Next test flight this weekend! I will have a Go PRO mounted because we are going to put the Eiii thru its paces!

Paul.......starting to look like an airplane now.......your metal work has breathed like into the Beast!
I just checked this morning's weather forecast and it is not supposed to get above freezing this weekend - high of 30 on Sat and 32 on Sun - brrrrrrrr

Larry - GoPro is an on board video camera - if it gets exciting, we will have a bird's eye view of the carnage!

I'm afraid to ask what a Go Pro is.

Larry
It's a very cool , ultra compact, HD digital video camera.

Thought it might be his nickname for a DA 150.

Go Pro is a small digital camera that takes Pictures and Video. The camera is commonly mounted an, Quadcopter, Airplanes, Helis, Helmets ( skiers), car ect. The video can easily be download to youtube.

The image quality is excellent.

The up shot is, you can record any thing, even maidian flights of EIII's.

Step by step, little by little.......that is the way to get a project completed. Even if you are tired or running low on artistic juices, this process works!

Hey Larry, you did know that I am a slow builder, right?

The wing tip edges have been reinforced and glued on and gussetts added to strengthen the tip for when I gouge it into the gound - oh wait a minute.......the never happens, does it?

Next up the ailerons need to be fitted and hinged, servos installed, push rods cut and fit, aileron horn installed, wing tube installed......and the list goes on. The more I get accomplished, the more I find I need to do.......

Turtle Report

The turtle is alive and well and has reglued all the joints in the wings with carpenter's glue......I used mostly CA initially when framing them up and as time passes and I keep handling, sanding, bumping (dare I say dropping?) the wings I hear a lot of cracking and joint movement type of sounds.
This is the first time I have used this type of plywood and CA together and I am finding that carpenter's glue is the better choice over CA.

Now all the wing joints are sound and secure.

Signed,
The Turtle

Turtle Report

I finally got the ailerons hinged........I HATE [:@] hinges! [:'(] When I get to a part of the build that I don't like I tend to procrastinate.....[:-] and, uh, er, well that's the reason for the turtle reports.

Just for kicks, I checked to see how much movement the design allowed - WOW - an easy 2.5 inches up and down.

I'll probably leave that much up travel and put in maybe a half to 3/4 of an inch down.......a big flat bottomed wing rolls better with a good amount of differential dialed in to the ailerons.

I just loaded some pics to the Moki main thread. I updated my RCSB airplane build thread with photos reduced by Photo Razor, I then copied and pasted the whole thing into the RCU fast reply box and it worked to my surprise!

Turtle Report

I modified the ailerons. I cut away the built in control horns, laid in a/c ply and will use conventional control horns.

The reasons were two fold - first I thought that the original horn was a little weak (easily bent to the side) and second, I just know that somewhere down the line I would break the horn loading the wings into the van........I have done things like that before.

So now when that happens, I can just unscrew the broken horn and replace it with a new one.

Over the weekend I also checked the incidence on the stab and wings.

First I plugged the wings in.....then I slid the anti rotation pins in place - this is the first time I have done this.

The Robart incidence meter read right at 2 degrees positive. The wing is a big flat bottomed wing with a raised leading ledge.....it raises gently from the front spar to the leading edge.

By design, the flat bottom is located parallel to the longerons - or to put it another way, it is zero degrees. The raised leading edge gives the wing an overall positive incidence relative to the stab. The firewall is also set at zero degrees. When I mount my engine I will probably give it a little bit of right thrust - maybe 1 to 2 degrees and a little down thrust, again 1 or 2 degrees.

Are both the flying wires AND the landing wires supposed to be functional? I ask because if the landing wires are also to be functional (or at least semi-functional) then I wonder whether using ply for the top pylon is sufficient. I certainly wouldn't trust it. At the very least, I'd want to sandwich a piece of music wire between the ply parts.

But, otherwise, it's looking very good indeed. I almost (almost) don't notice the "split" rudder. It would be nice though if the wing roots had a scale "notch" in them, however, to allow for the proper shape cowl cheeks.

Abu,
The flying wires are semi-funtional, they were put on to keep the wings from twisting.
The 4 cables were installed to the plywoood "A" post to keep it from a twisting load.......it is plenty strong.
I certianly trust it and we will put it thru the paces Saturday and I'm sure it will be fine.

Cheers,
HPA

HPA, I see now that you have support cables (with turnbuckles) on the rear side of the A-pylon as well. I hadn't noticed them before and was afraid that the pylon might simply be broken off on a rough landing. Still, I think if I were going to build one, I'd replace the wooden pylon with something like streamlined aluminum.

Anyway, it really does look great and I look forward to hearing about how it flies this time around.

Turtle Report

Aileron servos can now be mounted.......

Hey Art .....
Do you shim your servo off the plywood so it get the full shock absorbing function of the rubber isolators?
And will you pin your mount blocks or just trust the glue ?
And do you think Greg will wear his turtle pj's at "Wings for Kids" this June?

Cheers,
HPA

Yes, I will shim the servo when I drill for the mounting screws. I use a small piece of 1/32 inch a/c plywood placed between the servo and the ply hatch for a spacer. I also use the same shim when I locate the servo mounting blocks - I place the shim between the servo and the mounting block (I do this on both ends). This gives enough space around the servo so that the case doesn't touch the mounting blocks or the plywood hatch.

Sometimes I drill and pin the mounting blocks and sometimes not - I haven't yet on this plane but I might.

We can only hope that Greg will wear them - I think the kids will enjoy the show!
