i hope they have seized. they have had a number of engines explode and i have seen one of these run and the vibration levels are out of this world. it may be cheap and a good idea for a cheap engine but unfortunatly from what i know it is not safe in the long run

Do tell. Or is this yet another made up story?

Easytiger with al respect could you tell me why al those people are complaining about their jetjoe turbine's?
Except a few like you? Or are you a Jetjoe field rep?
And how can an engine been test run with an rpm sensor not working, glowplug defect, and bent fuel lines?
This is not about jetjoe banging or something like that at all!!!
Their are just a lot people how have spent money on this turbine, expecting a proper engine!
And in FMT a german model magazine the jetjoe was testet........not suitable too use in an rc aircraft and being dangerous!!!!!!!
This is the last i want too say about Jetjoe....everyone is free too make up his one decison about this issue

No WAY he could run that engine!
Well, except if he changed the glow plug, unkinked the fuel line, and changed (or properly installed) the RPM sensor.
Do you need to borrow a plug wrench?

A guy at our club also bought a Jetjoe! It did not run!!!
Rpm sensor was defect right out of the box!! Glowplug was also defect.
Fuel lines where bent, and no fuel could pass!!
Bearings sounded strange.
No way he could run this engine, he is also a victim of mister P. from Germany who is on holiday for months now[:@]
My advise don't buy it! Spend a few bucks more and get an engine from a proper manufacturer!!!

Hi all
I have been reading these posts for sometime now, and I cant beleave what I'm reading. If jj turbines where manufactured in the USA everyone would be jumping on them real fast. But then again your not going to get a $600.00 turbine here. All you high horse high dollar jet flyers seem to forget the early turbines built in basements with very little tools steel and wood, soft flexable hoses. They worked they where flown. Because of this you high dollar people can enjoy the hobby. I wonder how many of you can strip down your turbine and replace parts or make new parts? not many I bet. Jetjoe turbines are good low dollar motors. Nice to see China manufacturing something besides pottery and doing a very good job. I'm looking forward to seeing some good things coming out of China.
I would say buy a jj turbine if it doesnt work send it back or fix it big deal. Put it in a plane, car or boat and have fun.
Now I worrie more about our Gov. controlling our turbines just as they control the rocket guys.
Just my three cents.[>:]

It's a $599 engine.
Let's see the german magazine test. Print it here.
Dangerous? How?
"All these people?"
Who? How many?
"Everyone is free to make up their own minds..."
Yes, and everyone is free to make up all the lies they want to help people make up their own minds, too?
I've heard so much baloney about Jetjoe it's just stupid already. People were saying right from the start, before even seeing one, that they were not made of Iconel, that people would get killed, yadda yadda yadda.
Now I hear people saying "many have exploded!"
"There is a GIANT LAWSUIT!"
Spit out some facts and firsthand experience, everyone will listen, until then, all it is is more internet nonsense.

We have had good turbines now for about 10 years so the news value is over of a real miniature Gas turbine.
And the price of a jet engine today is too high, i think that in the future we are going to get many cheap turbines from Taiwan Korea China etc.
So in maybe 10 years we don't have any manufactures in Europe USA.
"Don't eat me it is just a vision"

Well said easytiger.
I'm a home builder from way way back. I've built several FDs, KJ66 and Pheonix types that have been flown, along with converted turbochargers for go-carts. I'm more concerned with a spinning prop or ducted fan impeller spinning under my nose than with a turbine. The Dynamax pulse jet hmm loud hot 200mph round and round on 90' braided ss control lines gasoline for fuel never saw one blow up.
People being the way we are I guess this is to be expected. The same thing goes on with the experimental rocket guys. There are the guys who spend countless dollars on very high dollar rocket motors. And then theres the guys who build there own motors for pennies make there own fuel who are fround on the guys with deep pockets. The jet people think they spend a lot of money, try $50.00 to $1000.00 per flight. watch one of these blow up, big hole in the ground.
There are those who will bash the manufacture the first bypass turbine. WOW those big blades.
Hey maybe some day the early JJs and FDs and Pheonix, KJs and letsa not for get the Soffias will be collectors items . Sorry for the spelling.

Great to see some common sense prevailing. EASYTIGER, I like the way you put your point across - just say how it is!
I've always thought for a long time that there has always been a lot of elitism regarding jets - in fact I seem to remember a thread on JJ's with a suggestion that if you couldn't afford a turbine then you wasn't actually capable of running one safely!! Since when has ability been measured by how much cash someone's has? Simjet had many problems with their first turbines (I know, I flew their early engines), now they are regarded with esteem. JetJoe is going through the same process of trial and error, given time and opportunity they may be an excellent budget or even mainstream solution - I hope so, competition is always good for the consumer.

Never seen a JJ turbine, so can't answer all your questions, but can answer a few.
Printing the German magazine test article on RCU is what's called a copyright violation. If the magazine choses to post the article to the web, then someone could legally link to it, otherwise posting the article is a violation of the copyright holders rights.
Dangerous how? Well, I personally have seen hot wheels come apart and hot wheel blades punch the sides of the case, the sides of the airplane and keep going. Centripidal force at 160K RPM is huge which makes marginally constructed hot wheels dangerous. I personally considered a JJ turbine so I sent an email to both the factory rep in China and to Justin asking who certified their hot wheels and never got an answer from either. I decided (for you trolls, that means this is my personal opinion) they had something to hide, so paid the extra for a Wren instead just so I know I'd be getting a certified and tested hot wheel.

Also, your knowledge of copyright law is somewhat limited, you CAN quote a magazine article.
It's your choice as to what you want to buy, no problem. Pay more for a Wren, you will get a better engine and better support. Got the extra money? Go for it. Absolutely. You are NOT going to get the same quality and support from Jetjoe that you get from Wren.
Again..."Dangerous!" Right from the start, I have heard many people talk about how dangerous this engine is.
Yet...I have not heard of ONE actual case. Not ONE. NONE. Just some people telling lies. Prove me wrong.
On the OTHER hand...I HAVE heard of other major brands losing blades or seizing. Popular brands, too.

hehe, I have not read the article.
Just saw something about it in the german forums.
Im satisfied with mine at the moment, exept the starter, but that is easily fixable.
I also bought mine assembled, and tested from the UK, so I dont have those problems that poeple have when bought directly from the factory in China.

As I have written on another thread, I think much of this uncertenty stems from the fact that JJ has not spoken out for his motors, I do wonder about this. I did e-mail the USA rep. at jetjoe USA for some info a couple of days ago but havent got a reply yet. I did e-mail a rep. in the US a few weeks ago for some info and he got right back to me so the whole JJ info thing is a bit sketchy.

Their only actual "rep" in America is Simon To, in Forest Hills, NY. He's not a modeller, he's just a guy who handles some business for Jetjoe, shipping and such.
If you need an actual answer to something, talk to joe himself, [email protected] and you can usually get a pretty prompt reply.

Hi guys!
You have a cool discussion going on. I have joined the tests made for the FMT and took acouple of nice pictures. What is wrong with the engine?
First of all, it was delievered with a bad instruction, saying: change the pump, it is crap. change the starter-motor it is bs..... It comes with a certificate that it is test-run in the factory with a data-sheet about their test-run. But the cone on the engine was silver-polished metal. Never been hotter than 50°Celsius, so did they change the cone after test-run? Bet they won't.
Starting the engine was a night-mare and we never got more than 50.000 rpm out of the engine. The ECU didn't stop the pump after flameout, so we had nice smoking-system on the test-bench. Fuel was dropping out of the turbine-case after first run on kero, caused by a to small O-ring. Did I mention that the kero-pump is crapped, as it didn't work? Chnaged it to a Häusl-pump....
The temperature was definitely over 1000°Celsius during test-run, measured with a special sensor. Tail-cone was glowing in nice bright colours on a bright and sunny day, ECU didn't stop the engine. Is that enough? Oh no, you wanted to know why these turbines are dangerous, even if they still didn't kill anyone.
After these test-runs the engine was checked. The compressor-wheel was grinded on a very bad/unsafe spot. The turbine wheel has the "balance-ring" to grind during balancing. Problem is, that the chinese guys grinded the turbine-wheel just next to the blades. Now that is dangerous! And nobody knows why they did it, because the turbine was not ballanced. We just had to open half of the screws, because the rest was already loose, caused by big vibrations during test-run. But that is not surprising. They didn't drill the whole in the center. It was more than 2/10th centimeter off.....
After all, it was not just impossible to run the engine or get it in the air. This turbine is dangerous, because the guys have just copied a WREN-turbine, without knowing what they are doing and how a turbine is working. You can buy a turbine, but you don't buy the experience the guys from WREN, CAT, AMT or PST have made over the years, when they developed their engines.
I hope this helps. It is not a translation of the test-review, but most of what is intersting...
Best regards,
David Büsken

I guess some people will still cling to the ridiculous conspiracy theories though, and claim that all of the non-JetJoe owners banded together and said "We don't want those unwashed poor people to play in our sand-pit, so let's pay David lots of money to make up some baloney about the wonderful and unfairly maligned JetJoes"
With some people it doesn't matter what the facts say, conspiracy theories are much more interesting. [X(]

Hi Gordon!
No big deal. I just couldn't keep my fingers still after all the posts about the good turbines from China. It would have been to easy to mass-produce cheap turbines....
@Rafale: If you have that FMT-magazine, could you at least scan the pictures of the turbine-wheel with the nice "ballancing-marks"? I don't have them on my computer and no FMT at home... I will post some pictures of the test-runs later, when I am back home from work.
@EASYTIGER: So, your JetJoe is in the manufacturers specs? What do you mean with: You didn't follow the instructions? We did follow the instructions of the german manufacturer, just to be on the safe side. It wasn't actually written: you have to replace the parts. Otherwise it would have been his job to replace them if he is sure that they don't work at all. It was more like a good advice from a "friend".
After all I saw, I can just say: Yes, they are bad engineerd turbines with dangerous safety-problems which can't run to the manufacturer specs. It is not exactly the same, but doesn't change the facts: Don't buy them but if you already have one, please don't run it. I would say it is just good for experienced self-builders. But for them it is the worsed deal of their life

Hi,
If i were the manufaturer i would also not reply. Anything he say will be blown out of proportion.
What i can tell is that the motor reviewed have a story. This is not the place to comment since it effects the "german lawsuit". Secondly i read about turbine wheels grinded next to blade. You know what - i have a homebuild stainless steel turbine wheel with blades cut in by hacksaw and filed to shape. Must be a weapon of mass destruction. That Jetjoe wheel is such an old turbine wheel. We all know the first batch Jetjoe's were only good for homebuilders. This motor is not in production anymore. The JJ1200 MK11 is replacement.
Nobody ask anybody to buy Jetjoe. But do not bash a motor just because all facts are not know first. The Chineses will not go away. They will take over market. Its just a moment of time. Nobody can stop it. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
For more info stay posted cause i am on my way to Shanghai. Until then keep speculating.
Regards
