CMP Zero Makeover

My present plane is powered by a G-62 and it flys it very well. My initial thought was the G-62 was the heaviest engine I had and … well … it still needed nose wt, in the order of 2 pounds. A friend built the same model with a G-38 for power and moved the E and R servos forward, still only added two pounds of wt with the lighter engine. Both planes flew at similar speeds the only difference was when we pulled vertical, or landed (I was carring three pounds more).
So for electric conversion I have a power 160 on the shelf without a home, on 18x10 and 10s it won’t be a barn burner but should fly nicely

I've been slowly doing a small makeover on my Zeke since I picked it up a year ago. I have a G62with ignitionand was wondering if you had to add any additional weight to balance with the G62?
Disregard that green canopy, still working on the paint.

I have one of the 80in ws cmp zeros, powered by a G-62, that i have loved flying for years but it is slated to go electric. as soon as i can find a new cowl for it. the pressent cowl would look like swiss cheese without the G-62 stuffed in it. anyone have leads on where to get a new one?

Looks nice! What paint did you use? It looks like the color is spot on!
I'm about ready to hang the motor on mine. Everything else is done.

Hey fellow CMP Zero owners. Does anyone else notice a pitch change when flaps are deployed. Mine pitches nose up quite a lot with half flaps deployed. Do any of you compensate for this with a programmed trim change on your transmitter?
Would love to hear how you deal with this change. I can land the zero no problem but would love to work out a switch on my radio to throw in some trim adjustment when dropping flaps to lower the landing speed.
Thanks in advance.

I have a few degrees down elevator programed in with full flaps to reduce the pitching . I started with 5 degrees and reduced from there .I think it is now around 3 degrees down elevator with full flaps(30 degrees) only , half flaps(15 degrees) didn't seem to need it .

Glazier,
You back in Hawaii now? I would like to take a closer look at that Zero. About ready to make a purchase. CMP or ESM Zero that TBM is coming out with in June.

Hey Mark!
I'm in the process of it right now... It will probably be August before I have the family moved over. Busy busy!
If it were me I think I would go with the ESM version. Parts availability and service will be one reason. The other is, it's already in a Pearl Harbor white scheme! I believe it's slated to be released this month. The CMP version is nice, But to really make it a keeper, you're going to have to do a little work. It's definitely not bad for what it is though.

Glazier,
Yeah! Cool. Let me know if you need help with transportation or logistics.
I crashed my Ziroli Zero last year and I need to get another Zero going fast. I have been researching alternatives other than a long build. The CMP looked good but a little short on what I like.I noticed in your post you that you split the flaps as CMP put it out with un-scale flaps. Looks like the ESM is scale. I think I`ll go with the ESM Zero.
Anyway Aloha Brah!

Thank you Prekin,
It is the 82" version. I wanted to keep this one simple, (but I also love alittle detail) so I wanted to test out a method to give it some "pop" without it being a total rework. I tested with Testors aluminum and silver enamel paint, on some old composite flaps until I had an idea of how I wanted to do it. I found that the aluminum looked good when applied, but "grayed out" a lot and became quite dull when dry. The silver on the other hand, worked quite well. It is applied with several different little pieces of sponge, to give different textures. I only have half of the fuse done so far.

I know, your is the 82", my one is also 82". The 82" verision has 631- 113 as a tail number.
When I add my Zero it into the "CMP 120 Zero ARF Build thread", I didn´t know about this thread.
So you want add only some outwearing without any rework? I did this thing with my ESM Stuka, and many people like Stuka than my Zero
I think that the outwearing on my Zero is not very successful job. It was my first experience with the plane and silver or aluminium color. [

Which paint did you use?

Glad to see you bring that beauty back out!
here are a few more pics...
it may be abit much for some, but I really wanted that worn paint look, and not the chipped so much. I wanted it to look like it was worn down in the Pacific sun and sand. I went alittle heavy where the pilot would enter and exit the plane. I'll work on the cowl abit tomorrow if I can. I have to figure out exactly what I am going to do on the wings and tail....I guess I'll figure something out...
When I'm done, I'll hit the whole plane with steel wool to really distress it abit more.
I'll heat the copper pipes up red hot with a torch as well, this will give them a well used look.

That's a really good job! I like it in front of the canopy. Where the sun has beat down on it the most. Looks great on the top surfaces. Maybe you can think about carrying that effect out towards the back of the fuselage on top by the back of the canopy. And then the tops of the wings need to look like the top of the fuselage. I'm looking forward to the finished project. Good luck with that black cowling LOL you're doing a great job I like what you have done

Thanks 77chickenhawk,
that's probably what I will end up doing to the wings and tail, as well as the rest of the upper fuse. I've found that if I dip the sponge in the paint and then blot it until its almost dry, I can get a nice, random stipple effect.

I got a moment to work on the cowl abit. A little blending here and there and the fuse will be done. I will probably put the tail wheel in that I have from Earl Anune.

man this has turned out much better than I had imagined...that silver paint was the way to go, it really pops in the sunlight.
