as far as the taxi issue with this plane.. i shimmed the gear and it would barely taxi on low rates at our grass feild. it did enough to take off, but the second flight i took off on high rates and it taxis much better like that.
i tried to get it to snap like everyone talks about and it will, if you don't have enough speed and slam the elevator up, it will snap out and do kind of an immelman. but with this thing weighing only around 6 pounds with fuel, it is really predictable and not an issue for me. with the balance just a hair aft of the recomended mark, i was able to get a decent flat spin. thats says a lot for this planes ability to flat spin, since i am not exactly a seasoned pilot yet. i was afraid to do 3d stuff down low, but even with the cg forward, it was relatively stable in a hover and i even got half a torque roll. this thing is very agile and you have to be watchful while on high rates. nothing unpredictable, but just very quick. the roll rate is very good with high rates. very axial too.

whaturi... glad to hear you had some fly'n w/ the new plane.. sounds like it gonna be a fun one. most of the agile planes tend to snap going slow and giving lots of elev, i think thats the norm
.... have fun w/ it ,and dont get to stupid w/ it down low [X(] it will last longer.. i'm at a busy time for next cpl weeks so probley wont get much done on it.. oh well think spring

Ok.....I'm really late to this thread..about 4 years by the look of it! Just started building my Giles. I got the tail-feathers and half a wing done. For power I have a brand new 61SF with a pitts muffler that was just colecting dust for about the last 15 or so years. This seemed like a good project for the engine, so here I am. I'm tryin to have it done for spring, being that I live in MN i should have plenty of time! Gonna take the next few hours or so reading through the last 4 years of posts and see if i can learn anything.

I hope to start covering this weekend. Will post photos. Thanks for the update. You are moving right along. I haven't had much time to work on it, but will this weekend. Before covering I did a wt/bal and mine will come out to about 6 1/2 lbs and need to place the battery in the rear.

Hello again i'm glad this thread is still going ,my giles is in the hanger waiting for the weather to break, its still one of my favorite planes to fly ,it will do anything I want it to plus Knife edges either way KE loops too and no coupling issues blenders are a blur but comes out a little nose down ,and the rolls are incredible I had to take some throw out ,although It will snap if looped to tight with out enough power but its easy to get back into control.I run a YS 91 FZ AC with a 14x8 I tried a 13X10 and didn't like the speedy landings that it had .The 14 throws more air over the wing and allows the plane to slow down to a almost crawl, with out any tip stalls.I did change the gear on mine to a glass type which lowered the plane some or I would have a 15X6 .Be warned about the control throws don't over throw the elevator or ailerons the rudder I max it .
This plane is not a beginners plane by no means ,but in the hands of a person with some flying time under there belt it can be a blast .One other thing with the set up I have this plane is fast, very fast I clocked my cap 232 at 124 MPH last year and the giles will eat it for lunch.
Thats the only prob I have it gets to small to fast *LOL* But all in all its a sweet heart of a plane, I back it off to around half stick and fly it .I hope you all enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Last but not least I did shim my gear about 1/8 to give more tail wheel pressure .Happy landings

i have not even decided on a cg yet, but i have moved it back pretty far. it is almost to the point that inverted flight requires very little "up". i have put it in knife ege position and see that it pitches towards the belly. this will be my first experimentation with mixing.
i am already seeing how agile this plane is though with snap rolls.. beautiful. flatspins are easy.. hovering seems a little twitchy until i get used to this plane. but i am coming off a ucd3d fomy.. so i am used to a plane that wants to hover.
yesterday my flying was cut short due to 25 mph wind gusts. while this plane can handle some wind, it can't handle a lot. one landing was at near zero airspeed. and it was getting blown all around.. no fun to fly like that.

Just in case someone else needs to move the battery back. The photos should show you what I did. It is very light, all of the items added only 14 grams and allows weight (battery) adjustment. Covering is next!

i tried the 15 6.. it was not as torky as the apc 16 4 spinning at 8400. it works, but for 3d stuff i like the 16 4. while i always could use more power, i do have to say that the saito 100 fits it very well. with the firewall engine thrust from the plans, this motor and prop combo is pretty much dead on for verticle. so that's nice.
for lateral balance with the saito 100 i found i needed 10 pennys in the left wing.

Winglift,
I like the cross members on your hatch cover. Thanks for posting. I've found some really good information in this forum.
Whaturi,
Congratulations on getting yours in the air. It looks to be one sweet flier.
Mine has most of the covering on it now. I don't know what it is, but I seemed to have developed this tendancy to try to outdo my last airplane (which was a beast to cover). I'm finding that the larger size of this one is making it more difficult to work with.
I left it off of the bottom covering for now so I could arrange things.
I'll post pictures when it's completed.
Dan

Is there any ground clearance issue on the prop with this plane and a 16" prop. I have the giles and need to finish it up and fly it. I am powering mine with the Magnum XLS 91a and probably a 15x4 wide apc.
#165
it's not the best plane as far as taxiing goes, but i use high rates on the ground so i can give full up elevator. the prop has plenty of room, as long as you keep the nose up.

hey guys, im getting really worried about my servos in this plane. i have all jr standard sports. i don't know much about servos, but i want to get some good metal geared servos.. what do you guys reccomend? i do not want to spend 80 bucks per servo but i do want to be able to trust them. when im down low with this plane and give full rudder to correct a hover, i cringe to think whats going on inside that sport servo case. and i had minis on the ailerons and one stripped out. luckly i caught it before i took off. so should i just go for the cheapest metal gear or is there more to it?

I really like the hitec metal gear servos. The hs625mg puts out a lot of torque and is quick.
Can someone post a picture of their rudder servo. I am trying to mount it in the tail of the plane, but don't know how to run the linkage. My servo horn doesn't seem to line up with the control arm on the rudder. Maybe I need to move the rudder horn????

I have heard that this plane has great rudder authority and is capable of a knife edge loop. I am trying to decide if I should use a hitec 625 or a 645 for my rudder? I will be running 6v battery pack, so the 625 may just be enough.

The large scale aerobatics people I've talked to like the Hitec. I've been using Futaba radio equipment, but I was planning on using the 635's (I don't know what that Karbonite is, but it should be between the nylon and the metal gears) on everything but the throttle. I'm also planning on a 6V receiver battery.
Make sure you didn't get a flutter. When that happens, it can damage other things (like your gears in your aileron servo) almost immediately.

You are running into the same problems that I did. As you can see, the geometry of the linkage is very awkward. I posted my solution to this problem.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

i got hs 625s. one for the rudder and one for the single elevator with pull pull. with the sport servo, my giles would NOT knife edge loop. im thinking i'll go 6 volts too. this plane is to good to under-servo.
