Some ignitions suffer and offer poor or inconsistent performance when voltage drops, using 6v fixes some, that is, the ones that are said to be capable of running 6v. Also having the extra cell in case of a cell failure adds a bit of redundancy.

I dont think its fuel that you can smell, but the oil they are using for assembly/protection of the engines.
It does smell quite strong, seems like some sort of air tool type oil or similar being used.
Cheers

FlyingGreg,
I have two DL50's now and would highly recommend it. Excellent value for the price. Your Aeromaster will go vertical out of sight with the engine. Get someone at your field to help you get it running and tuned.
Chuck
Guys--I haven't read the entier 21 pages of this thread, but I am contemplating a DL 50 for my Giant Aeromaster. Also looking a BCME 53--about the same cost. What are you opinions? BTW--AUW of the GP G Aeromaster is about 18 lbs. Not a 3D plane but good for general flying aerobatics. It is my first gasser.

So did I but with a 3oz tailwheel I still needed the weight. Mind you, with the DL-50 in it it really didn't make a difference to the airplane's performance!!!

If it flies the way you want as it is this doesn't matter...

To be honest it flies just great! It will do all of the 3D maneuvers even though it is really an IMAC plane. I have another plane for learning 3D on. A WH Edge 540T V2 that is probably the most stable plane I've ever flown. I plan on using this one to learn/practice IMAC maneuvers and play around with a bit. Even so, with the DL in it it has more then enough power for anything you'd want to do with it.
Here's the culprit that caused all of the fuss!

I probabley ran 1/2 of a gallon through it today. I am a little over 1 gallon breaking in. The engine is running much better every flight. I leaned out the low end alot today and transition got much better in the air. At the moment, if I pop the throttle from idle to WOT in the air the engine usually doesn't have much of a problem transitioning. But with a slow throttle transtion it has trouble getting to full throttle. I am going to conntinue to lean out the low end. BTW, richening it makes it worse. Hopefully the midrange will get better as it breaks in. My RPM's are still low however, it is turning right around 6700 peak on a xoar 22-8. Still haven't tried a new tach and the batteries were low on the tach i was using. That is around 25 pounds of thrust acording to my thrust calculator. Still pretty good for a 13.5 pound plane. I am hoping to maybe get in the 27-28 pounds of thrust range after it fully breaks in. Again, i don't have much fuel through her so.......

That is so weird because i leaned it untill i started loosing RPM's then richened it back a click. It was turning just around 6700. Again, i need to see what numbers i can get with a different tach.

Just set the top end to max rpm and richen it half the width of the screw slot. You may be way lean and have to richen it quite a bit, but you want max rpm regardless of the way you have to move it. You can adjust the low end for the transition. When I first got mine I did just the opposite and it tuned great but now I have to tune it this way to get it right.

I believe the manual says 1 3/4 turns out for the high end and 1 1/2 for the low end. Just remember, very little movement makes a very big difference.

Check this plane out its from cermark. I'm gonna build one for my next dl-50. Check out the weight of it. 11.5. That edge would be nuts on a dl-50!!!

Paul,
Check this one out it has a 92 inch wing span and 1868 square inchs wing area, and at 16 to 17 pounds would be a blast to fly. I think i have found my winter project. Do any of you guys have one of these.

G'day Scott
Got my engine and 2 props from ya today - awesome product and fantastic next day service. Its going into a GP Yak-54. Just one question, do you have any photos of the recommended linkages for the choke and throttle? I'm new to gassers so its a bit of a mystery to me. Cheers mate

Theres also some info from Aerobob somewhere on using an old hitec blue servo arm on the throttle...thats what i use...and works perfect.

Paul, It's a profile plane that they've widened the front of the fuse on to get the engine inside. Trying to attract more people to profiles I guess. Definately strange looking. Should fly like a profile though.
Here's the original post I did on the blue choke arm. Bob has one very similar on his web site. Sorry about the poor picture quality but it's a Casio Exilm and if it's got a macro setting, I can't find it.

For all of you Walbro carb users out there that are getting carbs with that useless little steel arm stamped on the choke rod, (and in the wrong position) here's a fix. The Hitec HS-5645MG servos come with a nice little aluminum servo arm that's even anodized a pretty blue. Due to its size it's pretty much useless for anything but a throttle servo. If you snap that little pressed on arm off of the top of the choke rod you can drill the Hitec arms hole out (above the spline) to .185" and then run a #29 (.089" drill through the side. Then you can tap the side hole with a 4-40 tap and install the arm onto the choke rod and secure it with a 4-40 set screw. Problem solved and no extra cost for so-called custom made arms.

Update:
The throttle wasn't opening all the way like I thaught. I gained an extra 200rpms as a result. Am floating between 6850 and 6900 with a xoar 22-8. With less than 1 gallon through it. I hope to get around 300 rpms more as it breaks in.
