Nice, is that an off the gun finish or has it been 'massaged' to get that shine?

That first picture was my primer/whitepaint base wet sanded withh 1000. Kind of sad to paint over that...

I then shot a thin topcoat of white and wet sanded that to 2000 here. I am now ready to run my tape and spray masks. busy day today, I should have the "evil" twins done today.

I'll post more details soon. and walk through the steps once I get finished.

plus I now have the pictures to do a very detail paint thread, learned a lot doing two planes together.

I'll be painting my personal planes next week !!!!

Wendel,

Are you running the Perry Pump and tuned pipe? If so I started mine at 2 1/2 out on the top end and 2 turns on the low end. Once the engine is running on the top end correct I lower the throttle to around 1/8th. ( good high idel) Then start leaning in the low end till you hear a good firm 2 stroke sound. At this point you are going to be close. Idel the engine all the way down and let it run for about 15 seconds and then advance the throttle to full pretty fast but not just jamming the stick. If the engine transitions smooth then you have it right. If it sputters and then picks up you need to lean the low end needle about a 1/8th turn. Keep doing this till the engine goes to full throttle without any caughing. Then to make sure the engine is not lean in the mid range, bring the throttle up slowly till you get to half or a little above and let the engine run. If the engine is lean in the mid-range you will know pretty quick. I did this same tunning on my OS160 setup and it ran great. Once you set it you will never have to touch again (after the engine is broke in). If you are using the Mueller header and Aero Slave pipe follow the Jon Lowe Cookbook. Also use the coupler material from Rocket City Racing. You can put one of those couplers on it and forget it. Believe me I know and the hard way. I'll put the link on this post.

Hi all,

I pulled the tape on the twins last night, and went to bed early, slept over 10 hours - boy was I tired. Too, too many all nighters the last couple weeks. But the twins are DONE !!!! I've got a little clean-up work and hand buffing/polishing, but the paint work is complete and the planes will be delivered to the customer this weekend.

You all will be seeing these babies on the Masters flight line in D3 and the Nats this year !!!!

it feels great to be done with these birds !!!!

enjoy!

I painted the base white on my personal vf-3 a couple nights ago and I am ready to wet sand and prep for taping. I hope to have my personal plane done shortly as I am on a roll right now.

Also I have learned so much more regarding the "Zen and the Art of Airplane Finishing" - I promise to do a really detailed step-step thread on finishing these babies from raw wood to final clear coat.

cheers all !

HI All,

Finished and delivered the planes today.

Really happy how these turned out, the paint jobs including the fiberglass base added 6.25 oz to each plane all up. I was up to 2 am last night hand buffing these babies.

Once I catch up a little I post some details on these planes. I am also in the process of painting my personal vf3, it's in a nice white base coat ready for wetsanding and taping. Since I am on a roll I and aiming at getting it painted this week...

enjoy !

Dean

ps. Now to catch up on about a month of sleep.

One fantastic job there Dean. I wish I could get my paint to work that well. You know I'm getting lots of practice and sooner or later I'll get the hang of it. When Chris and I get his VF3 cleared I'll post some pics here on RCU.

Hi All,

Here are some pictures from our practice day today. Arch and Tara Stafford spent the weekend flying with us in Georgia and Alabama. Today we flew at our Alabama practice site about an hour from Atlanta. We had gusty and windy conditions but had a fun day. Here are a few pics.

Chris,

Wish I could be. Unfortunately I wont be in the country. Not to mention, i'd be 1000 miles away if I was. Also, unfortunately I don't have a plane.. Mike stole my plane back... actually just kidding. He has it, but wanted to touch up some stuff and do some tweaks he didnt have time to do last year before the NATS. I wont be back in the country until mid august, so no NATS for me this year.

Ohh man thats not good[:'(] I guess you got to do what you got to do. If your plane is with mike, then that means I have a backup for this year. oh yeah! haha Just kidding. but what exactly did he have to do to it.

There were one or two spots that he wanted to touch up the paint. Little hanger rash things...nothing that you couldnt see if you didnt know where to look. Also, the plane was painted and cleared so quickly that it never got buffed last year. It will sparkle when I get it back. Along with my number 2 plane in August....I'm lazy, so I never took the time to buff and polish it myself.

About the backup thing.....I don't know that you can find enough man power for Mike to let that one out of his sight... He's as attached to that plane as I am....

Yeah this plane is oficially impounded [8D]

Nobody else in the world would care, but it has a couple of spots in the paint where I just didn't have time to fix it last year....and this is the first chance I've had to get it back and really finish it out to my satisfaction. Since I'm painting quite a few planes over the next 6 weeks or so, the timing is perfect.

Also I can go over the plane and see how it's held up to a year worth of pounding. So far it looks like brand new, with a couple of small things. Just good long term info to have at my disposal.

Yeah it sucks Arch won't be at the Nats this year, but ya gotta pay the bills...we'll be here next year!

I'm going though, and maybe I can find the time to practice this time (looks good right now!)

Although it would be a logictical nightmare, it would be fun to get all of the Black Magics together for a pic.

Ya mike I'm sure you will find some practice time. Man I cant wait for NATS to be here. Andersonville should hold me over till then that looks like it will be an awesome contest. plus Ill have my new plane which will be nice. I do need another foamy though, after,Dean ripped my last one to shreads who would have guest that that Black Magic would still hover with half a wing, that sucker has prob. a pound of epoxy on it. , man that contest was awesome specially the foamy flyin we had after. I thought Mike was going to piss his pants after I saw how much he was laughing

Hey Chris,

Since I gave you that foamie, your fair game buddy I'll send you a new kit this week. I am back to packing foamie kits and will have stock this week. I know a lot of guys have inquired about kits recently and now that I got the Twins outta my shop, I can now focus on foamie kits, vinyl packages and my personal planes - hey what a concept...... like paint something for myself... wow....

If we can make Mike wet his shorts at Andersonville that would be hilarious !!!! Besides he has two of my foamies partily built and he better have at least one of those flying at Andersonville. - Oh, and since I also gave him those kits - he is fair game as well !!!

We did have a blast tearing up foamies in Birmingham, let's do it again !!!!!

oh man for sure. I tried some of those E-Flite props and they work pretty good better than those orange ones and You can buy two of the E-flites for the price of one APC, Also Dean is there a way to cut a monster "M" for the Rudder on the foamie I want it to match my plane a little bit. but be ready for me in andersonville we will have to see if you can hover with half a wing.
