Being I have both big block and small block RC trucks I can tell you my big blocks burn fuel at a MUCH faster pace then my small blocks. If all your friend is going to do is bash I say get the MT2 .18SS. If he is going to race get the Hellfire SS not the RTR! Just a suggestion.

No offence but I am guessing you and your friend are quite young like in your early to mid teens?

OK, I'm sold - I've decided to get an OS. .18 CV-RX for my RTR MT2.
[link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP7&P=0[/link]

However, I suspect I will have to do some upgrades to the drivetrain for it to handle the power, right???

A friend suggested all that I will need is:
- 2x HPI Heavy-Duty Final Gear Set P1x38T/P1x13T ([link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=001057081&I=LXJYM2&P=K[/link])

What else is critical and required before I put in the bigger engine? Universal dogbones, MIP CVDS - new pinion/spur???

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Matthew

I would and hope you had some in it before putting up for that long! When my engines sit about every two months I put a couple drops of after run oil in and turn them over.

I would all so recommend up grading to the MTSS clutch bell and bearings which is the same thing as the Savage but get the race CB as it is hardened and vented.

Yes the ring and pinion is a VERY good idea and highly recommended!

That is a very neat site but unless you are going to have them make a bunch of the same parts would not be cost effective. Minimum of $150 set up plus the price of material and making the part. All so if the part did not work right all they have to say is you designed it. Do not get me wrong as it is a very neat find and thanks for the heads up.

The $150 is just the set up fee not the finely charge. But if you come up with something that well sell and is durable you never know might be worth having many sets made to sell. Main thing is you are having fun and yes post pictures.

Thanks 46u - the MTSS clutch bell is a 15T, so I'm guessing I'll also have to drop in the 47T spur from the 18SS?

BTW the ring and pinion, do you happen to have Tower Hobbies part numbers for those?

Thanks
Matt

I know things differ sometimes on the kits from country to country but what information I got off the US HPI web site the 18ss runs a 52-tooth spur. On my OS .18 TZ I just changed to 15 CB with 49 Spur but have not checked it out yet. 15CB 47 Spur sounds high to me for an OS CV-R. A lot has to do where you are going to run.

On Towers web site to get there part number you can type in HPI part number in the search box and it will normally bring up the part with both there and OEM part number. But here you go.

Thanks 46u. I think for now I'll just see how it goes with the 13/52 stock combination.
Sorry when I was asking about the ring & pinion, do you happen to have HPI part numbers for those?

Thanks
Matthew

If you open the link I posted above near the top right hand corner it has HPI Racing and under it is the manufactures number 86336 this is the HPI number. I like the way Tower Hobbies all ways list the OEM number in their listings. All so you can go to any of HPI web sites and down load any of their manuals that have a break down with part numbers. Do not mind helping just letting you know in case you need other information in the future. Yes it will not hurt to see how the gearing you have goes first and if need be you can change latter.

Well guys I can say one thing after getting my TZ broke in and tuned it is a BIG hand full!!! I have it geared at 15CB and 49 spur and when I am rolling along and hit the throttle and count to 1 all 4 tires are ballooning if I can keep the front wheels on the ground. I started with 13 CB and 52 spur breaking it in and taking it easy I had a problem keeping the front wheels on the ground after the first couple of tanks of fuel at half or less throttle. So I geared it up and still think I am going to have to go higher. Need to get it to the track to see what other changes I need to make as it handles totally different with the TZ.

OS .18 TZ is one of the highest if not the highest HP .18 on the market and you better have the drive train beefed up where it will take it! All so I think it is going to be way too much power on the track but I will see. They cost around $210 depending on which one you get. This it the one I have and if I had it to do all over I would get one with out the pull starter and use my starter box. I would all so get it with the slide carburetor but I have had this engine for over a year before installing it and got a pretty good deal on it. It has as much HP as some big blocks!

All so check this out.

It all depends, how far away from you is he? If he is not close and it has to be shipped I would have him ship motor first so you can check it out and see if it is OK. How did you meet this person and what motor is it?
