I still have a 8mm M98 around here someplace myself. My favorite rifle is a homemade conversion I did to a old Japanese Arisaka when I put a 22 caliber barrel on it and chambered it for the 22-250 Ackley Improved cartridge. It has the muzzle velocity of the old 220 Swift but I can fire form cases for it using the 22-250 cartridges. I restocked the assembly and mounted a big high power scope on it. It does shoot nicely too, as I could fire 10 rounds at 100 yards and make one small ragged hole with it.  Anyway it was my ultimate varminter tool from back when varmint hunting was popular years ago.

If you load the 8X57 IS to "adult pressure" it will really hit like a sledge hammer.

European (CIP) spec' is 58K psi while US spec' (SAAMI) is abut 47K psi. I load to 60K since it is a modern commercial action. I get 2730 FPS Mv W/about 3300 ft #s of Me. I have some of the new Alliant RL 17 & according to "Quickload" predictions, it should be able to boost Mv by 50-75 fps @ similar pressure.

I had an 8mm-06 Ackley Improved. It would hit about 150 fps better than the 8X57. I still have the dies & cases. I want to redo that one. The barrel was turned too thin & it suffered accuracy wise. I have since learned to not try to turn a straight taper, but rather use a long constant 6'2" radius to clean up the "steps" W/O removing too much material.

Right now I have a 1943 vintage JP Sauer M98K action, a 1939 vintage Oberndorf M98K action, 2 intermediate length Yugolavian VZ500 M98 actions (1 of them is on the rifle pictured previosuly) & a SR small shank intermediate length 1934 Mexican Mauser M98 action.

I want to do the JP Suaer in 8X69S & the Oberndorf in 8mm-06 A.I. I have two M29 barrels that are 29" & have the heavier step out to 24". One is already cut & crowned to 26" for the 8X68S job. Both have excellent bores.

I don't remember Saito making steam locomotives but OS does though. http://www.oslivesteam.com/
Saito does make some fabulous steam engines. Plus they make boilers and burners to go with the steam engines too.

Saito 3DTR Triple.

Earlwb, the catalogues we get with our Saitos here in Oz have always shown a nice line in steam engines both stationary and "working".  In fact one of my cousins obtained one in Hong Kong back in the days when Kai Tak a/port was still the go and put it in a model of the Africia Queen.

Hobby-Lobby used to sell the Saito steam engines and boats to put them in. They were expensive and beautiful. That was a good 12 years ago or more.

Ok people totally un related to Saitos (except I might acquire some when the owner is not in full control of his senses, alls fair in the acquisition of old Saitos).  I am on the horns of a dilima the question is
Do I invite some local friends over to drink all my booze or do I just use up the opened bottles. That is get them total drunk out of their collective gourds or just a bit drunk.
This is one of the problems in shifting house nearlt 2000 kilometres.

Old Fart, these Yanks don't understand that it is just a move down the coast from Cairns to Brisbane.  The best part about it if there is any with this sort of thing is that my old mate and I will get "The Olde Firm" up and running and already we are getting sledging from the other people who compete in Scale racing and O/T.  That is the ver big plus.  And I will get to use (well maybe) those bikes he has acquired.  Down side, the days here are 25 to 28 degrees c with the o/ nite at around 18 to 20 degrees c.  In Brisbane subtract at least 5 from theabove figures.

But we'll survive,

Hey OLD FART,
Guess your rite that I could have looked at a map before responding, altho my reference to "other side" didn't really imply North\South, East\West, or the other side of the Great Barrier Reef. Just to my little mind (my state is only 150x300 mi appx) 1200 miles is pretty big, and I really didn't realize just how big Australia is . . . . . . Why it's almost as big as . . . . . !!!

Great to see the interest in my move.  Re Texas we are actually bigger in area than any individual state in the USA and we have more coast line than any yopu can offer (but only just).  My more means that my travelling to competitions is virtually halved but more important I re connect with a lot of very old modelling friemds and at age 64 that is becoming more important.  Just a final bit, for those who care where I am currently living on the coast at Cairns it is a cold 20 degrees and it was -2 up on the table land behind me.  We also are "totally self sufficient here" we produce every food known to man (in cluding Golden Arches) the only exception being sheep)  I know why does he move, I am still pondering tat while looking to the positives.  Family comes first even if you don't like them some times.
We would welcome the oportunity to meet up with you guys so please consider coming over some time.  If Horizon Hobbies think our competition at Gratton Field is good enough to sponsor and send eps to next year we must be doing something good.  The aim is to make it the Aussie version of Top Gun (if that is possible) and my move (impending) has resulted in my being co opted to assist.  Should be interesting especially with the way the program is developing.
Back onto Saitos.  I am looking at ceramic bearings, maye a piston and liner (seramic) as well for the 120 we will be racing next year.  Does any one know if such things are available(?).  i have fitted these bits to and Enya 53 with exceptional results across te board and I am looking.
As for Old Fart.  I am moving to the seat of political power in the state, and I don't just mean the legislature either.
One more Saito thing.  I have just found a reason to buy that new big radial gas engine Saito has just released.  I have an ESM Storch and I have been pondering the French built version that they used in Indo China, I saw one (or the remains) in Saigon in 99 and thought it was interesting.  It would be different.
