We finally got to the point where there was nothing left to do except put this engine/plane in the air and see what happens. I'm pleased to report it was a total success to the point where it was darn near a non event! Made 3 flights, started on first flip every time, ran like a Swiss watch! I was a little concerned about power, but found it to be comparable to the G62 after a couple laps of the field in my opinion. Wow factor from the crowd was off the charts.

IOW... so far, so good!

It's a kit built TF P47 put together many years ago and is "well weathered". I look at as a $1000 engine dragging a $200 plane around! LOL

I picked up a large ARF Ugly stick knock off at Toledo swap meet to fly my Saito and get some airtime on the engine before it get buried in the nose of a scale plane.
The airplane will stand as my engine break in plane for future engine adventures.

Great thread guys!
Based on your cumulative operating experience, what size fuel tank do you recommend?
The manual says 30cc/1 ounce per minute at full throttle. Based on 50% throttle setting a 12 ounce tank should be good for more than 15 minutes of flying.

What do you recommend?

You could probably get by OK with a 12 oz tank, but I'd suggest a 16 just to be on the safe side. I've got a 24 oz tank in the P47 for no reason other than that was just what was in there with the previous engine. I don't know the exact amount, but I was surprised how little I put back in after 15+ minutes of flying around at 50-75% throttle most of the time.

I use a 16 oz tank and it is more than enough. I burn about a third to half of a tank on 10-12 minutes of flying at moderate throttle settings.

Default Is the Fuel Tank Location an Issue?

Great feedback!
Is the Saito sensitive to tank location?
I'm thinking of mounting my tank back on the CG so I have more room for my cockpit detail.
The distance is about 8 inches back from the normal position.

I used a 17 oz tank -- so I am in line with Brian... Brain convinced me my initial 24oz tank was too big...

Thanks Galen!
It's for my Lizzie.
I'm looking to move the tank back to the CG so I have more room for my cockpit.
Have you run your FG60 yet?

What size baffle did you order for the cowling?

Thanks!

I kept mine as far forward as I could because somewhere on this thread I read that the carb does not draw the fuel strongly.
Is Lizzy a Lysander? That's what Galen has.

So... after a long wait I have received my replacement ignition harness. Gave up on RCjapan, got one from Germany... go figure. Instant results!!!! No. 3 cylinder firing as it should, dropping out at idle but chiming in at higher revs.
This engine is now running as it did pre-crash.
Now it decision time. Do I cut my losses (and they will be severe!!!) and sell it, or do I build a new model for it. I won't build a replacement TF Zero because I have moved to a new flying field that just isn't big enough for that large a warbird.
Leaning towards selling!!!!

I know how you feel. I'm in a little over $2000 in my FG60 now.

Yup... I'm in for over $1500, with the mods and Keleo ring, and Ray is the only one to ever run it! Hope to have it in a 50cc Yak before too long... now waiting on the new PowerSafe receivers to land.

Alfiev, am in the same boat. Since the repair I did not fly much. Now I've got my self a used Zenoah 62 and planning to replace the fg60 as I am nearly certain it will break again. There will be few club events where I would like to fly the saito next month, after that it will be sold.

I read through this entire thread " lots of reading" and I'm still considering picking an fg60 up soon. There's lots of great info here but also lots of speculation as far as reasons for failures. Honestly I'm 50/50 on spending lots of coin on an engine with the history of this one. Has anyone had or heard of more issues with the engine recently? This will be my first radial, I've had many engines from .049 to turbines but this is an entirely different animal and I'd like to be as prepared as possible. I definitely appreciate the info supplied here, if this thread didn't exist then I probably would have bought the engine without a problem, probably break it in wrong and end up with a $$$$ paper weight. What do you guys think Yes/No?

Great to hear you have success!! Although I have been scathing of Saito's lack of after-sales service and extremely frustratingly bad distribution policies I will willingly admit that the engine powered my TF Zero beautifully and didn't miss a beat.

Long may the successes continue for you!!

I've got a half dozen flights on my combo now. First two were really running great but I was a little concerned I was running to lean, so I fattened it up a little and went to far and wound up not getting up to full power on the rest of the runs. I just ran it on the cradle and got it tuned up again, so I think were good. I like the way this carb responds, but it's a bugger to tune with a capitol B! One click goes a long way so it seems. Still using 100LL @ 15:1 Klotz. So far I see no reason to change that. Cylinder temps seem to stay within 30 deg of each other with No2 being the hottest. Hope to get a few flights in during the next few days.

I put one in a Spacewalker for a friend and it has been great in five flights. Keleo exhaust but no baffles, they are not needed on this setup. It is getting fuel per Ray English instructions and will not be run lean ever. I expect it to last a very long time. I'm now putting a 30cc version on a 4 Star for the same guy and expect the same results. I've been running model engines from .010 to 80cc since I was about 4 so while this radial is a new critter for me if it were junk I'd realize it by now.
