Especially the F-89 Scorpion does it for me, mostly because of its very exceptional design. I knew that I would build a turbine powered F-89 scale model someday, despite the fact that proper kits and plans are somewhat rare to find.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">There is currently one manufacturer I know of producing a quite large F-89 ARF kit here in Germany: Air-C-Race. The kit itself is available for quite a while now, but due to its massive size, I was reluctant to buy one yet.

Having flown piston engine models from Air-C-Race in the past, I know that the kits are of a very good quality and that the customer service from Michael has always been great. So why not hop in the car and have a look at the kit before I make the final decision to buy one?</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">Since there isn&rsquo;t much info about this impressive kit here on RCU, I decided to share the build with you guys. I hope to have the model airborne by the end of the summer.

The model is delivered in a sturdy box with the dimensions of 65"x40"x24,5". All parts are well packed and covered. To my surprise the wings, tiptanks and elevators come with high-quality wingbags.You would really not believe that a model of that size fits in such a "tiny"box.

.. and the tail section. The fiberglass work is outstanding. Carbon fiber is used in all relevant places and all plywood formers are of a very high quality. The elevator comes in one piece and has to be glued on the tail section.To make the job easy a small edge marks the perfect fit for the elevator segment.

The nose section is also removable. You can access your RCStuff via the cone which is held in place by magnets. It'll be important to mount as much of the RC /turbine electronics in the front to achieve the CGwithout the use of much lead. Ihope the job will be easier for me as I am most likely going for a single turbine configuration.

The nose junction als serves as nosegear mount. The whole nosecone plywood constructions is properly layered with carbon fibre.

All flying surfaces are pre hinged via steel pins at the factory. The servo mounts for the flaps are already in place located inside the gear well for easy access and maintenance. Aileron Servo is mounted through the wing-tip. All you need is a long screwdriver and patience to measure correctly (or a good eye). The tip-tank mount fits perfectly. A little loctite on the screws, some alignment and you're all set.

The gear mount in the wing itself is solid. I don't like the job of hinging the gear doors, so I'll possibly start with that to have it off the list. I'll post details about the retract units later tonight.

The kit also comes with a fiberglass cockpit tub. The canopy frame is also held in place via magnets so you don't have to come up with any kind of hinges or lock/unlock mechanism (unless you want to build a sliding canopy). What I really like is that the canopy frames are pre-cut and no further work apart from some fine-sanding is necessary. You can see some of the surface detail on the canopy frame. Besides, the whole surface detail of the model is quite nice.There is decent level of panel lines, rivets and hatches modelled on the surfaces.

Some more pics of the intake and turbine mounts. You will notice the fuel tank which is already built in and plumbed.The fuel tank can carry a massive load of 20,3 oz fuel which equals to 6 liters (I think). The turbine mount is prepared for either single-or twin turbine as previously written. All plywood formers for single conversion are included in the kitI will go for a single 180Nturbine with a bifurcated tailpipe.

Packed up and ready to carry the baby home. Although I am not 100%set on the finish yet I also picked up some decal sheets. Michael is also cutting them himself, so Ithink"custom"decals won't be a problem. The build will start during the weekend I hope. I will of course spare some more details about the landing gear first.

Alright. A few words on the servo mounts in the tail section. The whole servo installation will only take a couple of minutes I think. The servo slides into the laser cut plywood support plate and is then inserted into the rudder /elevators. I will use Futaba standard sized servos and there is absolutely no trimming necessary. The servo has a very tight, slop-free fit and the only work left to do is to cut out the slot for the servo arm. Pretty mean design, I think.

Here is another picture of the servo insterted into the mounting tray. What i really like is the tight fit because I initially had concerns that the servo would generate slop. Since the plate is pressing the servo tightly in place, this is unlikely to happen.

Some pictures of the landing gear which can be purchased as a set directly from ACR as well. Originally my plan was to use Behotec C-50 electric retract units, but the "home-made"retracts from ACR looked really good so I picked them up as well. The oleo legs are a work of art and the big alloy weels have a nice scale appearance. Due to construction layout, the noseleg is mounted on the nosecone which leaves the noseleg in a not-so-scale position. Apparently it is quite easy to move the leg back to the scale position but I have yet to decide if its worth the effort.

I love the scorpion, one of those so ugly its beautiful jets for me. Looking forward to seeing it come together.

Yeah, its pretty much the same for me. It is one ugly jet but that makes it so beautiful :]

By the way, some close ups of the alloy wheels ...I think they match up with the full scale nicely. I hope I can start with the first build pics tomorrow or on Friday at the latest. Got to clean up my workshop and get some bits and pieces first. Wheels are 7 1/4 "diameter.

I cant understand why the german gear makers all have pins for mounting the struts. It makes setting up the toe so much harder and once you grind a flat spot it virtually eliminates your chances of adjusting the toe as the gear wear in.[:@]

I couldn't agree more with you. I had the same headache when I wanted to convert my CARFMig-15 retracts to behotec.... Balls, no chance to mount the struts onto the mechanics. I also prefer to clamp the legs in the retracts rather than using the tiny allen screws to fix them. But yeah, somtimes you have to cut corners.

Nice project, my Dad was a RIO (radar intercept officer) in the 437FIS so I am familiar with the Tiger and missile motif. The F89 and F94 and F101 were flown by him in ADC (Air Defense Command). Thank God the Russian Bombers never came! I really remember the bright orange flight suits they wore. So if you put pilot figures in that would be cool, and don't forget to put little cigars in their chest pockets...
