For the woods I buy from [link]http://www.balsausa.com/wood/?shopperid=[/link]

I be back later today to upload pictures of the pre-assembly of my foam core center section. And I think I'll have to get going on tracing my cardboard templates for the fues. and see if who the other two people needed them.

Has anyone else completed and flown the herk in the last several months? Mine is in storage until we finish rebuilding. Currently we have no flying fields in 40 miles due to FEMA using them for waste disposal.

It would be nice to see "in the air" pics. Jim

Well.... I have almost completely stopped working on the herk. For some reason, I have almost totally lost interest in building anything. I am thinking about selling all of my planes but kepping an ultrastick to fly. The herk would sit in the storage until I decide to work on it or sell it to somebody for them to finish. I work on it from time to time, but just cannot motivate myself. Any takers?

I sure it's the same one. Bill, What about the templates. I know it's been a while but I'm back into the herk building season. (always tight on free time [&o] ).

Question on the full size? Did the inner flaps go down further than the outboard flaps? I have decided to go with Hitec programable digital servos for the flaps only. With the hitec programer I'll be able to match precisely each movement of the four flaps and control the speed of travel. I use the 3 position switch on my Futaba Super 8 radio. UP=0 flaps or none. CENTER=half flaps or actually takeoff position and DOWN=full flaps or landing position. This is me. I've been doing this for years.

I've made an additional cut-out in the center of the wing in the top. This will be an access hatch that will house my MSA-10 or simply (matchbox or servo synchronizer) where I can fine tune anyone of the four engines even while the engines are running, especially at idle. This area will also house a small batt. for the throt. servos. WHy? Because I dont run micro servos on voltage regulators or 6 volts. (because of speed and jitters). Thus there will be a switch with charge jack here also.

I love this engineering stuff.

Please stay tunned for pictures of the completed internals of the foam core center section only, It has not been sheeted yet.

Well, here's the internals of the center section of the foam wing. (It may make no sence now, but only time will tell).

Hey all,

I have been reviewing this post, and MAN, is it long. haha Let me introduce my self....

I have been considering building the c-130 for a year or so, Ive had Skip Mast plans sitting around and all the foam-sheeting-ect., and NOW, im about ready to start. TF Corsair and umm, Room in the Shop delaying me.

One good thing about building, I am a Sheet Metal Mechanic ON the C130 here at Hill Air Force Base (Civilian). If you have any technical or scale questions, I can definately help all of you out. I can take measurements... but no actual pictures without proper authority, (So you will have to request what you need and I will take pictures of what I can) due to security reasons. We do have a retired Herc here at the Museum, if you get desperate...

Currently in the hangar (Holds 8 C130) we have a E, H and Navy Model Birds. Anyway, if you need anything, let me know.

Gunny,

Question on the full size? Did the inner flaps go down further than the outboard flaps?
Yes they do, I can have 1:1 scale measurement for you. there is also a piece of skin that is attached on the outboard flap at the joint, keeping the "gap" from letting air through. What plans are you working from? So many posts, I may have missed that, although it does look like Skips.

thanks for letting me join in,

Jon McB

Nuttypilot, Thanks for the info on the flaps. I'm and most of us are building Bob Sealy's Precision Fiberglass kit, which I believe is from Skip Mast's plans.

Also, is their a light on top of the vertical tail fin? And if so what color? And is it a rotating beacon, strobe or constantly on?

Thanks,

Gunny

Gunny, Ok here we go...

Vertical Stab Lights on NAVY ONLY: The light on top of the Vertical Stab Light is white/red, measureing 6" high (total). Both colors because there are 2 seperate lights are stacked on top of each other, 3" high each, 4" in diameter. These "strobe" lights have a .5/2.2 sec, on/off respectively. Im not sure why the pilot needs both colors.

The only funky thing, after talking too the electrician about this, is that ONLY Navy/Marine Birds have these lights (lucky we have one in the hangar to get the meaurements). Air Force USE to have them on the tail, reflecting beacon type, but they have been replaced with one on the Fusalage, which measures 14-18 feet from the leading edge of the wing, depending on the model of c130. This light is also a strobe with the same function as the tail, just in a different location. There is now a coverplate over the hole where the light went on the stab. This change was made about 14 years ago, as per a TCTO (Time Compliance Technical Order).

Flaps: When the flaps are fully extended, there is a 6" Skin that overlaps to cause no gapping between the joint of the two. Both the inboard and outboard flap have this. The inboard lines up on the bottom, the outboard on top. I dont find this scale application difficult to duplicate, but it may be hard to modify if you are to far in the build. I will try to bet a picture soon, or submit a drawing of this. The I/B flap extends 8" farther than the O/B, not much of a difference considering the scale you are using. One more thing to consider on the flaps.... They DO have an airfoil, they are not just blocks. Completley flat on the bottom. I didn have one readily available to measure, but I will when I get pictures/drawings.

Thanks...
Jon McB

Sorry to hear that. The herk is a big project,, don't let it bog you down. RCing is fun,, if we ever get a field and I move from the trailer back into the house I will fly again. I have to drive 50 miles just to find a field. FEMA still has ours. Don't give up,, put the herk aside and get a "fun to fly bird" then go back to just flying for fun. I dropped out of r/cing for 10 years while kids were growing up,, but back into it is fun. You always have to have a flying challange,,, not just a building one. Spend more time at the field than building,, Best of luck on your choices. Besides,, try to help keep the hurricanes out of the gulf this year,, they really cut into the building time.. I have to build a home to live in vs.. an r/c plane. Jim

Hello, guys, first post for me as a brand new member to RC Universe so will have to see how this works out. I just ordered a set of Palmer plans for the c-130, 11foot wingspan, and am starting this construction you have all been talking about for the last 20 some pages of posts. Yes I have read each and every one of them! I am a believer in using everyone else's experience to make mine go together a little easier.
Sure looks like a lot of work to make a c-130. I hope to be able to call on you guys if I run into any snags that I just can’t seem to get out. Hope to talk to all soon with some pic’s of my bird. I just made room for my new work table. Wish me luck. Ps. Thanks for all the help you guy’s put out there you all have really made me jump off the fence and just get going. Chris.

Hey Guys, it has been a while since I posted anything on my C-130. It is still flying, the second year of air shows. My buddy Kenny and I built them for our club air show team. Well interest in the team has dropped due to the traveling and expense. In fact I am thinking of selling my herky bird. I plan to leave the engines (4 LA 40's) and the servos (4 HD & 9 standard). I not sure what it would be worth on the market, I seldom visit the sell ads on the web. I do have plenty of pictures of it on our club web site(okbarnstormers.com) mine is the camo paint job, Kenny did his in the coast guard design. There are more flying shots of Kennys plane than mine because I'm always the guy with the camera. I also do the web site. The airplane is a good flyer, but I am ready for another project.
Please check out the pictures and give me your best dollar figure.

Thanks Rich

Jon, the red is used to indicate that the plane is operating, i.e. you turn it on before starting the engine and turn it off after you've shut down. The white is a "normal" strobe light.

Well, the sub assy. of the outer center sections are done (w/o sheeting on it). I'll take pics. later. The easiest and the fastest will be the wing tips. Hercman and others, how are you guys comming along? Any pics too?

How are you guys doing on the HERK? Any progress? I'll have more progress pictures soon again. Winter is not over just yet, so keep on going. Don't get discouradged. It does take a little bit of time. That's why I prefer to build kits in the winter.
