Need some advice , feedback:

I use a Master Airscrew 15x8 on my OS 120 4 stroke pumped and get a solid 9000 rpm on the ground.
Is that what I can expect with that prop ? Is it enough for the Hellcat ?

Also, I noticed that idel and midrange has a quite rich setting compared to full throttle. I say that because going from idel to full throttle the engine is quite smokey...while at full power I got almost no smoke at all.
Any comment to that ?

Pete

Yes, that is about right with that prop. That is enough for the Hellcat.

Since we are on the topic of props, I have a magnum 1.08 two stroke coming as we speak for my hellcat. Any ideas on props for this plane and engine combo (either 2 blade or 3 blade). Thanks.

Hi Hal,are these the door collers from sierra and if they are what size are they. Also will the gear doors cover a 4" wheel. Dion I can,t wait to get your parts, they look so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!My hellcat is now ready to install your parts and then paint.
thanks guys,Fred
Thanks Fred! The gear doors are the scale size for a 4" tire but I would not use that big of tire. I'm using a 3 3/4" Robart and it looks perfect. 4" may be scale but that doesn't mean it looks right on the model.

I think I should do an update! Been really busy the last few weeks. I’m going to be in Florida for a while, spring break ya know! I will not be selling anymore parts until mid April, so check my site then If you would like something. The cockpit has taken some time to perfect, but I think I have it! Not all parts are shown in these pictures, I do not have the rudder pedals, trim wheels or shoulder harness and lap belts installed. I just ran out of time, simple as that. I will sell these to those that want one, it will include full size templates for all formers needed so that it just falls right into place. It’s very simple to install.

I’ve been asked to show more on how I did the flaps, so here we go.

The flaps are 2 ¾†wide, basically the same as the widest part of the inboard flap. Therefore we need to measure in ¼†at the root to accommodate our ¼†trailing edge stock. See first picture.

Next cut the balsa sheeting on the line and pull the stock trailing edge off along with the sheeting. The ribs are made out of bamboo or something, they are not easy to cut. I cut mine off with wire snips, works great. Smooth them off with your Dremel.

Mark the locations of your hinges and add some balsa blocks to anchor them.

Install your ¼†thick trailing edge stock. This is made of one piece, it will be much stronger than the stock trailing edge that was made in 2 pieces.

I used part of the inboard stock flap, cut the trailing edge off and glued a new leading edge on. The inboard flap is 7 3/16†long and the outboard flap is 9 13/16â€. The outboard flap goes beyond the dihedral joint by about 1 ½â€. I did this to make it look more scale in size.

I used some PC Board material in the outboard flap and a piece of wire in the other so that they could move together. It works very well.

Next two pictures show flaps up and down.

I then made a thick paper template so that I could cut my Flight Skin to the proper shape so that it covers the gap in the flaps and the aileron.

.012 Flight Skin was cut and glued on with thin CA.

Light Weight Spackle was added to smooth out the edge on the Flight Skin and then sanded smooth.

That’s it! If I have time in the next few days I’ll glass the wing, we’ll see.

Dion

Is that the 110YS in that plane?
It seems to fly it with plenty of authority.

My Hellcat had a Saito 150 four stroke. However, a YS 110 would also fly it with plenty of authority [8D]

Even the Saito 1.20 in mine flies the plane with authority. I was surprised how fast it would fly.

This thread has turned into a big YAWN! Must be at least 50 "what engine you got" posts. Like to see some new posts with pictures of Hellcat projects! Anybody got my canopy painted and installed?

Anyway, this is my last day to work on my plane for a while, so I thought I'd try and get the wing glassed. I joined the panels as the instructions say with 30min epoxy, did a final check for dents and nicks and started glassing. I'm using the thinned resin technique I describe earlier that I used on my stabs. I saw an earlier post where Richard weighed the wing and fuselage separately, that will be handy for a comparison! I'll be sure and do the same. I've eliminated 6" of wing and an extra aileron servo, the servo alone is close to 2 ounces. My complete cockpit kit weighs a little over 1 1/2 ounces so I probably used that up there, but that's in the fuselage. Just the glass that was removed to make an opening for my cockpit was pretty heavy, along with all the plywood I removed below the cockpit. It'll be interesting.

Hal, post some pictures of your progress!

Here you go. Pictures of the wings about to be joined. I am putting the air tank in the forward part of the wing. I have covered the ailerons and outbd flaps with Super Coverite. I have also put Fliteskin on the trailing edge of the wing that overlaps the flaps/ailerons.

Sorry Dion I actually have your canopy painted but just haven't had a chance to install it yet. It really needs the right pilot underneath to set it off and I haven't decided on one yet...

but on a lighter note the guy at our field with the Zero I'm trying to stay in front of crashed it..... so I guess that rates a meatball under the cockpit...

I trim your canopy today and got some of that pinstripe you used. How are you cutting it.I don,t went to cut into the canopy I had to fill in two scerws and some lines.I finshed my own inst panel,it came out nice. Now have to wait for gear to come back from sierra, then I can paint.
why are you stopping work on your hellcat?

Fred, use a sharp x-acto knife, the tape will cut VERY easy. In fact just scoring it slightly will cause it to separate at the line. The canopy will have no problem withstanding some cuts or just scratches. Practice on some scrap material, you'll get the hang of it.

I'm happy to say that I did finish glassing the wing today, but I have to stop work for a while because I'll be in Tennessee and Florida. When I get back I'll have 2 weeks to finish it, some final detailing and then paint, nothing fancy![8D]

Thanks for the update Andy, let us know if you find the perfect pilot! Can't wait to see how different your plane is going to look, some before and after shots would be nice!

I may be hanging around the net a little, but I won't be in my shop.

Chow,

Dion

I used a pilot from Hanger 9. He doesn't look to bad but will be much happier when he has a proper canopy. I'll post some photos when I get the new one painted and mounted this weekend. Here's a photo with the old stock canopy.

I found a great pilot from Century Jets. It is a full body pilot, but he seperate at the waist if you just want the top portion. Get the 1/7 scale WWII pilot. He comes painted, but I added a little detail to mine. Very nice and looks sweet under the canopy. If you do not cut out the cockpit floor you will have to cut a lot of him off, but if you cut out the floor and then put in a new subfloor or full cockpit he fits perfectly and looks the part. This picture shows the pilot and the dimension for one size, they have many different sizes
