O.k. back to more progress. Here is the outer wing tip section.
Pic 1. & 2. shows the cut out for the hinge blocks and the long thin slot is the wing tube termination rib cut out. Also shown is the wing tube hole and the 1/2" dia. holes for the ail. servo plug "rear" and the nav light plug "front" of the wing tube hole.
Pic. 3 shows the ail servo bay cut out.

Back to the main center section.
Pic. 1. Balsa joiner cap rib 1/16" balsa. The rear 1/2" dia. hole is for the servo wires. The 1/4" dia. hole is for lighting system wiring (tip nav light and landing lights). The vertical slotted voids are for ply joiner plates.
Pic. 2. Center section top hatch for throt. batt. and it's servo sync. (mach box or equiv.) The white filler is a mess up. I forgot to temporary put in the wing tube while I was vacume bagging the wing.
Pic. 3. Flap bays and fuel tank bays. The 3 holes are for the wires that goes into the fues.
Pic. 4. Also if vacuume bagging, you must add a 1/8" thick balsa sub L.E. to prevent crushing. Once sheeted, just add a 1/4" thk. L.E. stock and sand to shape.
Pic. 5 & 6 Once the L.E. is sanded to shape, then cut out for fuel tank bay.
Later,
Gunny
P.S. There is more on the pevious page

Hi JimCork1,
[>:]
A real newbie here. Terry (tg) from the UK (Wales).
I’m awaiting arrival of plans from Dan Palmer for his 87†Hercules c-130.
I don’t like aircraft losses (done model and full-size flying), I remember cleaning a model down after flying. Anyway its 30 yrs on now and boy, have things changed! Turbines, radials aplenty, computer radios, and “Eeeeâ€â€¦Flight!
I’ve read a lot of c-130 comment here, and digested it deeply. Yes, I’m going electric (to save a lot of cleaning and potential asymmetric thrust situations, at take-off in particularly. There are AXI 4130-16/8 motors used here and two would probably fly the bird. But I’m going to fit 4, 4 x erc’s, 4 x sets of bats. I’ve think I got a good chance then of taking it back home (intact).
Would appreciate any comments folks !
Best regards

Welcome to the group Terry. I didn't build the Palmer,, but I did build the Q Fiberglas Herk and after 2 years it is still in great flying condition. I haven't flown r/c since the major hurricane damaged our home and closed our flying field. Hopefully within the next 2 months I can get back into the air. I did a complete digital photo sequence in building my bird and many others have seriously improved in the "first?" Herk. If I can help feel free to post or email me. Jim

Just a little something to get us through the winter dulldrums. High obstacle short field approach. Very cool.

I thought that was a great approach. I flew 1000 hrs in Vietnam in the Herk,, looks like what we did on a daily basis.
My Herk is saved from Katrina, hopefully in the next several months I can get it back into the air. We lost our field due to Katrina/Fema and the nearest r/c field is 50 miles 1 way. So,,, the r/c stuff is still in storage. I hope to be back soon. sounds like Saito 2.2 with some big bird.. Jim

I orderd a C130 from Quality Fiberglass in early Feburary. He told me it would be about 2 weeks before it shipped. I have not received the kit and they are not returning my calls or answering my emails. Does anyone know of a problem? I am not in a hurry but though I would have the kit by now.

We were all told that. Prepare for about a 4-6 month wait. He never returns calls, you have to catch him when he actually answers the phone. He will give you excuse after excuse of why he hasn't shipped yet. After five months I called everyday to see when it would ship. When it finally did I was given a tracking number for a package that weighed 5lbs. When it arrived it was the engine nacelles and foam cores only. He pulled that crap on purpose. I received the rest of the airplane about a month later.Good luck!

Ok I am back charging batteries. I pulled the herk out of the attic (it survived the storm) and now going through the charge cycle routine. Can't fly anything until I can confirm they are flyable. No water in them but not used since 8/05. Hopefully they will be ready and the heat in the attic didn't warp them too bad. Still no flying field within 40+ miles so I have a long drive. Probably start back flying something simple like the Nobler, Cub, or Ultimate to get the wrinkles out of the brain.
Haven't heard much on Herk building. It does take a long time and you really have to be focused and stay the course to complete one. Best of luck to all. Billy heard you quit flying. I know you will be back. Best of luck to all. Jim

jimcork1, glad to hear you are doing ok and getting things back to normal!!! I love your Herk!! and all the others that are posted here!!
I too have to drive about 50+ miles to get to a good flying field..there is a local one but it is a grass runway only and it is a little rough for me...not picky..just it seems I spend a lot of time getting grass and debris out of my planes/engines when I fly there..just prefer a little better flying area...
Cheers,
Tomas

Just info I found Mobile 1 as after run oil really works. All of my engines were in the room with 4' of water for an extended period. So far all the saito's I have started up ran as if the last run day was yesterday. Given I did have to unstick the throttle barrel.

Using an x-y laser on a tri-pod to set the wing assy. perpendicular to the fuse. centerline. Note the wing pannels sections are tightly taped together with the internal main spar/wing tube.

Inboard flap details. The flaps are cut out in the bottom chuck or saddles on a band saw when possible. The control arm I cut out of carbon fiber and the hinges I found at the Toledo show from Yellow aircraft. I used their X-large (simulated) fowler flap hinges and cut the pattern as shown.

Aligning and glueing the flap. When dry I fine tune the shape of the flap with a long sanding bar as shown and move the flap up and down. Adding gussets and building the upper "wiper" which will be installed onto the T.E. of the wing covering the hinge joint.

Anyone making any progress. I made my first flight since Katrina last weekend. The plane was a stinger. Water got into the front of the bird by 1/2". Lost all the electronics but new stuff and a test flight all was well. A little shakey but the plane flew well. Our field is still closed for FEMA so I had to drive 80 miles to get in the air. Today I was in NO and invited to bring the herk to the CC Flying field but I need more "in the air" time to be ready to pull the herk out again. Jim

No I haven't talked with them since I ordered mine about 3 or so years ago. What I did find out when I bought mine was the the guy building them did it as fill in time on his primary job. He told me he was a farmer and when he was working crops he didn't have time to build the herk. He also told me there were times he spent 16 hrs + on a tractor working the fields. Apparently he owns his farm and that is primary source of income. He enjoys r/c but building the herk is only fill in work. Don't know if this helps. Jim
