Tom is a great guy. His JXF props and DL spinner have really impressed me. He compensated for a misdrilled prop with a brand new one.

Try a Vess prop. Vess 23B, MTW RE2 pipe, 7160rpm, 32lbs thrust.

Hi, quick report back. The pop off has been tested with proper gear. It was not popping off unitil 31.5psi! I am more than a little disapointed that the DL50 was supplied to me like that. It has been reset now to pop off at 15psi. The guy in the ski shop said that i was lucky the motor had not been damaged. I will try the motor tonight, and report my findings.
So hows your engine doing now?

WOW! is all I can say.
Got my DL50 this week from DL Australia.com. It's a great engine and I was pleasantly surprised that I got a bunch of small spare parts with it which was most unexpected. I have put 2 liters through it and find that it is running better and better. The engine was supplied with 2 plugs, both Chinese no name brand which seem to have a very short life before they start missing and running bad. Is this normal? Are they crap plugs or am I just unlucky?

They are just crap plugs. Get a NGK CM-6.

Ran about half gallon fuel through her. Ground idle is about 2100 smooth. 1/4 to 1/2 stick during take off coughs and sputters. During flying as well. Full throttle flying engine sounds good. Just 1/4 to 3/4 throttle it's not smooth. Stock settings it stayed running. So far I've leaned out the Low and High 1/8 turn. Can anyone help me out here. I want to get it right. Running 32:1 Lawnboy. Thanx.

Sounds like your idle is soaking rich.

1. Run engine hot;
2. Adjust HS needle for max rpm, back off 100-200rpm or open HS 1/16;
3. Close LS 1/16 at a time until engine starts surging increasing rpm. Open LS 1/8;
4. Repeat step 1-3 at least once;

If the engine then still sputters during flight, be sure there's a hole in the firewall for the carb to vent properly. And you can put a piece tubing on the carb's vent and run a line into the fuselage. That will smoothen the mid range out further.

Thanx. That all makes sense. Only my second gasser. First one I sold after I realized it wasn't big enough for my Cap. 40cc. Wanted a little more oomph. Manual says not to do these adjustments while engine is running? If I have another person that's not an issue right? I can turn the screws a tad at a time while it's running? Also.. Manual says it should get 6700-7200 rpm. So what should I be shooting for? 6700 or 7200!? Then backing off 100-200. Thanx.

DLs DO have a Noisy Mid Range...
They may sound rich but are fine... [8D]

You can safely adjust the needles when the engine is running w/o cowling. Tune for max rpm on a 22x8 break-in prop and back off 100-200rpm or open HS 1/16.

It's on a Great Planes Giant Big Stick. No cowling.

WOW!
Engine starts with 3 flips.
Vibration was really strong and after the 3rd 15min breakin it started to go away.

I may assume you did a good job balancing the prop? If it starts to easily especially after a at least 30 minute pause, the LS is for sure too rich.

Had mine out flying today. Very impressive. Very little vibration. The only thing I have is some missing in midrange but that might be because my needles are still a little too rich. Also could be that I need to plumb my carb vent to the fuse or somewhere less gusty than the cowling. This thing has a TON of power on the stock exhaust. Pull out of a hover is very impressive on a 17#, 4.5 ounce PAU Edge. Starting is effortless and needs choke if it cools off to the outside temperature completely.

IMO low needle should be set so that the engine bogs slightly while it's warming up. Then after it warms up it should snap right up. I have mine very rich for break in. I only have a half gallon of Pennzoil 32:1 through it. The transition is instant. I had a DA 50 that would dead stick while inverted at idle every single time. I tested this in a few waterfalls and inverted elevators and it didn't miss a beat. It's unreal that I spent $300 LESS on this engine to fix that problem.

Here is a question for all ?

If you go to a larger prop do you re-ajust carb mixures more lean or rich ?

thanks.

Depends on how accurate the mixture was before hand..a little rich, or right on...etc More load will cause the cylinder to run hotter, and readjustment would be wise.

Hey guys, been running my DL50 now for awhile and runs great. I was wondering if anyone is running a silent beauty muffler on their DL. My club is starting to enforce the 96db rule and I am over by about 4db. I am running 22x8 JFX prop and a pits style mufler. I need to figure something out. I know justby switching props wont work. I saw these silent beauty muflers advertised on TBM. Anyone with any experience or knowledge on these muflers or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Used the Tricycle gear configuration. 15-25 knot winds in Key West every day, and taxi is non-existant with a tail dragger. If you're into DL/DA50's, this is a great break in platform.

Where did you put the fuel tank? Is it in the front or back under the wing?
I did the same sort of thing with my Fuji. I used to have an OS 1.60 on it.

I have a new DL I need to break in an I would love to do it on my stick. I'll have to find some 6" wheels to get enough prop clearence to do it.

The fuel tank is moved back further than the stock gas configeration. I marked the center of the fuel tank, and put the center of the tank directly over the recommended CG. Both the ignition and receiver batts are directly behind the fuel tank. With the DL50 tricycle gear configeration it balances about 1/2 inch behind the stock CG of 150mm. So slightly tail heavy. It is a beast. I take off at 1/5th throttle, 25ish feet, at rotation it climbs vertical unlimited at that stick position! I use the stock wheels, and get only 2 inches of ground clearance with the prop. I fly off of concrete though. Grass might not work without the 6 inch wheels.

Where do you fly in Key West, my wife and I are going to drive down there later in November. I would be fun to see some flying in the wind while we are there.

I had a GBS with a Zenoah G45 with EI and I thought it was over powered, but fun to fly. I can't image the plane with a DL50.

Chuck.. We fly on a Navy Base. I'm in the Navy, and the club President of the "Southern Most RC Flying Club". I would have to sponsor you on, but that's no problem. Let me know and I'll give you my number. We fly weekends and holidays in the AM from 9-12ish. Over powered? HA! That's a sin to even say such a thing.

I just ordered my DL-50 from Bob at DLUSA and it should arrive by wednesday. I will be putting it on an 85" Yak 54.
And I plan to break it in with a xoar 22x8 and later change to the Vess 23b. Based on all that I have read about this engine, I and really excited about getting it.
