Update on my wing progress: Lat night I glued all of the aileron and flap ribs to the leading edge as well as getting all of the hinge blocks in place. Wing tip has been laminated and is awaiting its place on the wing. Should be completed with the right wing in a few more days!
How about a few more favorite tool photos guys! It's good to share...

You can pick them up at Hobbylinc for $21.09. Ship it USPS and the total comes to $27.04.
Anybody else find it cheaper? I wanna get one!

My box of building tools is pretty light as I'm new to it, but I have to say that after a #11 blade and sand paper, my pin vise and set of small Dremel bits gets a lot use drilling holes for motor mounts, flying wires and hinge points.
**Even better, our local RCBuyers has it for $25.99!

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Hi VJ, Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply to your question re the wing tip to aileron transition. It has been a couple of weeks since I last logged into your site. Unfortunately I did not take any close up pics of that area at the time, apart from the one I posted along with some others on page 6. Now that the wing is covered I am unable to respond to your request, sorry. As I recall it was simply a matter of building up with balsa and then sanding back to the required aerodynamic shape once the ailerons were hinged to the wing.

Hi VJ, Just noticed that you are working on the landing gear blocks. Sometime earlier you mentioned that you were considering fitting the Robart robostruts as I have fitted to mine. If you are going to install these you will need to purchase them first as you will need to modify the positions of the mounting blocks to the wings so that these struts can be custom fitted. Fitting these Robostruts allowed me to rake the undercarriage foward by about 1 inch which I hope will help with the problem of nose overs on landing, particularly on our clubs grass flying field that at times can be a little long!

Quick question: Did the ST-A use any landing lights? If so, where were they located, and what type? Same for the Navigation lights.

Hopefully somebody that knows can answer you Bill. I didn't see any on the planes that I have seen.
Since the weather here is lousy, ( rainy, windy and cold ) and flying is not possible I will try to get in the workshop all day today...
Update on the right wing. Wing tip has been installed and all the hinge blocks have been glued and drilled for their respective hinges. I still haveto sheet the top of the wing and install all the servo mounts, then I can start to join the two wing halves together! Thanks to all that posted their build tool picks. It's always nice to see what other modelers are using.

Bill,
The Ryan did not come equipped with lights. If you are modeling a military version no lights. If you are modeling a restored civilain version then all bets are off.
Later!!

Spent the better part of the day in the workshop and I got all the hinging on the wing DONE! The aileron tip has been shaped and transitioned into the wing tip as well. These wings were a handful to build, but I have to saythey are really beautifull to look at, almost a shame to cover them up...Will go back down shortly to make the servo mounts. I really lose track of time when I'm working in the shop.

Last night I made the two aluminum servo brackets for the aileron and flaps. During it's contruction I had to use the disc sander to get the aluminum brackets sized properly. I kept my old 6" Grizzly disc sander just for metal working purposes, I can't believe what a difference their is between the Jet and Grizzly sander! What a piece of crap, how did I ever get along without it? Tonight I will make the four 1/32" ply reinforcement pieces for the landing gear mounts. Getting closer, will be back with photos soon... ( Had to rake a ton of leaves last night )

So glad you missed my pics! I didn't take any pics of the right wing Robert because it's just a duplication of the left side. If you want to see the right side I can take a few tonight.

OK here are some pictures! Various shots of the left and right wings. Servo bays are tight for the flaps, but doable. I am currently working on the 1/32" ply reinforcements for the landing gear mounts. these are time consuming to make as they are all hand filed to get the shape that I want, there are four of them and I have two more to make... Still a lot of sanding and shaping to do,

Really inspiring craftsmanship on those wings. You're really setting a standard for us newer builders to strive towards. Just another 20 years or so and maybe I'll get there. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Tim, always remember it's all about the journey and the pleasure we all get when we build, shapeand see our our creations take flight...it's what keeps me sane in a sometimescrazy world.
David, I think Solartex is a great choice, I'll be using it on this build as well. If you only have to paint the cowl and some other parts such as your landing gear you may want to consider the rattle can that Top Flight makes, it's called LustreKote paint and it comes in Cub yellow. I've used these paints before with some pretty impressive results. May be worth the 7 or 8 bucks to see if it will match the Cub yellow Solartex. just an idea....
Waiting for the glue to dry on the rib reinforcements, will post some photos later this evening.
