The funny thing is that there is a F1 revival going on with a lot of new Q40's based on F1 planes.
The full scale Miss Ashley (aka Vendetta)

3-11-02 Update.
Not much new today on Chris's Tsunami - nothing that a photo will really show. Made elevator and rudder pushrods, installed a control horn, put the rudder post in, did some filling, etc.
In other news
- Props are on their way from Australia (yes, you read that right)
- Painting will *hopefully* happen this weekend (17th).
- Soon to be released will be the Luvara Air Racing webcam. Yes, watch us build in the garage live! Since I recently installed DSL and a wireless router, we'll be able to take a laptop out to the garage and hook up a webcam. Might be interesting to watch our construction! - more info to come.

Well, not much new. Building has slowed because we are just too busy with other things and Chris made the decision not to push it to make the Sacramento race on March 24th. He wants to make it look good and we both felt that rushing this airplane would be too much. Plus, the weather don't look good for painting.
So, here's a photo from today. Canopy is mounted, taped over and filler applied around it. Most control systems are in. It's getting there...

What did you use for a firewall, plywood? Was the firewall glued inside of laid up glass? How thick was it? I finished the molds for my 25% Edge 540 and laid up the first parts today. I did add a second layer of 6 oz. cloth around the firewall area but I am unsure of the ply thickness. I know some pattern guys that fly 1.20’s with only 1/8” lite ply behind the glass firewall. That does not sound strong enough, yet I don’t want a sled.
I was very happy with the first hatch that I made because I made a loose piece on the mold so I could build a 90 degree 1/2” return lip around all 4 sides. Tricky to lay up but worked great.

AV8TOR-
My firewall is actually nomex honeycomb with glass on both sides, 3/8" of an inch thick. It originated from some floorboard in a 747! I have a friend that works at an airline and gets old floorboard material which he gives to me from time to time. Works great for R/C!
I've seen 1/4" or 3/8" thick endgrain balsa with carbon and glass bagged over it on 75 cc motors. Something in that arena is about right.
How big is your firewall dimensionally?
Davis-
As for the race on March 24th, it is in Sacramento. go to: http://www.sacramento-rc-flyers.org/...rds_020324.jpg for the flyer. Their main site is at: http://www.sacramento-rc-flyers.org
We will not be going since our Tsunami is not done. My brother Chris had strep throat a week ago and is again sick this week. This, plus our busy schedules basically shut down building, not to mention the fact that the weather hasn't been decent enough to paint with.

More photos coming soon. Pulled my latest fuselage out of the mold this morning. Lightest one yet. 1lb 3 oz. That's 5 oz lighter than any others that I have made. Only former the fuse will need is the firewall.... Anyways, hope to have more photos and info soon. Been busy with many things.

Well, wanted to update everyone since I've been so quiet...
College had me bogged down and some events at our local club have kept me busy. Our Tsunami is making progress slowly and our 4 month old digital camera broke this past week
so no pics for awhile.
So, more will com. Just got to get the camera back and then move on with things. I've been busy engineering some other related things for R/C and racing. Wireless telemetry...what's that?

5/1 Update. Been busy as heck. Hope to get back into the garage in the next few weeks. Received our digital camera back this week and can start documenting things again. I'll probably post some event coverage pics here from giant scale racing this weekend at Reedley with the repaired camera.

Bill,
I'm not racing GSR this year. Way too busy. Technically, I am sponsoring two planes at Reedley though
One's got my wing technology and the other has, well, let's just say a Luvara powerpant with some oomph. I kinda feel like the scene from Days of Thunder where they loan motors out to competitors or have others drive their racecar...
I'll be there to help my sponsored people...

Ahh, summer...
So, an update is in order.
College is out for the summer and I'm going to enjoy myself. Had a rough ride this spring and didn't get to do much building. We're going to go back into the garage and start building now. I'm aiming to primer the Tsunami in this thread today or tomorrow and start layup on mine. The goal is to have two Tsunamis ready for the July 21 race in Sacramento. Seems feasible to me. I will be starting a new thread since this one is up to 121 replies....
I did get out to the field yesterday to fly a smaller .40 size Tsunami, powered by a Dubb Jett 40 quickee motor. Unfortunately, the bearings are shot, so time to send it off to Dubb Jett. This did get me fired up to fly the big one again, so I'm eager to work on the composite ones and get out into the garage!
Michael
Small, built up Tsunami minus motor. I built this in 1996 and it's still going strong.
