Motor Break In:

I use the ICE method, it keeps the motor cool, and doesn't get any water inside the case. You can use 1 or 2, 1 1/2 volt batteries and just let them run overnight. It really does make a differenct in performance of the motor. You don't have to use as much ICE as I did, that was overkill. Oh, WOW, I just thought of another IDEA. Just hook up the batteries to the motor, place it in a bowl and put it in the FREEZER overnight, no muss, no fuss, no mess.

Dave / Choppersrule
I used two rubbermaid can coolers to break in a DD motor If you stagger them just right(one on top of the other)the motors fit right between them.

Anyone notice shorter flight times with the G90 HH Gyro. I dont know if my battery is going down hill or what. Have a 1250 Lipo and had easy 20 minutes before the gyro install
Not that I usually fly that long but I flew less than 15 and the battery wimped out. Only had it in Idle up for 2 or 3 minutes tops. New Main motor 370 Stock on the pro Has the right pinion and motor.

oracus,

I like that idea. I've been using some cold compress pack with a similar idea. However, it can be tricky to bury the motor in the pack with out having the pinion rub. Sounds like you got a winner with the rubber maid freezer packs.

fossoman,

I get about the same flight time using the stock 11.1v 3 cell 800mAh E-Flite LiPo on either my stock CP Pro or CP Pro with G90... about 10-12 mins.

My TREX's flight times are 6-7mins using a 11.1v 3 cell 2150mAh DN Power LiPo. Using my G2 DN Power charger I've been charging to 4.2v and discharging to 3.6v.

Day 2 of 4 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

been flying as much as possible. some wind came up in the early afternoon, but not enough to ground the TREX.... just made it a little trickier to fly.

One of my buddies, that I've been flying CX2 with, fried his ESC the other day. From what he said, after a pretty bad crash, the battery came flying through the front canopy and pulled the JST connection right out of the 4in1. He tried to solder it back, but must have arced the connections for when he plugged in a LiPo, SNAP, CRACKLE, POP!

Rather then fixing up his CX2 he decided on the next step, a Blade CP Pro. Murphy's Law, in less then an hour his first set of blades down the drain. During the pre-flight control check, he accidently bumped the throttle and the heli jumped right off the table and SMACK DOWN right to the floor. I recommend he buy a set of spare sym wood blades and training gear with the heli. A quick change out and he was back in business. No other damage.

I get a call a couple hours later asking if I had a spare tail motor. His story, "while skidding around at the park, the tail rotor and a pine cone got into a fight....needless to say the pine cone won!" Luckily, I had a spare tail motor so he came right over. After changing out the bad tail motor, we spooled it up and the heli was back in the air. Seems this time he tweaked the feathering shaft or main gear, as there is a slight wobble on the head but still flyable.

just thought I'd share his first day experiences with the rest of the group!

Hello All!

I hope my southern neighbours are enjoying thier long weekend! Up north here we had ours last week, so this is just a regular weekend for us. Even though it's a regular weekend, we're getting some really nice weather. Today we've had a pretty decent day, with a bit of wind... enough to make the Blade zip up or down 5-10 feet if you hit the right angle.

After dinner, I managed to pack the family up and head to the soccer field for a bit of stick time. Tried to get the wife to shoot some video from a different perspective - zoom out a bit more to show speed, and height as well as flying. Managed to get a half hour or so of footage, and put together a [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx1G1VL3fjc]5 minute video[/link]. I'm not sure what I like better - the close up shots, the far back shots or an equal mix.... I was never very good at the "production gig".

At any rate, the Blade is working awesome - still on the first set of motors. I'm glad I'm off those wood blades. The carbon fiber blades perform much better... I just have to keep away from the fence and anything else that might shatter them. I got a bit close to a light post tonight. They also make a better sound when you make a sharp turn over your head.... you can really hear them dig in.

One thing I did notice, is that the stock motor does seem to lack power at times. Sometimes I want to climb out fast as I'm drifting, or being pushed into the deck by the wind, and punching the throttle, and/or collective just seems "soft" at times. Maybe I need to start flying the CP Pro and set the CP on the shelf for a while and see how much of a difference it is. I've been trying to stick with one or two helis while learning, as it's easier to repair one or two than have them all busted up.

It's nice to hear some of you guys are progressing and getting in some stick time this weekend. Sorry to hear you're still having problems Crash... I know you'll get them worked out.

Well, look at it this way. At least when she comes home you'll have something to show her! I'm sure she will be just as pleased knowing that you are learning, and will perhaps, be making less trips to the hobby store for parts

Thanks for the encouragement and you're correct about the fast progression. With the memorial day weekend and the girlfriend out of the country I have been able to get in a lot of flights. I have had a few long hovers around 5 min keeping it in the area of a handicap spot. Even was able to do some soft landing on the symbol. Wheeeeeee Blade CP Pro is getting to be a lot of fun.

Yeah, it is pretty discouraging at first when it seems like everytime you go out to fly you crash and break something. I got to experience that a few times the first day I had my first heli. After that it was a lot of reading, RADDS, and a simulator for a while before I decided to try things out again. If you ask me (and, again, I'm no expert), but you've done the hard and expensive part. Now if you just take your time, and practice there is a good chance you won't break too much more, and you'll progress well. I wasn't very good at taking that advice and pushed myself too hard a few times and paid for it in repairs... my poor 1st 22E ended up with more CA glue and thread on it than plastic.

For a new pilot, I believe the BEST practice for orientation is using a simulator... any one will do... that alone will save you a fortune when you go to learn side in, and nose in hovering.

I agree and my take on the simulator usage is mentioned in the post on another thread on the Blade CP. [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5901319]Post is here[/link]

EMISSIVITY: I didn't make that up(Yuk-Yuk). It has to do with specific gravity of each material, density of the material, etc.

Example: The motors on a DD may have two different casings, one polished and one not polished. When using a Infrared Heat Gauge, even though they are exactly at the same temperature. The Heat Gauge may read 5 to 10 degrees different, because of the emissivity.
That's why it good/mandatory to take readings of each object, before and after testing to get a very accurate variance in temperature.

MY TEMPERATURE GAUGE:

It's a TGX1, used by O'Donnell Racing and has a function to change the emissivity value. However, it's a pain, only because you have to know the emissivity of the object you're taking temperatures of. That's why it's easier to take a reading before and after, to verify difference in temperature.

All the above holds true with all Infrared Temperature Gauges, they just don't tell ya about it.

Below is a link on some of the emissivity charts.. Every object has a little bit of variance.. It's all Science.

Link: http://www.omega.com/literature/tran...issivitya.html

Hope this helps ya,

thanks for the link and the good gee wiz info. It was all a very interesting read for me, and I learned a new word =)

on another post someone talked about these batteries. They say they can be discharged to 2v per cell with no perminant damage, so cutt offs and timers are a thing of the past, or so they say. Seems like there has to be a catch. What they are saying just doesn't add up to me, it partly sounds like a TV infomercial. I mean do they have the technology, and that is just how they are marketing it? Or are they streching the truth and making it sound like the miracle battery pack of the future?

Back to Serious now..

Air Thunder Battery:

Throwing out the cost for any battery and just chewing data.

I went to the web site, and watched their 9 minute video of someone flying a TREX 450 for 9 full minutes, that's a windfall. Very good for the Trex on one charge.

I believe that the company is rather new and so is the technology behind their product.. I believe their batteries will do as advertised.
Technology advances so rapidly in the electronics field today, it make your head spin.

Currently, they have only 6 batteries available and only 1 that is 11.1 volts at 2200 mAh. The weight of the battery is 6.7 oz. or 190 grams. That would be pretty heavy for a CPPro. The Pro stock, without battery weighs in at 298 grams. Together that's 488 grams.

The size of the battery is 1.18 x 1.45 x 4.44 inches. I'm not sure that would fit in a stock CPPro battery tray, it would fit in the Super-Skids. See attached picture.. for comparison in size of a thunder power 2100 mAh battery(which is almost identical to the Air Thunder) and a E-flite 860 mAh battery.. Also, note that on the picture of the E-flite battery(alone) you'll see the Thunder Power logo.. Hmmm, does TP make the batteries for E-flite. (BTW, the pictures are lousy, but viewable. My photograhpy skills are limited to just pushing the button).

NOTE: The E-flite battery was manufactured on 1/09/06, purchased some time in May of last year, I couldn't begin to tell you how many charges are on it, but I still get a solid 10 minutes of flight time.

I have to be honest. Today I got more stick time on my T Rex v2 then in a months worth of owing the CP Pro. You all have no idea how much fun flying is vs repairing these things. I'm not telling you to run out and buy one just sharing my experience. What a great day. Mike

Lookyj,

I may have taken Mrsamm's post, as being a boost for the Blade series. I concur, that this battery, the Air Thunder would be ideal for the TREX Series.. I think I may do a little more research and get one for my TREX. Most of the 2100 mAh batteries on a TREX will only get 6-7 minutes of flight, that seems to be normal.

Mike,

I have to agree with you 100%. No comparison, to the Blade and the TREX. I'll say it for you, if it's in the budget, get a TREX.
However, I do like the Blades for bad weather, then I can practice in the basement or garage. So far, with the Blade and the TREX, two weeks and no mishaps to either heli.

Just a quick question. I noticed that the recommended storage temp is -10 degrees to 40 degrees. Is that fahrenheit or celsius?
Man, I had a hard time with spell check on both of those! Should LiPo's be kept cold or just at room temp?

so all this talk about sims has me taking another look.

FS One with DX7 spektrum interface seems pretty appealing. I can use my DX7 on the sim to fine tune the settings.. before taking my heli out.

that sounds pretty good!

just wish I could use it on my PowerBook G4 running MAC OSX.

what sims are you guys using?

I tried the Pre Flight Blade CP series when I first got my CP Pro, but had trouble getting it to work on my machine. I tried the install on my Dell.

what are you guys using?

I like the idea of being able to use the same controller that I use with my actual helis (DX7)!

I'm not sure if the DX's work with Aero Fly Pro Deluxe, but I love it and fly it almost everyday. My dad has G3 and I don't like it as much as AFPD. My LHS has FS1 and I usally spend some time on it, but again I prefer AFPD. I would put FS1 or G3 though.

Just my 2 cents

God Bless!

I'll answer your question with a question....what happens to a car battery or flashlight if you store it in the cold? Answer is...it goes DEAD. I would say 45degF to not much over 100degF would be the ball park. I charge mine and leave them in a 65deg area for extended periods...like now because my heli is down, and I put a fresh charge on before I fly.

Hey men............. my vote for lookyj on the sim is FSOne...although they don't have a TREX......they do have a wireless hookup module for the DX6/7............. you bind it to your TX, and can use your own Spektrum TX to fly thier closest model to the TREX. You can copy and edit any model they have and tune it to closer to your own. Don't ask me how because I am a lil under the wild turkey weather right now, but will research more in the AM and give mor3e detailed info!
BTW........crash, YOU are the man! You did me a sweet deal and this whole forum should know what a good man you are! Just for everyones info........... I spoke to crash in PM's and openly about wanting to expand my horizons in the RC world. Meaning I asked him for advice on what kind of beginner plane to get......... the man has rebuilt and sweetened a J3 cub for me and has shipped it for a unheard of price! That is what I call Band Of Brothers if I may steal Barricks saying. That is what is so great about this particular thread......even though we all live hours apart, it's like we are all joined in a brotherhood unlike any other. Try getting the kindness and helpfullness on the freeway in rush hour traffic........ I usually get the bird....and angry grimaces..........heh

Love ya guys.......and thats not just the Turkey talkin! Ok......mebbe a lil.....but still.......yer all good!

arrow,

I agree, this thread has a great group of guys always willing to help out a fellow rc junkie!

Definately leaning toward FS One, but I hate to hear they don't have a TREX model...

DAY 3 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Today was a day filled with carnage! well actually, the gremlins came out last night just after midnight during a late night flight with the TREX SE.... I already broke the first two rules when I spooled her up. 1) don't fly at night, and 2) don't fly when you're drunk.

I was very lucky! After losing sight of the heli around the neighbors front lawn, I cut the power hoping for the best! Fortunately, the only damage was a broken horizontal stabilizer (which doesn't affect the flight of the heli). The CF version for SE was $15.00. Not bad, my first crash on the TREX $15 and purely as cosmetic fix.

However, I was not as lucky today. Seems both my CP Pros are down, along with one of my CX2's. The Blade series helis can not handle the wind! Seeing how pretty much all day today the wind was blowing at about 10mph. I probably shouldn't have been trying to fly them in these conditions, but I needed something to fly between charges and the TREX seemed to handle the wind fine.

I also burned through 2 sets of rear tires with my modified mini-T Pro with 370 motor. But the major damage came when I hit a crack in the pavement at top speed and sent the car end over end about 15 feet down the road. I broke the rear right hub connection, dogbone axel, and steering servo!

a few beers and some time on the work bench, hopefully I have everything back up by tomorrows BBQ.

Sounds like an interesting day (LOL). I had wind 18 gusting to 28mph today...nothing flew. Did a little bench work on the Corsair and did a static highpower turn...ready for a balmy 6-8mph wind we're supposed to have tomorrow. I tinkered with the CP-Pro to no avail. Got about a 3.5ft hover red light just a glow'in....darnnit. Waiting for a new motor. Corsair will go up tomorrow.

arrow,

I agree, this thread has a great group of guys always willing to help out a fellow rc junkie!

Definately leaning toward FS One, but a hate to hear they don't have a TREX model...

I broke the rear right hub connection, dogbone axel, and steering servo!

a few beers and some time on the work bench, hopefully I have everything back up by tomorrows BBQ.

the OLD ONE with a tiny but FUNNY update :

drove 300 miles to Dallas to fly in a special HobbyShop up there that has all INDOOR FACILITIES and SPACE, "dedicated" to Electric Helicopters.... it was a TOTALLY AWESOME experience for me, who never gets to see anybody else with helis.

My CX-2 was the object of MUCH attention ..... now with the Blue shell fuselage and the blue aluminum boom ! .... Soon as I started flying it, several came around and wanted to find out how come it flys so well. I was even landing it on a seat next to the tracks that was not much bigger than 1 foot square. Upon request I repeated that stunt sucessfully for times . Somehow, this CX-2 must be so much better than the standard was,,, that it caught their eye. Basically and truthfully, besides NOT going inverted it does EVERYTHING a helis should do, maybe not Banking in the Turns, but all else, and it was mentioned how SMOOTH it goes.

Tried to start up the CP-PRO to try it under such IDEAL CONDITIONS ..... and the M O T O R B U R N E D U P !!!!!!!!!! drove 288 miles just ... ........to get my FIRST FAILURE with the BLADES - [ that is the "funny" but sad part of this story.].....so my GoldBrick got busted ( CRASH CRASH take note ) and I am now just another regular guy with failures - ha ha (sob )

With the help of my friend : I am now TOTALLY READY ( he did all my soldering - SORRY CHOPPERSRULE DAVE - I squelched out of soldering ) to finish up my TEST PLANES for proofing the DX-7 and the 6100 RX and ALSO to begin putting together the REX..

moving forward here . .... slowly ..... hey I'm old []

THE KIND FOLK IN DALLAS GAVE ME THIS TO SHARE WITH MY BRO HOMIES WHO DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT :

BIG BIG PS for ALL MY BROS. if you don't know about this : GO TO THIS SITE : WWW.RUNRYDER.COM THOUS SHALT BE VERILY AMAZED...............

Barrick,

sounds like our friend Murphy was handing out the gold bricks again!

Seems like a common issue with the Blade CP's. I agree with the CX2, E-Flite really hit a winner with this little heli! But still it's a coaxial.

Wait till you get the TREX flying!

any pics from Dallas?

LOOKYJ - HI ! - no pics from Dallas - when in Europe I disocovered that the MEMORY for my SONY camera is now not available ( old) in less than two years. W/O memory I had no camera to take to Dallas. It is a place really worth photographing. I saw several REX's one flown by an 11 year old and his Dad. Also saw the final workings done on a 600 REX about to be maidened, right there. Couldn't stay long enough to watch. Boy, that ""600" is HUGE, at least -maybe more than double the size of the 450. [[[[ ps my CARD is about to be installed (the one that will digitize my DV tapes !! YEAH ! )]]]]]

SPEC.REPORT FOR CRASH-CRASH : hey VIC ! coming back with all parts soldered, I just now installed/set up the whole system in the CESSNA. Lit up the DX-7 and with shaky hands connected a 2S LIPO.
IT WORKS GREAT !!!! and I have witnessed the DARN FASTEST SERVOS I have ever seen ( JR 285 ) will finish up connecting the flying surfaces and putting on the prop will be ready TO MAIDEN the DX-7 SYSTEM, the 6100 RX and the 4 285 SERVOS that will go into the REX....... not taking "any chances" when I go up with this very expensive heli. Of interest to you , because we both do planes : if you use more than 3 servos in a plane, you better go to DIMENSIONENGINEERING and look a their PARKBEC..... it is specific for ParkFlyers that supplies 1.25A continuous to all the servos. It is an EXTRA INSURANCE to prevent voltage consumption.
go to : https://www.dimensionengineering.com ----------------look for the PARKBEC or maybe the SMARTBEC if it applies to your models.

hey HOMIE BROS : I missed y'all in Italy, my old stepDad let me use his PC BUT I FORGOT THE PASSWORD TO ENTER RCUNIVERSE and write to y'all......RICK...[:@]
