YS-170CDI Flight Report

Matt,
Good luck in your project. You will need to be very careful during construction. Please keep us informed. I built the Abbra in all versions and found that the weight penalty of gas engines is a little over 1 lb compared with glow Abbra version. The Abbra was design originally for gas engines so the airframe is very light. Using the OS 160 is below 10 lb. It is good that you are going to use a soft mount. The first version of the Abbra did not have one and was almost destroy by flutter (one aileron). We used a custom built Hyde mount and solved the vibration problems.

Hello,
Have you some news about sale-date for DZ170 CDI ?
And price list ?
Link to a shop ?
thx
- The Conversion kit for the DZ170 will be available in 30-45 days.
- DZ170 CDI engine will be shipped in 2-3 months.
-
According to the person in Yamada, the release to the US market will be a
couple of months later than the Japan market.
He also suggested the best way is to make an advance order at on of the shops in
Japan. Then you can get the product immediately right after the market release at
a price cheaper than the "official" price on the Yamada Website.
The Yamada website is: http://www.yspower.co.jp/english/e_home.html
I'm placing my order this week :-). I can find out some shops and let any
interested parties know if anyone wishes. Let me know.

I had a friend in Japan call the Yamada factory and ask them the "recommended oil percentage" in the Fuel.
The factory reply was that "Low oil does not cause the engine to cut out, unlike other glo motors. However, the factory cannot recommend any particular percentage and users have to experiment for themselves". When asked about Nitro percentages for the CDI, the answer was the same.
So the factory is not making any particular recommendations. Please ask Steph Carrier to post his results since we all want to get feedback on the precise fuel mix to use with the CDI engine.

Also, I wonder what the effect would be of even lower nitro. Has Stephane tried 15% or even 10%? Just curious..
The 170 CDI would make a very economical SPORT engine : low weight, lots of power and great technology and reliability. Hence the questions.
Thanks,

I do like the idea of a 110S CDI. I'll have someone check at the factory. Hopefully next year!

Correct. However, the real price is in the Fuel and not just the engine. The engine will last a long time if one props it slightly lighter.

I was not referring to the price of the CDI version, just the price for any YS engine. What does a regular 170 go for, $800 or so? For that price tag you can buy a large gas engine and fly giant scale. As a sport engine, the YS line is grossly overpriced regardless of the economy or quality they offer. As a competition engine, they are superb.

Giant scale is good but also very expensive in terms of the cost of the airplane, servos, etc. It's a different beast. The point is that if one wishes to stick to glo engines, then Fuel cost is a critical issue to consider since most engines today are designed for high Nitro (which is a little bit of a pity, unfortunately). Personally, I think that the extra price tag on a YS is worth the money (Just as it is on a 2-stroke JETT) since you do get better quality with a YS compared to, say, an OS or other engine.

Hi Atul13
Fuel is made with synthetic oil. With 170 cd, he did'nt use 15 % oil or 10 %. He used 5 % and now uses 7 %.

I understood that the Oil was 7% and not 15% or 10%. What I meant to ask was whether Stephane had ALSO tried lower NITRO - i.e. 15% nitro or 10% Nitro. What - if anything - was the affect of the lower Nitro on the DZ 170 CDI?
Thanks,

Mark - a DZ170 costs about $690 or so, depending on where you buy it. The CDI version is likely another $200+, so it is certainly expensive. An equivalent 'good' glo engine will cost you perhaps $450 or so, so the extra price for the "YS Benefits" - whatever these might be - is about $200. This price is easily made up in fuel costs.

Almost all YS engines are designed for competition use, they are not "sport" engines. That is why they are better quality and more expensive than others...

Hi Atull
Steph uses 5 % and 7 % oil with 20 % nitro (propeller is APC 19x11).
He did'nt test lower nitro. But there is no problem of reliability with 15 % nitro, only engine will be less powerfull.
I saw his flights. With normal 170 duration is about 9 mn and with YS170 cdi duration is about 17 mn.
After flights no need to clean the plane.

I don't believe ANY thread has ever made me want to spend money as much as this one!
The more I read, the more I'm convinced I have to have one of these!
Clean, quite, more friendly, far cheaper fuel costs and double running time. Have I forgotten anything?
Sounds just wonderful.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
Where do I sign?

It should ship towards the end of this year in Japan. Yamada is known to normally slip its estimated shipping dates by a month
or two..

Great points . . The 170CDI would not typically be used in a 'Sport' style airplane (we can spec other sizes and type of engines to perform well in Sport planes with out the expense of a YS170CDI). As Atul mentioned, Giant scale and Pattern (which is really ONLY where you would use a 170CDI) are totally different animals. Only a Giant Scale pattern plane would fly anything like a pattern plane
