Few

I'm shamed to say but I forgot to tell you that they are encoded in
quicktime format so you would need a Quicktime player to view it.

You can download it here, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Selleri, I was in K, Iceland in 1974. I was flying a resupply to Kuslak Greenland. When I left Iceland I had a Firebird painted on the Tail. Had to repaint the bird when I got home,, Perhaps I should paint the firebird on the tail of the Model? Just kidding,, If I had a pic I might, ,but no pic,, no bird.

PS,, I also found out it is true, ,there is a girl behind every tree.

Glad you liked it. Come visit us soon.

My clubs airfield.

More pics: [link=http://modelflug.net/?page=myndir&id=6]http://modelflug.net/?page=myndir&id=6[/link]

Ohh, yeah that new grass at the bottom left part of the pic is from "Northern Viking" exercise('97 I seem to recall)
when our friends in the Marines decided to take a short cut down to HelguvÃ*k(oil shipping point for NASKEF)
in order to surprise the defenders there.
I just thank God that they didn't drive over our field as it had been raining for the last 6 days and the track
they left were up to 40cm (about 16" ) deep at places.
The circle is the place where they turned around.

EDIT: The largest runway is about 180x12m (540x36f) of cut grass.

Default Wing Incident

Finally I measured the incident on the herk. I mounded the wing flat in the wing saddle when I built the plane, makins some assumptions which may or may not have been correct. I assumed the wing saddle was parallel to the wing centerline. This would give a good base to the wing without having to rework the saddle fiberglas.

Results.

The wing on the saddle is - 1/2 degee to the wing fuse top.

The top was measured about 3" behind the trailing edge of the wing and before the joiner point.

I leveled plane to set the wing incident to zero. (top flite i think brand for the incident meter.

Then I checked the stab incident and it was 1 degree positive.

What this means is that if the stab is at zero the wing is at -1 degree, which is too negative. (I would expect zero or + 1/2 to 1)

The wing can not be adjusted and only the stab can be moved because I made it removable. I have previously lowered the leading edge of the stab about 3/8" to get the current set up.

What does this mean..

Bottom line.

The plane is flying with the wing at -1 degree to the stab and requires a slight amount (~1/8") of up elevator to fly level.

This was the first Herk on this website that I remember and I posted construction pics. The plane does fly ok but If I were to build another I would:

1) Use the wing saddle as a reference.

2) Build the wing and install it on the saddle

3) Set the stab in reference to the wing to attain about a +1 degree on the wing in reference to the stab.

Hope this helps and sorry for the delay.

I do now have video of inflight I took this week 7/21/04 if I can get help as previous to post. the videos are about 20 sec. each and show complete takeoff,, in flight, and landing. Sorry but there is no sound on this video,, guess the funds are a little on the light side after building the herk in buying the camera.

Right on JIm, I built my Herk with +1 on the main wing 0 on the tail plane and 0 on the engines, 2 degrees of wing tip washout, it just hangs on the wing on landing without using any flaps, I am still waitng for the right condiions to do a flap landing Mike

Wow. Thanks both of you guys for the incidence checks. See I'm guesing the plans could be off, because they had 0 degrees all around on the wing, stab and the engines.

Multimike, how is your elevator set for flying? Up, down or centered with the +1 deg. on the main wing?

Thanks alot.

Gunny

Thanks guys for the incidence check. Beplo, I'm building the american eagle/quality fiberglass kit like jimcorks and multimikes.

Thanks

I do not think that can be correct, that would give you 7 degrees positive on the wing,in my humble opinion it would never fly, my C130 is scratch built from my own plans, good luck MIke

Hey Gunny, I like the way my bird flys but I think that it could stand one small change,on low slow passes it likes to be a little nose high, I have revixed my thinking slighly and I think if one was to put maybe 1/2 degree positive on the tail plane and 2 degrees posiiive on the main it would bring the tail up a little, MIke

Mike:

Positive on the wing is fine, changing the horizontal stab will just change the amount of elevator deflection needed for level flight.

When you have the plane trimmed for level flight check the up/down position of the elevator relative to the stab. If it's flat, leave the stab alone. If it's a bit up you can raise the front edge of the stab, and so forth.

Bill.

got a couple more flights on my gun ship Herk this evening. Weather was perfect. After the flight, I was taxiing back to the pit area, and this car drove in to the flying field, and a man and his wife got out and watched while my son and I were doing a Tach check on the engines at various throttle settings. When I shut the engines down, he all smiles and said, "Man, I'm glad I got to see that fly. We were coming down the interstate and looke up and saw this C-130, and I had to find out where it was!" Our runway is about 1000' West of Interstate 81 and he saw it from his car. Always makes you feel good when someone notices your particular plane!! (but then, mine was the only one flying, too!)
I never realized how much different 4 engines would sound as opposed to 2. What a buzz!
(how big would a "Spruce Goose" have to be to accomodate 8 .25's?????????????)

Randy:

Can't say about eight 0.25 engines, this one had about one foot of span for each of its 0.010 engines. You can judge size by the Robart stand it's sitting on.

Thanks for those pics, Bill. That would be an awesome model, but I don't have any water around here to fly it off of. Maybe I'd have to wait for snow like I've seen some do with seaplanes. I bought a plastic kit of the Goose at the AF Museum a couple weeks ago. Maybe I'll be content to build that for now!!
Randy
