Hi Dave

I have them at arround 40º. I have reduced a bit from the recomended SM 50º to reduce chance of elevator blanking.

Original install before the mods

I will be doing my Hawk maiden within in next week or two. If I may ask, what Flap settings has Jack suggested ? I presently have my flaps set for 15 degrees for takeoff and 35 degrees for landings. My CG is set at 230mm. Hope all goes well.

Hi

Thanks.

You don't need flaps for take off. Maybe for the maiden, I would go a bit nose heavy. At 220mm you'll be a bit nose heavy.

If you kept the fuel tank in it's original position, you'll be nose heavy at take off for sure, even at 230mm. But for landing CG will move backwards

If I recall correct, Jack Diaz recommended 40º for landing, but search this thread. It's here...

Regards

Nuno

Assembling my taipipe and bellmouth..in the SM instructions they discuss "silicone glue"....I have never glued the bellmouth but also would be interested to see if a hgih temp option exists and I find drilling the SS tailpipe challenging with my setup - but, I prefer screws....

Thanks for any insight,
Dave

Dave, you can find high temp glue/sealant at an auto parts store. The Permatex sealant is good up to 600F.

Hi

I drilled mine with 3 screws (M3x6mm with nut) placed at 120º. It's easier if you punch the pipe to guide the drill.

Use screws, it's better.....

j.c.a. - Your Hawk is the 100, right? Lights are placed in different ways

Well, this past Fri I did my maiden flight on my new large SM Hawk. I must say, I am totally happy with the plane. Flight went very well. I moved the CG forward to 220mm back from LE and the later flights were exactly want I want for a setup.
I have a total of 7 flights and to me the Jet Cat 180 is to much for my liking, so today I switched out and put a Jet Cat 140 in and will try to fly again tomorrow.
Overall, the flights were fun even with the last flight ending with a dead stick.

Hi Joe

Congratulations on your maiden.

Did you flew it inverted with CG at 220mm? If so, did you use elevator input to fly level?

Regards

Nuno

Yes, I flew inverted and yes it took some input on down elevator. Hard to say how much because I use less down ele. than up.

So, still a bit nose heavy... maybe 225-230mm, that´s my guess where the spot point is.

j.c.a.-read the first pages of this thread. Alex 48 built a Hawk100 with lights.

I install lights in mine but the 100 are not the same.

regards

I did the first flight at 230mm cg, but I did not quite like the feel. I moved my batteries forward and am at 220 if not maybe 222mm. I like the feel for me better now. My takeoffs were exactly what I wanted with the nose gear liftoff with the mains following shortly afterwards. Nice scale looking takeoffs. The landing were nose high also but flying off grass, the nose gear settled quick because of the grass being thick and taller then normal.

@ j.c.a.

For example here:

Thanks, having trouble with the language ref filling out the payment info to Austria the page won't translate I emailed them.
If you are still having difficulty getting those fittings those and a lot more are available from Intairco in Australia (and no language difficulties either).

Hey Joe
Congrats on the maiden. I also plan to have my CG set to 220mm and just wondering if you needed any mixing of elevator for takeoff and landing flaps. Maybe a bit of up elevator if anything? Would help for my setup when the time comes thanks
Regards
George

Hello George,

Thanks.
I am still fine tuning my setup, but as of right now, I am using 15 degrees for takeoff flaps and 35 for landing. seems to work well for now. As for the ele-flap mix, I ruffly set my mix to give me about 1/4" up ele with takeoff flap and about 3/8" up with landing flap. I have not changed this and I do not see any major pitch changes with flap deployment.
I am also setting up an iGyro that has the pmix for ele-flap turned off when the gyro is turned on, and the gyro is easily adjusting for any pitch change there may be. I have taken off and landed in both gyro on and off settings and have had nose gear lift off first and the Hawk fly off with no leaping into the air and main gear first touch down as seen by many with no fight during the approach.

You will love the way this plane flies.

Good luck when it comes time for your maiden flight.

Joe
