

5.) You hope that you can smuggle and hide your TX from security checkpoints....

6.) You download as many You-Tube videos of heli's for your laptop time on board the flight....

7.) You already have a Map-Quest printout of all local hobby shops for your destination area....

Mrasmm(#13, LOL),
Seems like you've been working on the roof for sometime, been there too. At least you've got it under control. Hope the weather pans out for the additional work with the fence.

To Business:

Just a couple questions, 1) Where did you mount the ESC for the brushless motor? 2) What TX are you using? The stock or a DX6 or DX7. This can make alot of difference in you abnormal glitch problem.

If mounted on top of the 3n1 controller, it can cause glitching, in combination of what channel you're on, if using the stock TX.. My original postion of the ESC was top of the 3n1 and caused alot of problems, such as you're having. I moved the ESC to the back side of the skids and no more problems. Also, check all your wire runs and make sure that everything is away from the Battery and ESC as far as possible.

Thanks for the info. the ESC isn't really mounted anywhere, it's temporarily sitting right between the skids below the main gear. Yeah, I've still got the original Tx. The power leads are definately far away from everything, it doesn't seem to be much of an interference issue though, just something to do with the gyro. I just mounted it with a single thickness of servo foam tape, is that enough, or might it need a bit more? It's a bit confusing because it holds sometimes, and other times it just doesn't.

mrasmm - I had the same trouble with the brushless. It was tough to get the heli to move up and down as smoothly as with the brushed. I think you hit it though with the pitch idea. Brushless just has so much more power, you need to adjust throttle and pitch curves to manage the power better. The extra power will also show the slightest weekness in the tail motors. I thought it might have come from glitches but I think the little mototrs just sometime need a split second breather to keep up with the brushless.

I will say, that is not the case with the HBKII. Finally have it up and running after a tree jumped out of nowhere and grabbed it, and man what a difference. Just hope I don't get sucked into to many upgrades for it. I hate the helis that cost $200 but really$1000 when you get all the replacement parts and upgrades.

Have fun with it.
hehe, oh yeah, I will have fun with it =P I think the tail setup seems to have plenty of power to deal with the brushless, it just doesn't turn on, like the gyro is giving it a signal, but not enough of a signal fast enough, like the gyro has a slower response rate that might be more suited for a belt drive tail with a servo or somtehing. I'll definately have to check out reducing the pitch rage, and maybe reducing the cyclic throw to get there, and centering the pitch range more so. i'll just have to play with it. I went to the stock rate gyro to check how it did with the brushless, and it doesn't do crap =P Much much worse than the g90, it's hardley flyable that way, but I guess that's how it goes.

Sounds like you have had fun moving on to the hbk2. Thanks for all your offers and friendliness and thanks for the info and the input =) I'll start working on it again soon and see if I can't get 'er figured out. No flight time in over 3 weeks now =(

Guess if I wasn't an RCU addict (hey I wanna be like Mike, what can I say ), then I would be spending the time working on the bird =P

Then again if I wasn't an RCU addict, I probably would have given up on the bird a while back =D

Jeff -

only 7? I thought for sure you'd have at least a TOP TEN! LOL

pretty funny stuff, for sure...

Crash - looking at the belt cp now? as I watch Ray's DVD one more time I too am thinking about another heli. I noticed his son's TREX is set up with G90 gyro. I have an extra one from my CP Pro. my EFlite brushless and G90 are desperately looking to fly again. dare I say it...... maybe it's time my CP Pro evolves into a TREX!

Arrow - still waiting for some pics of that CP.....
