Default RE: Wasp update

Henry,

Can you provide your "Parameters" and "Manufacturers Settings"?
How old is your combustor can (is it the newest version)?
Do you have all of the ECU logs available (all five hours)?

Heatseeker_Hill,

What airframes are you flying?
How many Wasp's will you be demonstrating?
Can you also provide ECU logs?

In general:

I will be building four H20's this month for North American market testing.
Therefore, I am very interested in any data which you can provide.

I have been running my Wasp for many months now (22.8 hours, 232 cycles) on a test stand.
I have experienced all problems described and many more but that's what it takes to develop these incredible engines.
I have worked with Phill to debug many of the issues discussed in this forum.
Parts of the RCJI report were in fact my own words.

Our goal now, is to perform as many field trials as possible.
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You for your support.

I can send you my current and previous settings - no problem. Please pm me your private Email address. The RCU system tends to reject big enclosures. I will download current history but I bought it its own ECU(2nd hand) comparitively recently and some history may refer to its previous owner. With luck you will get 30-50 minutes.

I have a fairly old combustion can (circa Nov 2005). It is going really well in the evening but at midday in this really hot sunny weather it is flaminging out on acceleration. It is mounted on a Super Reaper

Thanks Ant - As you can imagine, my nickname was "Obiwan" during the seventies.

As for the Wasp... "The force is strong in this one"

We are continuing refine the Wasp. Our field trials this year will help us perfect our system.
Many thanks to all of our courageous test pilots!

The one main point that I wish to make is that you can expect the utmost in service from all of us at Heward Microjets and OBI Laser Products. We will back up our products 110%. You can count on that.

Have a Great Day!

I finally got round to bench running my factory-built Wasp autostart.
As expected it performed flawlessly. Hardly scientific but it sounded
terrific, and was obviously much more powerful than my old home built
(from the kit) MW54 mk1.

I had to back away from the bench when I throttled up as I wasn't wearing my ear
defenders so didn't get to check temp at full stick throttle (trim
centred), but did note rpm at 141,???.

Now to fit it to my Super Reaper. I fly off my own grass runways so
was reluctant to fly the Reaper with the old MW54 (I'm sure it would
have been fine, but for me more power = easier flying). The extra
power should enable me to get airborne quickly and safely.

The autostart Wasp comes with everything you need and is a doddle to
set up. I am very pleased.

....Have the low power/high fuel consumption issues been successfully addressed ?

The issue of "low power" was actually a problem with high temperatures (even at max RPM the temp should remain below 740 C).
The new combustor has resolved that (Bill's engine does have the new combustor).
The Wasp has never had a problem with "high fuel consumption".
In fact it has always been slightly more efficient than most (~240 ml/min @ 18 lbs thrust).

At 141 krpm, Bill should be seeing about 16.5 pounds thrust.
At 145 krpm, you will get roughly 18 pounds and at 150 krpm you should get about 20 pounds thrust.
I recommend limiting the top end to 145,000 rpm.
Also, I highly recommend using top quality, high temperature, synthetic turbine oil (BP 2197, BP 2380, Aeroshell 560, etc.).

ROB
The June/July issiue of RCJI quotes fuel consumption of 276 ml/min at maximum RPM Vs Manufactures claims of 261ml/min.

The maximum thrust failed to reach over 16.5 lbs Vs claims of 18-20lbs

However it managed its maximum RPM of 148,000.

Unfortunately a PDF Print of the test run my son and I made at the end of DEC 2005 can not be supported in the forum. The two points I would make are:-

1. Our results were very variable from run to run.

2. They bracket the claimed figure- being both above and below.

3. Given the big variation, I believe the fuel claim to be about right and compatible with both the RCJI and manufacturers figures.

We also put the model on a flat surface and attached it to a spring balance. While not very scientific- this suggested about 17.9 to 18.2lbs.

The main problem, we have found now the engine is a little older, is a tendency to flame out - particularly if the intake is obstructed. For example with a FOD screen or intake shroud. I was not surprised that when put in a Baby Boomerang Intro - it had problems - as the breathing in that model can be marginal and this engine seems very sensitive. RCU readers following the Baby Boomerang thread will know all about the problem and its cure.

In short, I feel this engine needs a few practical guys kicking it around the sky

I have a few airframes (4)ready to go with wasps . Phil is just tinkering with them before i get them . I will just be getting one engine to start with and gradually increase the number when they are available. we will be putting many hours on them every week to provide phil with data and feedback. I am looking forward to recieving a new generation engine as the prototype performed perfectly.

What you are doing sounds just what is needed.

I hope you note that I have managed to get a screen print off the Excel Page.

Best wishes

Sounds like we have progress great hope to hear more.

Maybe a successful season on the circuit will help put all the bad reports about the wasp behind it so phil can sell some debugged engines.

Heat seeker will you be a cottesmore with a wasp if no what meets will you be attending??

i will be at as many jet meets as possible from august onwards and any other shows suitable. the prototype wasp engine i meant. I'm hoping that we can get a few wasps in the air at the same time . HenryRG do you think a standard boomerang (built up) will get enough air through intakes or would it benefit from more

So if you were meant to be at Jetpower does that mean that Phil has a stand there? You are right kids take all your modelling time.

Lend me the plane I will demo it for you

Jetcher,

I can fly throttle left but found it a bit girly so I only fly heli' throttle left now.

Theres an old saying mode 2 is poo. Why generally use one stick for flying is that all your brain can cope with as for wiltshire he is so good he obviously only uses one stick so he can drink a cup of coffee while flying or point to the bloke with the small brain. LOL LOL LOL and LOL

Aaahh when friendships blossom ayy. love you

Wiltshire only sell quality anyway (motor and rotors - plug for ya dave) so the viper must be that looks good to me and yes I am compareing it to bvm it might to halve the price but its not halve the quality.

i agreee, throttle right jockeys are equiv to left handed people......they come from a different planet.

on real jets the throttle is on the left...........like os real blokes.....as Jason put it.
